2 I know your works, and your hardship and patient endurance, and that you cannot stand those who are evil. And so, you have tested those who declare themselves to be Apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars.
3 And you have patient endurance for the sake of my name, and you have not fallen away.
4 But I have this against you: that you have relinquished your first charity.
5 And so, call to mind the place from which you have fallen, and do penance, and do the first works. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

9 I know your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich, and that you are blasphemed by those who declare themselves to be Jews and are not, but who are a synagogue of Satan.
10 You should fear nothing amid those things which you will suffer. Behold, the devil will cast some of you into prison, so that you may be tested. And you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give to you the crown of life.

13 I know where you dwell, where the seat of Satan is, and that you hold to my name and have not denied my faith, even in those days when Antipas was my faithful witness, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.
14 But I have a few things against you. For you have, in that place, those who hold to the doctrine of Balaam, who instructed Balak to cast a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat and to commit fornication.
15 And you also have those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.
16 So do penance to the same extent. If you do less, I will come to you quickly and I will fight against these ones with the sword of my mouth.
17 Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches. To him who prevails, I will give the hidden manna. And I will give to him a white emblem, and on the emblem, a new name has been written, which no one knows, except the one who receives it.

Mary was betrothed to Joseph — or rather (as the Evangelist states) to a man whose name was Joseph. He is called man not because he was a husband, but because he was a man of virtue; or rather because, according to another Evangelist, he was called not simply a man, but her man, and is rightly called what he is necessarily thought to be. He ought therefore to be called her man, because it was necessary that he also be thought so; just as he merited to be called, though not to be, the father of the Savior — that he might be thought to be — as the same Evangelist says: And Jesus himself was beginning, as it were, thirty years of age, as it was supposed, the son of Joseph.

There is no doubt that Joseph, to whom the Mother of the Savior was betrothed, was a good and faithful man. Faithful, I say, and prudent servant, whom the Lord appointed as the comfort of his Mother, the nurturer of his flesh, and, finally, the most faithful collaborator on earth in the great counsel. To this is added that he is said to have been of the house of David. Truly of the house of David, truly of royal stock descended this man Joseph, noble by birth, more noble by mind. Plainly a son of David, not degenerate from his father David; altogether, I say, a son of David, not only in flesh, but in faith, in holiness, in devotion; one whom the Lord found, as another David, according to his own heart; to whom he could safely entrust the most sacred and most secret treasury of his own heart; to whom, as to another David, he revealed the hidden and secret things of his wisdom, and granted that he not be ignorant of the mystery which none of the princes of this age knew.

Quod per Salomónem Matthǽus generatiónem derivándum putávit, Lucas vero per Nathan, álteram regálem, álteram sacerdotálem Christi famíliam vidétur osténdere. Quod non ita accípere debémus, quod álterum áltero vérius; sed alter álteri pari fide et veritáte concórdet. Fuit enim vere et secúndum carnem regális et sacerdotális famíliæ, Rex ex régibus, Sacérdos ex sacerdótibus; licet oráculum non de carnálibus, sed de cæléstibus exprimátur: quóniam et Rex in Dei virtúte lætátur, cui iudícium a Patre Rege defértur, et Sacérdos est in ætérnum, secúndum quod scriptum est: Tu es Sacérdos in ætérnum secúndum órdinem Melchísedech.

That Matthew thought the genealogy was to be derived through Solomon, while Luke derives it through Nathan, seems to indicate that the one shows the royal family of Christ, the other the priestly. This is not to be understood as meaning that one is more true than the other; rather, the one accords with the other in equal faith and truth. For he was truly, according to the flesh, of royal and priestly family — a King from kings, a Priest from priests — though the oracle speaks not of earthly but of heavenly things. For the King rejoices in the power of God, to whom judgment is committed by the Father and King; and he is a Priest for ever, according to what is written: You are a Priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Both, then, rightly preserved the faith: Matthew proved the lineage traced through kings, and Luke, by deriving the series of ancestry transmitted by God to Christ through priests, declared that origin itself to be the more sacred. At the same time, in this the figure of the calf is also signified, because he judges the priestly mystery to be everywhere to be preserved. Nor should you wonder if, according to Luke, there are more successions from Abraham to Christ, and fewer according to Matthew, since you acknowledge that the lineage ran through different persons. For it can happen that some lived long lives, while men of another generation departed at an early age; since we see that very many old men live to see their grandchildren, while others die as soon as they have received children.

We also observe this: that Saint Matthew records that Jacob, who was the father of Joseph, was the son of Matthan; but Luke describes Joseph, to whom Mary was betrothed, as the son of Heli, and Heli as the son of Melchi. How can one man have two fathers, namely Heli and Jacob? He is said to be the son of two men because he became the son of one by natural generation and of the other according to the law. In this precept of the law the people of Israel did not understand that the future continuance of the offspring of the dead was promised to us, but taking it according to the letter, they corrupted the grace of the oracle. For it was another kind of brother who was to raise up the offspring of a dead brother — not a brother according to the kinship of the flesh, but according to the purity of grace. And therefore perhaps a brother did not redeem: a man redeemed; because not a blood-brother, but the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, extended the grace of resurrection.
