1 Appropinquavérunt autem dies David ut morerétur, præcepítque Salomóni fílio suo, dicens:
2 Ego ingrédior viam univérsæ terræ: confortáre, et esto vir,
3 et obsérva custódias Dómini Dei tui, ut ámbules in viis eius: ut custódias cæremónias eius, et præcépta eius, et iudícia, et testimónia, sicut scriptum est in lege Móysi; ut intéllegas univérsa quæ facis, et quocúmque te vérteris;
4 ut confírmet Dóminus sermónes suos, quos locútus est de me dicens: Si custodíerint fílii tui vias suas, et ambuláverint coram me in veritáte in omni corde suo et in omni ánima sua, non auferétur tibi vir de sólio Israël.

1 Now the days of David had drawn near, so that he would die, and he instructed his son Solomon, saying:
2 I am entering the way of all the earth. Be strengthened and be a good man.
3 And observe the care of the Lord your God, so that you walk in his ways, so that you care for his ceremonies, and his precepts, and judgments, and testimonies, just as it is written in the law of Moses. So may you understand everything that you do, in any direction that you may turn yourself.
4 So may the Lord confirm his words, which he has spoken about me, saying: 'If your sons will guard their ways, and if they will walk before me in truth, with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not be taken away from you a man on the throne of Israel.'

5 "Also, you know what Joab, the son of Zeruiah, has done to me, what he did to the two leaders of the army of Israel, to Abner, the son of Ner, and to Amasa, the son of Jether. He killed them, and so he shed the blood of war in peace time, and he set the bloodshed of battle on his belt, which was around his waist, and in his shoes, which were on his feet.
6 Therefore, act according to your wisdom. And you shall not allow his gray head to be led away to death in peace."

℟ It came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven,

9 Tu noli pati eum esse innóxium.

7 "Then, too, repay grace to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite. And you shall allow them to eat at your table. For they met me when I fled from the face of Absalom, your brother.
8 Also, you have with you Shimei, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin, from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse, when I went away to the camp. And he descended to meet me when I crossed over the Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, 'I will not put you to death by the sword,'
9 yet do not choose to treat him as if he were innocent. Since you are a wise man, you will know what to do with him. And you shall lead away his grey hair to death with blood."

Bonaventure, born in Bagnoregio in Etruria, as a child escaped a deadly illness by the prayers of Blessed Francis, to whose religious order he had been vowed by his mother's vow if he should recover. And so as a young man he wished to embrace the order of the Friars Minor, in which he made such progress in learning under the master Alexander of Hales that seven years later at Paris, having attained the title of Master, he publicly expounded the books of the Sentences to the highest praise, which he afterward also illustrated with distinguished commentaries. Nor did he excel only in the erudition of learning, but also wonderfully in integrity of morals and innocence of life, in humility, meekness, contempt of earthly things, and desire for heavenly things; plainly worthy to be held as a model of perfection and to be called a saint by Blessed Thomas Aquinas, to whom he was joined in the highest charity. For when the latter had found him writing the life of Saint Francis, he said: Let us leave a Saint to labor for a Saint.

Enkindled by the flame of divine love, he was moved by a singular affection of devotion toward the Passion of Christ the Lord, which he continually meditated upon, and toward the Virgin Mother of God, to whom he had wholly consecrated himself; this devotion he strove most eagerly to stir up in others also by word and example, and to increase by his written works. Hence that sweetness of character, that grace of speech, and that charity poured out upon all, by which he bound the hearts of individuals to himself most closely. For this reason, when he had barely reached his thirty-fifth year, he was elected at Rome, with the unanimous consent of all, as Minister General of his order; and he bore that office entrusted to him for eighteen years with admirable prudence and the praise of holiness. Summoned to the Council of Lyons by Blessed Gregory X and created Cardinal Bishop of Albano, he rendered outstanding service in the difficult affairs of the council; through which both the dissensions of the schism were resolved and the dogmas of the Church were vindicated. In the midst of these labors, in the fifty-third year of his age, and in the year of salvation one thousand two hundred and seventy-four, he departed to the great grief of all, honored with funeral rites by the entire council, the Roman Pontiff himself being present. Sixtus IV, who had declared him illustrious by very many and very great miracles, enrolled him in the number of the Saints. He wrote many works, in which, joining the highest learning with the ardor of devotion, he moves the reader by his teaching; wherefore by Sixtus V he was deservedly honored with the title of Seraphic Doctor.
