The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,

1 Hóminis est ánimam præparáre, et Dómini gubernáre linguam.

3 Revéla Dómino ópera tua, et dirigéntur cogitatiónes tuæ.
4 Univérsa propter semetípsum operátus est Dóminus, ímpium quoque ad diem malum.
5 Abominátio Dómini est omnis árrogans, étiam si manus ad manum fúerit, non est ínnocens.

1 It is for man to prepare the soul, and for the Lord to govern the tongue.
2 All the ways of a man are open to his eyes; the Lord is the one who weighs spirits.
3 Open your works to the Lord, and your intentions will be set in order.
4 The Lord has wrought all things because of himself. Likewise the impious is for the evil day.
5 All the arrogant are an abomination to the Lord. Even if hand will be joined to hand, he is not innocent.

7 When the ways of man will please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.
8 Better is a little with justice, than many fruits with iniquity.
9 The heart of man disposes his way. But it is for the Lord to direct his steps.

℟ For your judgments are great, O Lord, and your words are beyond telling:

The king her father having been baptized together with four hundred and thirty others, he returned to Rome; where, seized by command of the emperor Maximian, he was bound in chains and dragged before his chariot; and after four days, brought out of prison, drenched with liquid pitch and stretched on the rack, he was finally struck with the axe along with Largus and Smaragdus and twenty others on the Via Salaria, near the gardens of Sallust. Their bodies, buried on the seventeenth day before the Kalends of April in the same road by the priest John, afterward on the sixth of the Ides of August by the Pontiff Marcellus and the noble woman Lucina were wrapped in linen cloths and embalmed with precious ointments, and were transferred to the estate of Lucina herself on the Via Ostia, at the seventh milestone from the city.

There is no one who does not know that the glories of the Martyrs are frequented by the people of God by divine counsel for this purpose: that due honor may be paid to them, and that examples of virtue may be shown to us, with Christ's favor; so that, as we perceive these things to be celebrated in this manner, we may know how great a glory awaits in heaven those whose birthdays are celebrated in such a way on earth; and that we too may be provoked by such examples, with equal virtue, similar devotion and faith; so that, with Christ granting it, we may fight and conquer the enemy, and, with victory won, may triumph with those same Saints in the heavenly kingdoms.

For who, wishing to be worthily united with them, unless he first holds firm to their constancy, follows their faith, imitates the virtue of their Passion, either finds or seeks their glory by the equal lines of his life? One who, even if he cannot be equal to them in martyrdom, may nonetheless show himself worthy by good deeds of the dignity of so great a gift. For the most clement God is present, who either offers martyrdom to those who desire it, or, without martyrdom, bestows divine rewards with the Saints.

What follows: Whoever has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but whoever has not believed will be condemned. Perhaps each one may say within himself: I have already believed; I shall be saved. He speaks truly, if he holds the faith by works. For true faith is that which does not contradict in conduct what it affirms in words. Hence it is that Paul says of certain false believers: They confess that they know God, but deny him by their deeds.
