Hymnus

Te, splendor et virtus Patris,
Te vita, Iesu, córdium,
Ab ore qui pendent tuo,
Laudámus inter Angelos.

Tibi mille densa míllium
Ducum coróna mílitat;
Sed éxplicat victor Crucem
Míchaël salútis sígnifer.

Dracónis hic dirum caput
In ima pellit tártara,
Ducémque cum rebéllibus
Cælésti ab arce fúlminat.

Contra ducem supérbiæ
Sequámur hunc nos príncipem,
Ut detur ex Agni throno
Nobis coróna glóriæ.

Deo Patri sit glória,
Qui, quos redémit Fílius,
Et Sanctus unxit Spíritus,
Per Angelos custódiat.
Amen.

O you, O Father's splendor and power,
O you, Jesus, life of hearts,
We who hang upon your lips
Praise you among the Angels.

A thousand dense thousands
Of leaders fight as your crown;
But Michael, the standard-bearer of salvation, victorious,
Untfurls the Cross.

He drives the dire head of the dragon
Down into the lowest tartarus,
And thunders their leader with the rebels
From the heavenly citadel.

Against the leader of pride
Let us follow this prince,
That from the throne of the Lamb
May be given us the crown of glory.

To God the Father be glory,
Who may guard through Angels
Those whom the Son has redeemed
And the Holy Spirit has anointed.
Amen.

Psalmus 8

Psalm 8

8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!
8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him? * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor: * and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition the beasts of the field.
8:9 The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.
8:10 O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Psalmus 10

Psalm 10

10:2 In Dómino confído: † quómodo dícitis ánimæ meæ: * Tránsmigra in montem sicut passer?

10:2 I trust in the Lord: how can you say to my soul, * Sojourn to the mountain, like a sparrow?
10:3 For behold, the sinners have bent their bow, they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, * so as to shoot arrows in the dark at the upright of heart.
10:4 For they have destroyed the things that you have completed: * but what has the just one done?
10:5a The Lord is in his holy temple, * the Lord's throne is in heaven.
10:5b His eyes look upon the poor: * his eyelids question the sons of men.
10:6 The Lord questions the just and the impious: * yet he who loves iniquity hates his own soul.
10:7 He will rain down snares upon sinners: * fire and brimstone and windstorms will be the portion of their cup.
10:8 For the Lord is just, and he has chosen justice: * his countenance has beheld equity.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 14

Psalm 14

14:1 Dómine, quis habitábit in tabernáculo tuo?

14:1 O Lord, who will dwell in your tabernacle? * or who will rest on your holy mountain?
14:2 He who walks without blemish, * and who works justice:
14:3a He who speaks the truth in his heart, * who has not acted deceitfully with his tongue:
14:3b Nor has he done evil to his neighbor, * and has not taken up a reproach against his neighbors.
14:4a In his sight, the malicious one has been reduced to nothing: * but he glorifies those who fear the Lord.
14:4b He who swears to his neighbor and does not deceive, * (5a) he who has not given his money in usury, nor accepted bribes against the innocent.
14:5b He who does these things: * will be undisturbed for eternity.

Amen.

Stetit Angelus iuxta aram templi.

An Angel stood beside the altar of the temple.

Habens thuríbulum áureum in manu sua.

Having a golden censer in his hand.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

Absolutio. Hear us, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on your servants: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.

Benedictio. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

Song 7:1-5

Dan 7:9-11

Dan 9:20-23

20 And while I was still speaking and praying and confessing my sins, and the sins of my people, Israel, and offering my prayers in the sight of my God, on behalf of the holy mountain of my God,
21 as I was still speaking in prayer, behold, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, flying swiftly, touched me at the time of the evening sacrifice.
22 And he instructed me, and he spoke to me and said, 'Now, Daniel, I have come forth to teach you and to help you understand.
23 At the beginning of your prayers, the message came forth, yet I have come to explain it to you because you are a man who is seeking.'

There was silence in heaven, while the dragon waged war with Michael the Archangel:

A voice was heard of thousands upon thousands saying: Salvation, honor, and power to almighty God. (Alleluia.)

