At Damascus, the birthday of Blessed John of Damascus, Priest, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church, celebrated for learning and holiness. He strenuously contended by word and by writing against Leo the Isaurian for the veneration of the holy Images; and when, at the calumnies of that Emperor, his right hand had been cut off at the command of the Saracen prince, commending himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose Images he had defended, he forthwith received his right hand restored whole and sound. His feast is celebrated on the twenty-seventh of March.
