33:14 Prohibit your tongue from evil: * and your lips from speaking deceit.

33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just: * and his ears are with their prayers.
33:17 But the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil: * to perish the remembrance of them from the earth.

33:19 The Lord is near to those who are troubled in heart: * and he will save the humble in spirit.
33:20 Many are the afflictions of the just: * and from them all the Lord will free them.

33:22 The death of a sinner is very harmful: * and those who hate the just will fare badly.

44:15b After her, virgins will be led to the King: * her neighbors will be brought to you.
44:16 They will be brought with gladness and exultation: * they will be led into the temple of the King.
44:17 For your fathers, sons have been born to you: * you will establish them as leaders over all the earth.

16 Cum autem venissémus Romam, permíssum est Paulo manére síbimet cum custodiénte se mílite.
17 Post tértium autem diem convocávit primos Iudæórum. Cumque conveníssent, dicébat eis: Ego, viri fratres, nihil advérsus plebem fáciens, aut morem patérnum, vinctus ab Ierosólymis tráditus sum in manus Romanórum,
18 qui cum interrogatiónem de me habuíssent, voluérunt me dimíttere, eo quod nulla esset causa mortis in me.
19 Contradicéntibus autem Iudǽis, coáctus sum appelláre Cǽsarem, non quasi gentem meam habens áliquid accusáre.
20 Propter hanc ígitur causam rogávi vos vidére, et álloqui. Propter spem enim Israël caténa hac circúmdatus sum.

16 And when we had arrived at Rome, Paul was given permission to stay by himself, with a soldier to guard him.
17 And after the third day, he called together the leaders of the Jews. And when they had convened, he said to them: 'Noble brothers, I have done nothing against the people, nor against the customs of the fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18 And after they held a hearing about me, they would have released me, because there was no case for death against me.
19 But with the Jews speaking against me, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, though it was not as if I had any kind of accusation against my own nation.
20 And so, because of this, I requested to see you and to speak to you. For it is because of the hope of Israel that I am encircled with this chain.'

℟ Christus resúrgens ex mórtuis, iam non móritur, mors illi ultra non dominábitur: quod enim mórtuus est peccáto, mórtuus est semel:

℟ Christ, rising from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over him: for in that he died, he died to sin once:

21 'We have not received letters about you from Judea, nor have any of the other new arrivals among the brothers reported or spoken anything evil against you.
22 But we are asking to hear your opinions from you, for concerning this sect, we know that it is being spoken against everywhere.'
23 And having appointed a day for him, many came to him at his guest lodgings, to whom he was expounding and bearing witness to the kingdom of God, and persuading them about Jesus from the law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning until evening.
24 And some believed the things that he was saying, yet others did not believe.

Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, according to what he had heard Peter recounting, wrote at the request of the brethren at Rome a brief Gospel. When Peter heard of it, he approved it and gave it to the Church to be read by his authority. Mark then, taking up the Gospel he had himself composed, went to Egypt, and preaching Christ first at Alexandria, established a Church of such doctrine and sobriety of life that he constrained all the followers of Christ to follow his example.

Finally, Philo, the most eloquent of the Jews, seeing at Alexandria the first church still judaizing, wrote a book on their manner of life in praise, as it were, of his own people. And as Luke narrates that those who believed in Jerusalem had all things in common, so he too committed to memory what he saw being done at Alexandria under the teacher Mark. He died in the eighth year of Nero, and was buried at Alexandria, with Anianus succeeding him.

Sancta quátuor animália, quæ prophetíæ spíritu futúra prævidéntur, subtíli narratióne describúntur, cum dícitur: Quátuor fácies uni, et quátuor pennæ uni. Quid per fáciem, nisi notítia; et quid per pennas, nisi volátus exprímitur? Per fáciem quippe unusquísque cognóscitur: per pennas vero in altum ávium córpora sublevántur. Fácies ítaque ad fidem pértinet, penna ad contemplatiónem. Per fidem namque ab omnipoténti Deo cognóscimur, sicut ipse de suis óvibus dicit: Ego sum pastor bonus, et cognósco oves meas, et cognóscunt me meæ. Qui rursus ait: Ego scio quos elégerim. Per contemplatiónem vero, qua super nosmetípsos tóllimur, quasi in áëra levámur.

The four holy living creatures, which are foreseen by the spirit of prophecy as future realities, are described with subtle narration, when it is said: Four faces to each one, and four wings to each one. What is expressed by the face, but knowledge; and what by the wings, but flight? For by the face each one is recognized; by the wings, the bodies of birds are lifted into the heights. The face, therefore, pertains to faith, the wing to contemplation. For by faith we are known to almighty God, as he himself says of his sheep: I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. Who says again: I know those whom I have chosen. By contemplation, however, by which we are lifted above ourselves, we are raised as it were into the air.

Sic enim habes: Nonne hic est fílius Ioseph fabri? Díximus supra qua ratióne per Vírginem, díximus étiam, qua ratióne per desponsátam, et quare census témpore nasci volúerit Dóminus salutáris; non aliénum étiam vidétur, ut qua ratióne fabrum patrem habúerit, declarémus. No one ought to be troubled that it is written: Who was thought to be the son of Joseph. For rightly was he thought to be so, since he was not so by nature; but he was thought to be so because Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph her husband, had borne him. For you have it thus: Is not this the son of Joseph the carpenter? We have said above by what reason he was born through a Virgin; we have also said by what reason through one betrothed, and why the Lord of salvation willed to be born at the time of the census. It does not seem out of place either to declare by what reason he had a carpenter for a father. For by this figure he shows that he has as father one who, as maker of all things, fashioned the world. For even if human things are not to be compared with divine, yet the figure is complete: that the Father of Christ works by fire and by spirit, and like a good craftsman of the soul, trims away our vices; quickly bringing the axe to unfruitful trees, skilled at cutting what is meager, preserving what towers above, softening the rigidity of minds by the fire of the Spirit, and shaping the whole human race for various purposes by the diverse quality of their ministries.

Why the genealogy of Joseph rather than that of Mary is described — since it was Mary who conceived Christ by the Holy Spirit and Joseph seems a stranger to the generation of the Lord — we might doubt, were we not instructed by the custom of the Scriptures, which always seeks the origin of the husband. For the person of the husband is the one who preserves the dignity of lineage in the senate and the other public bodies of cities. How unseemly it would have been, if the origin of the husband being passed over, the origin of the woman were sought — so that he who was to be proclaimed to all the peoples of the world would seem not to have had a father! You see everywhere that the family runs through the generations of men. Do not wonder that the origin of Joseph is described. For he who was born according to the flesh had to follow the custom of the flesh; and he who came into the world had to be described according to the manner of the world — especially since in the lineage of Joseph the lineage of Mary is also included.

Why holy Matthew began to enumerate the genealogy of Christ from Abraham, but holy Luke traced it from Christ all the way to God, seems to require explanation. Luke thought that his origin should be referred back to God, because God is the true generator of Christ — either as Father according to true generation, or as the author of the mystical gift according to the regeneration of baptism. And therefore he did not begin to trace his genealogy from the beginning; but after he had set forth his baptism, wishing to demonstrate God as the Author of all things through baptism. He also asserted that Christ proceeded from God in the order of continuous succession, weaving everything together, so as to demonstrate him as Son of God both according to nature and according to grace and according to the flesh. What more evident sign of divine generation than that when he was about to speak of the generation, he first set the Father himself speaking: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased?
