7 Si autem in luce ambulámus sicut et ipse est in luce, societátem habémus ad ínvicem, et sanguis Iesu Christi, Fílii eius, emúndat nos ab omni peccáto.
8 Si dixérimus quóniam peccátum non habémus, ipsi nos sedúcimus, et véritas in nobis non est.
9 Si confiteámur peccáta nostra: fidélis est, et iustus, ut remíttat nobis peccáta nostra, et emúndet nos ab omni iniquitáte.

6 If we claim that we have fellowship with him, and yet we walk in darkness, then we are lying and not telling the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light, just as he also is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we claim that we have no sin, then we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, then he is faithful and just, so as to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all iniquity.
10 If we claim that we have not sinned, then we make him a liar, and his Word is not in us.

3 And we can be sure that we have known him by this: if we observe his commandments.
4 Whoever claims that he knows him, and yet does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the charity of God is perfected. And by this we know that we are in him.
6 Whoever declares himself to remain in him, ought to walk just as he himself walked.

Ascendámus cum Christo ínterim corde: cum dies eius promíssus advénerit, sequémur et córpore. Scire tamen debémus, fratres, quia cum Christo non ascéndit supérbia, non avarítia, non luxúria: nullum vítium nostrum ascéndit cum médico nostro. Et ídeo si post médicum desiderámus ascéndere, debémus vítia et peccáta depónere. We must know, however, brethren, that with Christ there did not ascend pride, nor avarice, nor lust: none of our vices ascended with our physician. And therefore if we desire to ascend after our physician, we must lay down our vices and sins. For all of them press upon us as if with certain fetters, and strive to bind us with the nets of sins: and therefore with the help of God, according to what the Psalmist says: Let us break their bonds: so that we may safely say to the Lord: You have broken my bonds, to you I will offer the sacrifice of praise.

The Resurrection of the Lord is our hope: the Ascension of the Lord is our glorification. Today we celebrate the solemnities of the Ascension. If, therefore, rightly, faithfully, devoutly, holily, and piously we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, let us ascend with him, and let our hearts be lifted up. But in ascending, let us not be puffed up, nor presume upon our own deeds as though upon merits that are ours. We ought to have our hearts lifted up to the Lord. For a heart lifted up but not to the Lord is called pride: but a heart lifted up to the Lord is called refuge. See, brothers, a great wonder. God is on high: you raise yourself up, and he flees from you; you humble yourself, and he descends to you. Why is this? Because he is exalted, and looks upon the humble, and knows the proud from afar. The humble he looks upon from near, to raise them up; the proud, that is, the haughty, he knows from afar, in order to cast them down.

It is first necessary for you to believe, that afterward through faith you may merit to behold God. For you wish to see God? Hear him himself: Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. First, therefore, think of purifying the heart: whatever you see there that displeases God, remove it.

The Lord Jesus, in the discourse which he spoke to his disciples after supper, being close to his Passion, as one about to go away and to leave them in bodily presence — yet to be with all his own until the end of the age in spiritual presence — exhorted them to endure the persecutions of the impious, whom he designated by the name of the world. From that world, however, he said that he had also chosen the disciples themselves: so that they might know that what they were, they owed to the grace of God; and that what they had been, they owed to their own vices.

And when he spoke of those who did not know him by whom he was sent, and yet hated both the Son and the Father — that is, both him who was sent and him by whom he was sent — (all of which we have already discussed in other sermons) — he came at last to the place where he says: "That the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: Because they have hated me without cause."

Then, as if in consequence, he added the passage which we have now undertaken to discuss: "But when the Paraclete comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness of me; and you will also bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning." What does this have to do with what he had said: "But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father; but that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: Because they have hated me without cause"? Was it not because the Paraclete, when the Spirit of truth comes, convicted by clearer witness those who had seen and hated? Indeed, he even converted some of those who had seen and still hated, turning them through his manifestation to the faith that works through love.
