Hymnus
Iam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Eiúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.
May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.
May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.
That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.
All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.
Psalmi
Ant. Misericórdia tua, * Dómine, ante óculos meos: et complácui in veritáte tua.
Ant. Your mercy, * O Lord, is before my eyes: and I have been pleasing in your truth.
Psalmus 25
Psalm 25
25:1 Iúdica me, Dómine, quóniam ego in innocéntia mea ingréssus sum: * et in Dómino sperans non infirmábor.
25:2 Proba me, Dómine, et tenta me: * ure renes meos et cor meum.
25:12 Pes meus stetit in dirécto: * in ecclésiis benedícam te, Dómine.
25:1 Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in my innocence, * and trusting in the Lord I shall not falter.
25:2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me: * purify my reins and my heart.
25:3 For your mercy is before my eyes, * and I have been well pleased in your truth.
25:4 I have not sat with the council of vanity, * and I will not enter with those who do iniquity.
25:5 I have hated the assembly of the malignant, * and with the wicked I will not sit.
25:6 I will wash my hands among the innocent, * and I will compass your altar, O Lord:
25:7 That I may hear the voice of praise, * and tell of all your wondrous works.
25:8 O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house, * and the place where your glory dwells.
25:9 Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked, * nor my life with men of blood:
25:10 In whose hands are iniquities: * their right hand is filled with bribes.
25:11 But as for me, I have walked in my innocence: * redeem me, and have mercy on me.
25:12 My foot has stood in the right way: * in the assemblies I will bless you, O Lord.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 51
Psalm 51
51:3 Quid gloriáris in malítia, * qui potens es in iniquitáte?
51:3 Why do you glory in malice, * you who are mighty in iniquity?
51:4 All day long your tongue devised injustice: * like a sharp razor you have wrought deceit.
51:5 You have loved malice above kindness: * and iniquity more than speaking equity.
51:6 You have loved all words of ruin, * O deceitful tongue.
51:7 Therefore God will destroy you utterly, * he will pluck you out and remove you from your dwelling, and your root from the land of the living.
51:8 The just shall see, and shall fear, and shall laugh at him, and shall say: * Behold the man who did not take God for his helper:
51:9 But trusted in the abundance of his riches: * and grew strong in his vanity.
51:10 But I, as a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, * have hoped in the mercy of God forever: yea, for ever and ever.
51:11 I will praise you forever, because you have done it: * and I will wait on your name, for it is good in the sight of your holy ones.
Amen.
Psalmus 52
Psalm 52
52:1 The fool has said in his heart: * There is no God.
52:2 They are corrupt, and have become abominable in their iniquities: * there is none who does good.
52:3 God has looked down from heaven upon the children of men: * to see if there be any who understand, or who seek God.
52:4 All have turned aside, they are become unprofitable together: * there is none who does good, not even one.
52:5 Shall not all who work iniquity know, * who devour my people as they eat bread?
52:6 They have not called upon God: * there they trembled with fear, where there was no fear.
52:6 For God has scattered the bones of those who please men: * they have been confounded, because God has despised them.
52:7 Who will give out of Zion the salvation of Israel? * When God shall turn away the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
Amen.
Ant. Misericórdia tua, Dómine, ante óculos meos: et complácui in veritáte tua.
Ant. Your mercy, O Lord, is before my eyes: and I have been pleasing in your truth.

At Rome, the birth of Saint Robert Bellarmine, Confessor, of the Society of Jesus, and Cardinal and former Bishop of Capua, most renowned for holiness, learning, and very many labors undertaken for the defense of the Catholic faith and the Apostolic See; whom Pope Pius the Eleventh, Supreme Pontiff, adorned with the honors of the Saints and declared a Doctor of the universal Church, and appointed his feast to be kept on the thirteenth of May.
At Rome, on the Tiburtine Way, the birth of Saint Justin, Priest and Martyr; who, in the persecution of Valerian and Gallienus, was renowned for the glory of his confession. At Saragossa, in Spain, Saint Peter of Arbues, the first Inquisitor of the faith in the kingdom of Aragon; whom, savagely murdered by relapsed Jews on account of that same Catholic faith which he was vigorously guarding in the exercise of his office, Pope Pius the Ninth added to the catalogue of holy Martyrs.

On the same day, Saint Agathoclia, who, being the slave of a certain unbelieving woman, was vexed for a long time by her mistress with blows and other afflictions to make her deny Christ; finally, brought before the judge and more savagely torn, and nevertheless persisting in the confession of the faith, was for this reason cast into the fire after the cutting out of her tongue.
At Milan, the deposition of Saint Satyrus, Confessor, whose distinguished merits Saint Ambrose, his brother, recalls.