Thousands upon thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stood before him.

A voice was heard of thousands upon thousands saying: Salvation, honor, and power to almighty God. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.

Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Dan 10:4-8

Dan 10:4-8

5 Et levávi óculos meos, et vidi: et ecce vir unus vestítus líneis, et renes eius accíncti auro obrýzo;

4 But on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was next to the great river, which is the Tigris.
5 And I lifted up my eyes, and I saw, and behold, one man clothed in linen, and his waist was wrapped with the finest gold,
6 and his body was like the golden stone, and his face had the appearance of lightning, and his eyes that of a burning lamp, and his arms and all that is downward all the way to the feet had the appearance of glowing brass, and his speaking voice was like the voice of a multitude.
7 But I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see it, but an exceedingly great terror rushed over them, and they fled into hiding.
8 And I, having been left alone, saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me, moreover, my appearance was altered, and I languished, not having any strength.

Stetit Angelus iuxta aram templi, habens thuríbulum áureum in manu sua, et data sunt ei incénsa multa:

An Angel stood by the altar of the temple, holding a golden censer in his hand, and much incense was given to him:

Et ascéndit fumus arómatum de manu Angeli in conspéctu Dómini. (Allelúia.)

And the smoke of the aromatics ascended from the hand of the Angel before the Lord. (Alleluia.)

In conspéctu Angelórum psallam tibi: adorábo ad templum sanctum tuum, et confitébor nómini tuo, Dómine.

In the sight of the Angels I will sing praise to you: I will worship toward your holy temple, and I will give praise to your name, O Lord.

Et ascéndit fumus arómatum de manu Angeli in conspéctu Dómini. (Allelúia.)

And the smoke of the aromatics ascended from the hand of the Angel before the Lord. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Dan 10:9-14

Dan 10:9-14

9 And I heard the voice of his words, and when I heard, I lay down in confusion on my face, and my face was close to the ground.
10 And behold, a hand touched me, and raised me onto my knees and the knuckles of my hands.
11 And he said to me, 'Daniel, man of longing, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand yourself upright, for I am now sent to you.'
12 And he said to me, 'Do not be afraid, Daniel, because from the first day that you set your heart to understand, by afflicting yourself in the sight of your God, your words have been heeded, and I have arrived because of your words.
13 But the leader of the kingdom of the Persians resisted me for twenty-one days, and behold, Michael, one of the primary leaders, came to help me, and I remained there next to the king of the Persians.
14 But I have come to teach you what will happen to your people in the latter days, because the vision is for a long time from now.'

In the sight of the Angels I will sing praise to you, and I will worship toward your holy temple:

Et confitébor nómini tuo, Dómine. (Allelúia.)

And I will give praise to your name, O Lord. (Alleluia.)

Super misericórdia tua et veritáte tua: quóniam magnificásti super nos nomen sanctum tuum.

For your mercy and your truth: because you have magnified your holy name above us.

Et confitébor nómini tuo, Dómine. (Allelúia.)

And I will give praise to your name, O Lord. (Alleluia.)

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

33:4 Magnify the Lord with me: * and let us extol his name in itself.
33:5 I sought the Lord, and he heeded me: * and he carried me away from all my tribulations.
33:6 Approach him and be enlightened: * and your faces will not be confounded.
33:7 This poor one cried out, and the Lord heeded him: * and he saved him from all his tribulations.
33:8 The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear him: * and he will rescue them.
33:9 Taste and see that the Lord is sweet: * blessed is the man who hopes in him.
33:10 Fear the Lord, all you his saints: * for there is no destitution for those who fear him.
33:11 The rich have been needy and hungry: * but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good thing.
33:12 Come forward, sons. Listen to me: * I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
33:13 Which is the man who wills life, * who chooses to see good days?
33:14 Prohibit your tongue from evil: * and your lips from speaking deceit.
33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good: * inquire about peace, and pursue it.
33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just: * and his ears are with their prayers.
33:17 But the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil: * to perish the remembrance of them from the earth.
33:18 The just cried out, and the Lord heard them: * and he freed them from all their tribulations.
33:19 The Lord is near to those who are troubled in heart: * and he will save the humble in spirit.
33:20 Many are the afflictions of the just: * and from them all the Lord will free them.
33:21 The Lord preserves all of their bones: * not one of them shall be broken.
33:22 The death of a sinner is very harmful: * and those who hate the just will fare badly.
33:23 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants: * and none of those who hope in him will fare badly.

