1 Múlier autem quædam de uxóribus prophetárum clamábat ad Eliséum, dicens: Servus tuus vir meus mórtuus est, et tu nosti quia servus tuus fuit timens Dóminum; et ecce créditor venit ut tollat duos fílios meos ad serviéndum sibi.
2 Cui dixit Eliséus: Quid vis ut fáciam tibi? Dic mihi, quid habes in domo tua? At illa respóndit: Non hábeo ancílla tua quidquam in domo mea, nisi parum ólei, quo ungar.
3 Cui ait: Vade, pete mútuo ab ómnibus vicínis tuis vasa vácua non pauca;
4 et ingrédere et claude óstium tuum, cum intrínsecus fúeris tu et fílii tui, et mitte inde in ómnia vasa hæc; et, cum plena fúerint, tolles.
1 Now a certain woman, from the wives of the prophets, cried out to Elisha, saying: 'My husband, your servant, is dead. And you know that your servant was one who fears the Lord. And behold, a creditor has arrived, so that he may take away my two sons to serve him.'
2 And Elisha said to her: 'What do you want me to do for you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?' And she responded, 'I, your handmaid, do not have anything in my house, except a little oil, with which I may be anointed.'
3 And he said to her: 'Go, ask to borrow from all your neighbors empty vessels, more than a few.
4 And enter and close your door. And when you are inside with your sons, pour from the oil into all those vessels. And when they are full, take them away.'

5 And so, the woman went and closed the door upon herself and her sons. They were bringing her the vessels, and she was pouring into them.
6 And when the vessels had been filled, she said to her son, 'Bring me another a vessel.' And he responded, 'I have none.' And there was oil remaining.
7 Then she went and told the man of God. And he said: 'Go, sell the oil, and repay your creditor. Then you and your sons may live on what remains.'
8 Now it happened that, on a certain day, Elisha passed by Shunem. And there was a great woman there, who took him to eat bread.
9 And she said to her husband: 'I have noticed that he is a holy man of God, who passes by us frequently.'
10 Therefore, let us prepare a small upper room for him, and place a bed in it for him, and a table, and a chair, and a lampstand, so that when he comes to us, he may stay there.

℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:

13 he said to his servant: 'Say to her: Behold, you have ministered to us attentively in all things. What do you want, that I might do for you? Do you have any business, or do you want me to speak to the king, or to the leader of the military?' And she responded, 'I live in the midst of my own people.'
14 And he said, 'Then what does she want, that I might do for her?' And Gehazi said: 'You need not ask. For she has no son, and her husband is elderly.'
15 And so, he instructed him to call her. And when she had been called, and was standing before the door,
16 he said to her, 'At this time, and at this same hour, with life as a companion, you will have a son in your womb.' But she responded, 'Do not, I ask you, my lord, a man of God, do not be willing to lie to your handmaid.'
17 And the woman conceived. And she bore a son, in the time and at the same hour as Elisha had said.

The words of our Lord Jesus Christ, which have just been read from the Gospel, admonish us that there is one thing toward which we must tend, even as we labor amid the multitude of this age. We tend, however, still as pilgrims, not yet as those who abide; still on the way, not yet in our homeland; still in longing, not yet in enjoyment. Yet let us tend, and without sluggishness and without ceasing let us tend, that we may at some point be able to arrive. Martha and Mary were two sisters, both kindred not only in flesh but also in devotion; both clung to the Lord; both served the Lord present in the flesh with one accord.

Martha received him as pilgrims are wont to be received; yet a handmaid received the Lord, the sick received the Savior, a creature received the Creator. She received him, however, to be fed in spirit, while he was to be fed in the flesh. For the Lord willed to take the form of a servant, and, having taken the form of a servant, to be fed in that form by his servants — by condescension, not by condition. For this very condescension was a gift: to allow himself to be fed. He had flesh in which he might indeed hunger and thirst; but do you not know that when he was hungry in the desert, Angels ministered to him? Therefore, what he willed to receive as food, he himself gave to the one who fed him. And what wonder, if he also gave to the widow on account of holy Elijah, whom before that a raven fed? Surely he had not grown deficient in feeding when he was sending Elijah to the widow? By no means; but he was disposing to bless a devout widow through the service rendered to his servant.

Yet let none of you perhaps say: O blessed are they who merited to receive Christ into their own home! Do not grieve, do not murmur because you were born in times when you no longer see the Lord in the flesh. He has not taken from you that dignity. When you did it, he says, to one of the least of mine, you did it to me. These few things, suited to the occasion, we have said about feeding the Lord in the flesh, yet feeding in the spirit.
