Your abdomen is like a bundle of wheat, surrounded with lilies. 3 Your two breasts are like two young twin does. 4 Your neck is like a tower of ivory. Your eyes like the fish ponds at Heshbon, which are at the entrance to the daughter of the multitude. Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon, which looks out toward Damascus. 5 Your head is like Carmel; and the hair of your head is like the purple of a king bound in channels.

25 Therefore, know and take heed: from the going forth of the word to build up Jerusalem again, until the Christ leader, there will be seven weeks of years, and sixty-two weeks of years; and the wide path will be built again, and the walls, in a time of anguish.

26 And after sixty-two weeks of years, the Christ leader will be slain. And the people who have denied him will not be his. And the people, when their leader arrives, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will be devastation, and, after the end of the war, the desolation will be set up.
27 But he will confirm a covenant with many for one week of years; and for half of the week of years, victim and sacrifice will nearly cease; but there will be in the temple the abomination of desolation. And the desolation will continue even to the consummation and the end.

Appáruit Zacharíæ Angelus, stans a dextris altáris incénsi. Bene Angelus et in templo, et iuxta altáre, et dextris appáret; quia vidélicet et veri sacerdótis advéntum, et mystérium sacrifícii universális, et cæléstis doni gáudium prǽdicat. Nam, sicut per sinístram præséntia, sic per déxteram sæpe bona prænuntiántur ætérna. Iuxta quod in sapiéntiæ laude cánitur: Longitúdo diérum in déxtera eius; in sinístra illíus divítiæ et glória. Treméntem Zacharíam confórtet Angelus, quia, sicut humánæ fragilitátis est spiritális creatúræ visióne turbári, ita et angélicas benignitátis est pavéntes de aspéctu suo mortáles mox blandiéndo solári. At contra dæmónicæ est ferocitátis, quos sui præséntia térritos sénserit, amplióri semper horróre concútere, qua nulla mélius ratióne quam fide superátur intrépida.

The Angel appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. Fittingly the Angel appears both in the temple, and near the altar, and at the right side; for he foretells indeed the coming of the true Priest, the mystery of the universal sacrifice, and the joy of the heavenly gift. For as by the left, present things, so by the right, eternal goods are often prefigured. In accordance with which it is sung in praise of wisdom: Length of days is in her right hand; in her left hand riches and glory. The Angel comforts the trembling Zechariah, because, just as it is of human frailty to be troubled by the vision of a spiritual creature, so it is of angelic benignity to soothe with gentle words those mortals who are afraid at the sight of it. On the contrary, it is of demonic ferocity to shake with ever greater terror those whom it perceives to be terrified by its presence — a ferocity that can be overcome by no better means than by undaunted faith.

℟ It came to pass that while Zechariah was performing the priestly function in the order of his division, as God was directing,

Adeo autem ille, iam suæ ætátis et infœcúndæ cóniugis memor, nasci sibi fílios desperábat, ut nec Angelo hoc promitténti créderet. Sed quod dicit: Exaudíta est deprecátio tua, pro pópuli redemptióne signíficat; Et uxor tua páriet tibi fílium, eiúsdem redemptiónis órdinem pandit, quod vidélicet natus Zacharíæ fílius Redemptóri illíus pópuli præconándo sit iter factúrus. Quia enim Zacharíam, pro plebe supplicántem, díxerat exaudítum, docet quo órdine plebs eádem salvári et pérfici débeat, ad prædicatiónem vidélicet Ioánnis pæniténdo et credéndo in Christum.

The Angel, declaring the prayer heard, immediately promises the birth of his wife. Not that he who had entered to offer for the people, having left aside the public prayers, could have been able to pray for the receiving of sons, especially since no one prays for what he despairs of receiving. But indeed he, already mindful of his own age and of his barren wife, so despaired that sons would be born to him that he did not believe even the Angel who was promising this. But what he says: "Your prayer has been heard," signifies the redemption of the people; and "Your wife shall bear you a son" unfolds the order of that same redemption — namely, that the son born to Zechariah would go before the Redeemer of that people by his preaching. For since he had said that Zechariah, as he was interceding for the people, had been heard, he teaches the order in which that same people should be saved and perfected — namely, by repenting at the preaching of John and believing in Christ.

Zacharias, hesitating at the greatness of the promises, seeks a sign by which he may believe — he for whom the very vision or address of the Angel alone should have sufficed as a sign. Wherefore he paid the merited penalty of his distrust in silence: he who had doubted whether what God had promised could come to pass was justly condemned to silence, so that he who had not believed in the word of God might not be able to use human words.

Non árbitror hunc ángelum de minóribus esse, qui quálibet ex causa crebra sóleant ad terras fungi legatióne. Quod ex eius nómine palam intélligi dícitur, quod interpretátio Fortitúdo Dei dícitur; et quia non ab álio áliquo forte excellentióre se (ut ássolet) spíritu, sed ab ipso Deo mitti perhibétur. Propter hoc ergo pósitum est, A Deo. Vel ídeo dictum est, A Deo, ne cui, vel beatórum spirítuum suum Deus, ántequam Vírgini, revelásse putétur consílium, excépto dumtáxat Archángelo Gabriéle; qui útique tantæ inter suos inveníri potúerit excelléntiæ, ut tali et nómine dignus haberétur et núntio.

I do not consider this Angel to be among those lesser ones who for whatever reason are accustomed to perform frequent embassies to earth. This is plainly understood from his name, whose interpretation is said to be Strength of God; and because he is said to be sent not by some other spirit stronger than himself (as usually happens) but by God himself. For this reason it is put: From God. Or it is said From God, lest anyone should think that God revealed his counsel to any of the blessed spirits before he revealed it to the Virgin — with the sole exception of the Archangel Gabriel; who could certainly have been found to be of such preeminent rank among his companions that he was judged worthy both of such a name and of such a message.

Nec discórdat nomen a núntio. Dei quippe virtútem Christum quem mélius nuntiáre decébat quam hunc, quem símile nomen honórat? Nam quid est áliud fortitúdo, quam virtus? Non autem dedécens aut incóngruum videátur, Dóminum et núntium commúni censéri vocábulo; cum símilis in utróque appellatiónis, non sit tamen utriúsque símilis causa. Aliter quippe Christus fortitúdo vel virtus Dei dícitur, áliter Angelus; Angelus enim tantum nuncupatíve, Christus autem étiam substantíve.

Nor does the name disagree with the messenger. For who was more fittingly to announce Christ as the power of God than he whom a similar name honors? For what else is fortitude but power? Nor should it seem unbecoming or incongruous that the Lord and the messenger should be regarded under a common name; for though there is a likeness in the title of both, the reason for the title is not the same in each. For Christ is called the strength or power of God in one way, and the Angel in another; the Angel is so called only by attribution, but Christ both by attribution and by substance.

Christ is called and is the power of God, who, coming upon the strong man armed who was accustomed to guard his courtyard in peace, overcame him with his own arm; and so powerfully snatched from him the vessels of captivity. The Angel, moreover, is called the strength of God, either because he merited this prerogative of office, by which he announced the coming of that same power; or because he was to strengthen the Virgin, who by nature was timid, simple, and modest, lest she be seized with fear at the newness of the miracle — which he also did, saying: Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God. It is fitting, therefore, that Gabriel was chosen for this work; or rather, since such a commission was laid upon him, he is rightly designated by such a name.
