Whence does the mother of the sons of Zebedee have the notion of a kingdom, so that when the Lord had said: The Son of Man shall be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified — and while this announcement of the ignominy of the Passion filled the disciples with fear — she should petition for the glory of his triumph? For this reason, as I think: because after all these things the Lord had said, And on the third day he shall rise again; the woman supposed that he would reign immediately after the Resurrection, and that what is promised at the second coming would be fulfilled at the first; and, with feminine eagerness she desires present things, unmindful of the future.

Cálicem in Scriptúris divínis passiónem intellígimus, iuxta illud: Pater, si possíbile est, tránseat a me calix iste; et in Psalmo: Quid retríbuam Dómino pro ómnibus quæ retríbuit mihi? The Mother makes the request, and the Lord speaks to the disciples, understanding that her petition springs from the desire of her sons. Can you drink the chalice that I am about to drink? In the divine Scriptures we understand by the chalice the Passion, according to that word: Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass from me; and in the Psalm: What shall I return to the Lord for all that he has given to me? I will take the chalice of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. And he at once makes known what this chalice is: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints.

Sed, si legámus ecclesiásticas histórias, in quibus fertur, quod et ipse propter martýrium sit missus in fervéntis ólei dólium, et inde ad suscipiéndam corónam Christi athléta procésserit, statímque relegátus in Patmos ínsulam sit; vidébimus martýrio ánimum non defuísse, et bibísse Ioánnem cálicem confessiónis, quem et tres púeri in camíno ignis bibérunt, licet persecútor non fúderit sánguinem.

It is asked how the sons of Zebedee — namely, James and John — drank the chalice of martyrdom, since Scripture relates that only James the Apostle was beheaded by Herod, while John ended his life by a natural death. But if we read the ecclesiastical histories, in which it is recorded that he too was cast into a vessel of boiling oil on account of martyrdom, and proceeded thence as an athlete of Christ to receive the crown, and was immediately exiled to the island of Patmos; we shall see that the spirit for martyrdom was not lacking, and that John drank the chalice of confession — which the three young men also drank in the fiery furnace — even though the persecutor did not shed his blood.
