The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,

5 Venit ergo rex David usque Bahúrim, et ecce egrediebátur inde vir de cognatióne domus Saul nómine Sémei fílius Gera; procedebátque egrédiens et maledicébat,
6 mittebátque lápides contra David et contra univérsos servos regis David. Omnis autem pópulus et univérsi bellatóres a dextro et a sinístro látere regis incedébant.
7 Ita autem loquebátur Sémei, cum maledíceret regi: Egrédere, egrédere, vir sánguinum et vir Bélial:
8 réddidit tibi Dóminus univérsum sánguinem domus Saul, quóniam invasísti regnum pro eo.
5 Then king David went as far as Bahurim. And behold, a man from the kindred of the house of Saul, named Shimei, the son of Gera, went out from there.
6 And going out, he continued on, and he was cursing, and throwing stones against David and against all the servants of king David.
7 And so, as he was cursing the king, Shimei said: 'Go away, go away, you man of blood, and you man of Belial!'
8 The Lord has repaid you for all the blood of the house of Saul. For you have usurped the kingdom in place of him. And so, the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Absalom, your son.

11 And the king said to Abishai and to all his servants: 'Behold, my son, who went forth from my loins, is seeking my life. How much more does a son of Benjamin do so now? Permit him, so that he may curse, in accord with the command of the Lord.
12 Perhaps the Lord may look with favor upon my affliction, and the Lord may repay me good, in place of the cursing of this day.'

The seven brothers, sons of Saint Felicity, were tried at Rome during the persecution of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, first by the blandishments and then by the threats of the prefect Publius, to make them renounce Christ and venerate the gods; and, through their own virtue and at their mother's urging, they persevered in the confession of the faith, and were put to death in various ways. Januarius was beaten with leaded whips; Felix and Philip were cudgeled; Sylvanus was hurled headlong from a height; Alexander, Vitalis, and Martialis were beheaded. Their mother obtained the same palm of martyrdom four months afterward: they rendered their spirits to the Lord on the sixth day before the Ides of July.

Rufina and Secunda, sisters, Roman virgins, having rejected marriage with Armentarius and Verinus to whom they had been betrothed by their parents, because they had vowed their virginity to Jesus Christ, were arrested under the emperors Valerian and Gallienus. When the prefect Junius could move them neither by promises nor by threats from their purpose, he ordered Rufina first to be beaten with rods; during her scourging Secunda addressed the judge thus: What is this? You honor my sister while you afflict me with disgrace? Command both of us to be beaten together, for we confess Christ God together. Inflamed by these words, the judge ordered both to be cast into a dark and fetid prison. When that place was at once filled with a most brilliant light and a most sweet fragrance, they were shut into a burning bath. And when they emerged from that also unharmed, they were at once cast with a stone tied to the neck into the Tiber; rescued from there by an Angel, they were beheaded outside the City on the Via Aurelia at the tenth milestone. Their bodies, buried by the matron Plautilla on her estate and afterward brought to Rome, were interred in the Constantinian basilica near the baptistery.

A great spectacle, brethren, has been placed before the eyes of our faith. With our ears we heard, with our hearts we beheld a mother wishing that her sons would finish this life before her — desires utterly contrary to the custom of humankind. For all people, as they depart this life, wish to go before their children, not to follow after them; but she desired to die last. For she was not losing her sons, but sending them ahead; nor did she look upon what life they were ending, but what life they were beginning. It is a small thing that she was a witness; we marvel rather that she was an encourager. Dearest brethren, the reading of the holy Gospel that has been recited is brief, but it is laden with the great weight of mysteries. For Jesus, our Creator and Redeemer, makes as though he does not know his Mother, and designates who is his mother and who are his kindred, not by the bond of flesh but by the union of spirit, saying: Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? For whoever does the will of my Father, who is in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother. By which words he signifies to us nothing other than that by following his commands he gathers many from among the Gentiles; and the people of Judah, from whose flesh he was born, he does not acknowledge.

But we must know that one who is the sister and brother of Christ by believing becomes his mother by preaching. To confirm this aptly for us, blessed Felicity is here, whose birthday we celebrate today; who, by believing, was a handmaid of Christ, and, by preaching, became a mother of Christ. For she feared to leave her seven sons alive in the flesh behind her — as it is read in the more authentic accounts of her acts — just as carnal parents usually fear to send their children ahead of them in death.
