1 Verti me ad ália, et vidi calúmnias, quæ sub sole gerúntur, et lácrimas innocéntium, et néminem consolatórem, nec posse resístere eórum violéntiæ cunctórum auxílio destitútos.
2 Et laudávi magis mórtuos quam vivéntes;
3 et feliciórem utróque iudicávi qui necdum natus est nec vidit mala quæ sub sole fiunt.
4 Rursum contemplátus sum omnes labóres hóminum, et indústrias animadvérti patére invídiæ próximi; et in hoc ergo vánitas et cura supérflua est.

1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the false accusations which are carried out under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and that there was no one to console them; and that they were not able to withstand their violence, being destitute of all help.
2 And so, I praised the dead more than the living.
3 And happier than both of these, I judged him to be, who has not yet been born, and who has not yet seen the evils which are done under the sun.
4 Again, I was contemplating all the labors of men. And I took notice that their endeavors are open to the envy of their neighbor. And so, in this, too, there is emptiness and superfluous anxiety.

8 He is one, and he does not have a second: no son, no brother. And yet he does not cease to labor, nor are his eyes satisfied with wealth, nor does he reflect, saying: "For whom do I labor and cheat my soul of good things?" In this, too, is emptiness and a most burdensome affliction.

℟ Magna enim sunt iudícia tua, Dómine, et inenarrabília verba tua:

℟ For your judgments are great, O Lord, and your words are beyond telling:

11 And if two are sleeping, they warm one another. How can one person alone be warmed?
12 And if a man can prevail against one, two may withstand him, and a threefold cord is broken with difficulty.
13 Better is a boy, poor and wise, than a king, old and foolish, who does not know to look ahead for the sake of posterity.

Clare, a noble virgin, born at Assisi in Umbria, following in the steps of her fellow-townsman Saint Francis, distributed and converted all her goods into almsdeeds and support for the poor. Fleeing the tumult of the world, she withdrew to a country church, where, having received the tonsure from the same Blessed Francis, she firmly resisted her relatives who tried to bring her back. And at length she was led by him to the church of Saint Damian, where the Lord gathered many companions for her; and thus she herself founded the community of the sacred sisters, whose governance she accepted, having overcome the importunity of Saint Francis by her perseverance. She governed her monastery diligently and prudently for forty-two years with wonderful care, in the fear of the Lord and in full observance of the rule; for her life was an instruction and doctrine to the others, from whom the rest learned the rule of living.

That, with the flesh being pressed down, the spirit might grow strong, she used the bare ground and sometimes bundles of sticks for a bed, and a hard piece of wood for a pillow under her head. The power of her holiness shone forth in many and various miracles. To one of the sisters of her monastery she restored clear speech; to another she opened a deaf ear; one suffering from fever, one swollen with dropsy, one afflicted with wounds she healed by the sign of the Cross.

What is it that God, the creator of all things, when he wished to heal the deaf and mute man, put his fingers into his ears and, spitting, touched his tongue? What is signified by the fingers of the Redeemer, if not the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Hence, when in another place he had cast out a demon, he said: If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then certainly the kingdom of God has overtaken you. Concerning this, he is described in another Evangelist to have said: If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God has overtaken you. From both passages taken together it is gathered that the Spirit is called the finger. To put fingers into the ears, therefore, is to open the mind of the deaf to obedience through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