That the Blessed Archangel Michael has appeared to men many times is confirmed both by the authority of the sacred Books and by the ancient tradition of the Saints. For this reason the memory of these events is celebrated in many places. As of old the synagogue of the Jews, so now the Church venerates him as the guardian and patron of God. Now under Gelasius I, Supreme Pontiff, there was a celebrated apparition of the Archangel Michael in Apulia on the summit of Mount Gargano, at the foot of which the people of Siponto dwell.

Hic est Míchaël Archángelus, princeps milítiæ Angelórum,

This is the Archangel Michael, prince of the heavenly host,

Whose honor bestows blessings upon peoples, and whose prayer leads them to the kingdoms of heaven. (Alleluia.)

Archángelus Míchaël præpósitus paradísi, quem honoríficant Angelórum cives.

The Archangel Michael, guardian of paradise, whom the citizens of Angels honor.

Whose honor bestows blessings upon peoples, and whose prayer leads them to the kingdoms of heaven. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.

Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

It came to pass that from the herds of a certain Garganus a bull strayed far away; and after a long search it was found halted at the entrance of a cave. When one of the men shot an arrow to strike the bull, the arrow turned back and fell upon the marksman himself. This event so struck with great fear those present, and thereafter all the others, that no one dared approach that cave any nearer. The men of Siponto therefore consulted their bishop, who, having imposed a three-day fast and prayer, declared that the matter ought to be inquired of God.

Venit Míchaël Archángelus cum multitúdine Angelórum, cui trádidit Deus ánimas Sanctórum,

The Archangel Michael came with a multitude of Angels, to whom God entrusted the souls of the Saints,

Ut perdúcat eas in paradísum exsultatiónis. (Allelúia.)

That he might lead them into the paradise of exultation. (Alleluia.)

Send forth, O Lord, your Holy Spirit from heaven, the spirit of wisdom and understanding.

Ut perdúcat eas in paradísum exsultatiónis. (Allelúia.)

That he might lead them into the paradise of exultation. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Post tríduum Míchaël Archángelus epíscopum monet in sua tutéla esse eum locum, eóque indício demonstrásse, velle ibi cultum Deo in sui et Angelórum memóriam adhibéri.

After three days, the Archangel Michael admonished the bishop that that place was under his protection, and by that sign had shown that he wished divine worship to be offered there in memory of him and of the Angels. Wherefore the bishop, together with the citizens, set out to go to that cave. And when they had seen it fashioned after the likeness of a temple, they began to celebrate divine offices in that place, which was afterwards made illustrious by many miracles. And not long after, Pope Boniface dedicated a church of Saint Michael in the great circus at Rome on the third day before the Kalends of October; on which day also the Church celebrates the memory of all the Angels. But the present day is consecrated by the apparition of the Archangel Michael.

But at that time Michael will rise up, the great leader, who stands up for the sons of your people:

And a time will come, such as has not been from the time that nations began, even until that time. (Alleluia.)

In témpore illo salvábitur pópulus tuus omnis, qui invéntus fúerit scriptus in libro vitæ.

And, at that time, your people will be saved, all who will be found written in the book.

And a time will come, such as has not been from the time that nations began, even until that time. (Alleluia.)

Amen.

And a time will come, such as has not been from the time that nations began, even until that time. (Alleluia.)

