1 Noli fácere mala, et non te apprehéndent:
2 discéde ab iníquo, et defícient mala abs te.
3 Fili, non sémines mala in sulcis iniustítiæ et non metes ea in séptuplum.
4 Noli quǽrere a dómino ducátum, neque a rege cáthedram honóris.
5 Non te iustífices ante Deum, quóniam ágnitor cordis ipse est: et penes regem noli velle vidéri sápiens.

1 Do not choose to do evil, and evil will not take hold of you.
2 Withdraw from the iniquitous, and evil will withdraw from you.
3 Son, do not sow evil in the furrows of injustice, and you will not reap them sevenfold.
4 Do not seek a role of leadership from the Lord, and do not seek a seat of honor from the king.
5 You should not justify yourself before God, for he is the Knower of hearts. And by no means should you wish to seem wise before the king.

11 You should not say: 'God will look with favor on the multitude of my gifts, and when I make an offering to the most high God, he will accept my gift.'

13 Do not love a lie against your brother, nor should you act the same toward your friend.
14 Do not be willing to devise a lie of any kind. For the practice of lying is not good.
15 Do not choose to be verbose among a multitude of elders, and you should not repeat the words of your prayers.

Raymond, surnamed Nonnatus, because beyond the common law of nature he was brought into the light by a cut in the side of his dead mother, was born at Portell in Catalonia of pious and noble parents, and from his very infancy gave signs of future holiness. For despising childish amusements and the allurements of the world, he so devoted himself to piety that all marveled at the mature virtue in the boy. As he grew in age he applied himself to literary studies; but soon, living in the country at his father's command, he frequently visited the chapel of Saint Nicholas situated in the region of Portell, in order to venerate the sacred image of the Mother of God that is there honored to this day with the highest veneration of the faithful. There, poured out in prayer, he earnestly besought the Mother of God herself to be pleased to adopt him as her son and to teach him the way of salvation and the knowledge of holy things.

Nor was the most gracious Virgin wanting to his prayers. On account of these and other brave deeds, the fame of his holiness spread far and wide. Ad hanc ipsam intentiónem referéndum est quod consequénter expónit, dicens: Aut enim unum ódio habébit, et álterum díliget; aut álterum patiétur, et álterum contémnet. Quæ verba diligénter consideránda sunt: nam, qui sint duo dómini, deínceps osténdit, cum dicit: Non potéstis Deo servíre, et mammónæ. Mammóna apud Hebrǽos divítiæ appellári dicúntur. Cóngruit et Púnicum nomen; nam lucrum Púnice mammon dícitur.

No one can serve two masters. To this very point refers what he then explains, saying: For he will either hate the one and love the other, or bear with the one and despise the other. These words are to be carefully considered; for who the two masters are he shows immediately after, when he says: You cannot serve God and mammon. Among the Hebrews, mammon is said to be the word for riches. The Punic word agrees as well; for profit in Punic is called mammon.

For whoever serves mammon will endure a harsh and ruinous master; for, entangled in his own desire, he is subject to the devil, and does not love him. For who is it that loves the devil? Yet he endures him.

Therefore, he says, I say to you, do not be anxious about your soul, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on: lest perhaps, even though superfluous things are no longer sought, the heart should still be divided because of necessary things, and our attention turned aside to the acquiring of them, when we seem to do some act of mercy — that is, when, in wishing to appear to advise someone, we attend there to our own advantage rather than to his benefit; and therefore we may not seem to ourselves to sin, because what we wish to obtain are not superfluous but necessary things.
