The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,

7 Postquam autem locútus est Dóminus verba hæc ad Iob, dixit ad Eliphaz Themanítem: Irátus est furor meus in te et in duos amícos tuos, quóniam non estis locúti coram me rectum, sicut servus meus Iob.
8 Súmite ergo vobis septem tauros et septem aríetes et ite ad servum meum Iob et offérte holocáustum pro vobis; Iob autem servus meus orábit pro vobis. Fáciem eius suscípiam, ut non vobis imputétur stultítia; neque enim locúti estis ad me recta, sicut servus meus Iob.

7 But after the Lord had finished speaking these words to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Themanite: My wrath has been kindled against you, and against your two friends, because you have not been speaking correctly in my eyes, as my servant Job has done.
8 Therefore, have seven bulls and seven rams brought to you, and go to my servant Job, and offer these as a holocaust for yourselves. But also, my servant Job will pray for you; I will accept his face, so that foolishness will not be imputed to you. For you have not been speaking correctly about me, as my servant Job has done.

℟ Quis mihi tríbuat, ut in inférno prótegas me et abscóndas me, donec pertránseat furor tuus, Dómine, nisi tu, qui solus es Deus?

℟ Who will grant me that you would protect me in the underworld and hide me, until your wrath passes, O Lord, if not you, who alone are God?

And that you would appoint me a time in which you would remember me?

11 Yet all his brethren came to him, and all his sisters, and everyone who had known him before, and they ate bread with him in his house. They also shook their heads over him and comforted him, because of all the bad things that God had inflicted on him. And each one of them gave him one female sheep, and one earring of gold.

℟ Would that my sins were weighed, by which I have deserved your wrath,

15 And, in the whole world, there were not found women so beautiful as the daughters of Job. And so their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers.
16 But Job lived long after these events, for a hundred and forty years, and he saw his children, and his children's children, all the way to the fourth generation, and he died an old man and full of days.

Januarius, bishop of Benevento, when Diocletian and Maximian were raging against the Christians, was brought to Nola to Timothy, governor of Campania, on account of his profession of the Christian faith. There, his constancy having been tried in various ways, he was cast into a burning furnace, from which he escaped so unharmed that the flame touched neither garment nor hair. Then the governor, inflamed with anger, ordered the body of the Martyr to be stretched until the joints of the sinews and limbs were undone. Meanwhile Festus his deacon and Desiderius his lector, seized and bound, were dragged along with the bishop before the governor's carriage to Pozzuoli, and thrust into the same prison where Sosius of Misenum and Proculus a deacon of Pozzuoli, and Eutychetes and Acutius, laymen, who had been condemned to the beasts, were being held.

Timothy, attributing this to magic incantations, when he had pronounced the sentence of death upon Christ's Martyrs, was suddenly struck blind; but soon, at the prayer of blessed Januarius, he received his sight again; by which miracle about five thousand men embraced the faith of Christ. Yet the ungrateful judge, made no more placated by this benefit, but driven into a rage by the conversion of so great a multitude, and fearing above all the decrees of the rulers, ordered the holy Bishop and his companions to be slain by the sword.

The neighboring cities, each according to its zeal for adopting one of the martyrs as its own patron before God, took care of the burial of their bodies. The Neapolitans, guided by a divine admonition, took up the body of Januarius; which, translated first to Benevento, then to the monastery of Monte Vergine, and finally laid to rest in the chief church of Naples, was renowned for many miracles. But this above all is to be remembered: that it extinguished masses of flame once bursting forth from Mount Vesuvius, which were bringing fear of devastation not only to neighboring but also to distant regions. This too is remarkable: that his blood, which is preserved congealed in a glass vial, is seen to this day, when placed before the head of the same Martyr, to liquefy and bubble in a wondrous manner, just as if freshly shed.

Matt 24:3-13

Discipuli Dóminum intérrogant quando hæc fíerent, quodve signum et adventus sui et consummatiónis sæculi nóscerent. Et, quia tria hæc in unum quæsíta sunt, distinctis et témporis et intelligéntiæ significatiónibus separántur. Respondétur ígitur primum de civitátis occasu, et confirmántur veritáte doctrinæ, ne quis fallax ignorántibus posset obrépere; venturi enim erant étiam eórum témpore, qui se Christum essent nuncupatúri. Ut ígitur fides pestífero mendácio détrahi posset, admonítio præcessit.

The disciples ask the Lord when these things would take place, and what sign they might know of his coming and of the consummation of the age. And, because these three things were asked together as one, they are separated by distinct significations both of time and of understanding. Answer is therefore given first concerning the fall of the city, and they are confirmed by the truth of the teaching, lest anyone deceitful might creep in upon the ignorant; for there were to come, even in their own time, those who would announce themselves as Christ. So that faith might not be undermined by pestilential falsehood, this warning was given in advance.

℟ Propter testaméntum Dómini, et leges patérnas, Sancti Dei perstitérunt in amóre fraternitátis:

℟ For the sake of the covenant of the Lord and the laws of their fathers, the holy ones of God persevered in brotherly love:

Quia unus fuit semper spíritus in eis, et una fides.

Because there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.

℣ Ecce quam bonum et quam iucúndum habitáre fratres in unum.

℣ Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together as one.

Confírmat ígitur eos ad tolerántiam passiónum, fugæ, verberatiónis, intéritus et publici in eos odii propter nomen eius. Atque his quidem vexatiónibus multi turbabúntur, et, tantis insurgéntibus malis scandalizabúntur, et usque in mutuum ódium excitabúntur. Et falsi prophetæ erunt (ut Nicolaus unus ex septem diacónibus fuit), multosque ementíta veritáte pervertent; et, abundante nequitia, caritas refrigéscet.

He therefore confirms them for the endurance of sufferings, of flight, of beatings, of destruction, and of public hatred on account of his name. And indeed many will be disturbed by these afflictions, and will be scandalized as so many evils rise up, and will be stirred even to mutual hatred. And false prophets will arise (as Nicholas, one of the seven deacons, was), and will pervert many with feigned truth; and, as wickedness abounds, charity will grow cold.

Sed usque in finem perseverántibus salus reserváta est; ac tum, per omnes orbis partes viris apostolicis dispersis, Evangélii véritas prædicábitur. Et, cum univérsis fúerit cognítio sacraménti cæléstis invecta, tum Ierúsalem occasus et finis incumbet; ut prædicatiónis fidem, et infidelium pœna et metus civitátis érutæ consequátur. Hæc ígitur in eam, ut fuerant prædicta, perfécta sunt; et, lapidatis, fugatis, peremptis Apóstolis, fame, bello, captivitáte consumpta est. Ac tum fuit digna non esse, cum, eiectis prædicatóribus Christi, indignam Dei prædicatióne se præbuit.

But salvation is reserved for those who persevere to the end; and then, when the apostolic men are dispersed through all parts of the world, the truth of the Gospel will be preached. And when the knowledge of the heavenly mystery has been brought to all, then ruin and end will overtake Jerusalem; so that the punishment of the unbelievers and the fear of the overthrown city may follow upon the faithfulness of the preaching. These things, therefore, were accomplished upon it as they had been foretold; and, the Apostles being stoned, put to flight, and slain, it was consumed by famine, war, and captivity. And then it was worthy to be no more, since, having expelled the preachers of Christ, it showed itself unworthy of God's preaching.