102:16 For the wind shall pass over him, and he shall not subsist: * and he shall know his place no more.
102:17 But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity, * and unto eternity upon those who fear him.
102:17 And his righteousness unto the children's children, * to those who keep his covenant:

Comment in Matth. can. 18

Comment in Matth. can. 18

The Lord teaches that only those who have returned to the nature of children shall enter the kingdom of heaven: that is, the vices of our bodies and souls are to be recalled through childlike simplicity. Now he called children all those who believe through the faith of hearing. For they follow their father, love their mother, know not how to wish evil to their neighbor, take no care for riches; they do not grow insolent, they do not hate, they do not lie, they believe what they are told, and they hold to be true what they hear. We must therefore return to the simplicity of children; for, established in it, we shall carry about the image of the Lord's humility.

In conspéctu géntium nolíte timére; vos enim in córdibus vestris adoráte et timéte Dóminum;

In the sight of the nations, do not be afraid; for in your hearts worship and fear the Lord;

Angelus enim eius vobíscum est. (Allelúia.)

For his Angel is with you. (Alleluia.)

Stetit Angelus iuxta aram templi, habens thuríbulum áureum in manu sua.

An Angel stood near the altar of the temple, having a golden censer in his hand.

Angelus enim eius vobíscum est. (Allelúia.)

For his Angel is with you. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

Woe to this world because of scandals. The humility of the Passion is a scandal to the world. For in this above all human ignorance is held fast: that under the disfigurement of the Cross, it was unwilling to receive the Lord of eternal glory. And what is so perilous for the world as not to have received Christ? He says indeed that it is necessary for scandals to come; because, for the Sacrament of restoring eternity to us, all the humility of his Passion in him had to be fulfilled.

Míchaël Archángelus venit in adiutórium pópulo Dei,

Michael the Archangel came to the aid of the people of God,

Stetit in auxílium pro animábus iustis. (Allelúia.)

He stood in support for the souls of the just. (Alleluia.)

Stetit Angelus iuxta aram templi, habens thuríbulum áureum in manu sua.

An Angel stood near the altar of the temple, having a golden censer in his hand.

Stetit in auxílium pro animábus iustis. (Allelúia.)

He stood in support for the souls of the just. (Alleluia.)

Amen.

Stetit in auxílium pro animábus iustis. (Allelúia.)

He stood in support for the souls of the just. (Alleluia.)

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

See that you do not despise one of these little ones who believe in me. He laid a most fitting bond of mutual love, especially on those who had truly believed in the Lord. For the Angels of the little ones see God daily, because the Son of Man came to save what was lost. Therefore both the Son of Man saves, and the Angels see God, and the Angels of the little ones preside over the prayers of the faithful. That Angels preside is an absolute authority. The prayers therefore of those saved through Christ are offered daily by Angels to God. Therefore he is dangerously despised whose desires and petitions are conveyed to the eternal and invisible God by the eager service and ministry of Angels.

(Sequens versus dicitur flexis genibus)

(The following verse is said kneeling)

(Brethren, when they begin 'Te ergo quaesumus,' departing from the Stalls, let them reverently bow at the words 'Quos pretioso' and the rest)

Te ergo quǽsumus, tuis fámulis súbveni, * quos pretióso sánguine redemísti.
Ætérna fac cum Sanctis tuis * in glória numerári.
Ætérna fac cum Sanctis tuis * in glória munerári.
Salvum fac pópulum tuum, Dómine, * et bénedic hereditáti tuæ.
Et rege eos, * et extólle illos usque in ætérnum.
Per síngulos dies * benedícimus te.
(Fit reverentia, secundum consuetudinem) Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, * et in sǽculum sǽculi.
Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, * et in sǽculum sǽculi.
Dignáre, Dómine, die isto * sine peccáto nos custodíre.
Miserére nostri, Dómine, * miserére nostri.
Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
In te, Dómine, sperávi: * non confúndar in ætérnum.

And so we beg you, help your servants, * redeemed by your most precious blood.
Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.
Number them * among your Saints in eternal glory.
Save your people, Lord, * and bless your inheritance.
Shepherd them * and raise them to eternal life.
Day by day * we bless you,
(A bow is made, according to custom) and we praise your name * for endless ages evermore.
and we praise your name * for endless ages evermore.
Be gracious, Lord, on this day, * and keep us from all sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, * have mercy.
May your mercy be upon us, Lord, * as we place our trust in you.
In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: * let me never be put to shame.
