Si ergo quid signíficet hoc quod factum est, cogitémus: genus humánum est iste cæcus. Hæc enim cǽcitas cóntigit in primo hómine per peccátum, de quo omnes oríginem dúximus, non solum mortis, sed étiam iniquitátis. Si enim cǽcitas est infidélitas, et illuminátio fides: quem fidélem, quando venit Christus, invénit? The things which our Lord Jesus Christ did are both wondrous and astonishing deeds, and words: deeds, because they were done; words, because they are signs. If, then, we consider what is signified by what was done: this blind man is the human race. For this blindness came upon the first man through sin, from whom all of us have drawn our origin — not only of death, but also of iniquity. For if blindness is unbelief and enlightenment is faith, what believer did Christ find when he came? Since the Apostle, born among the race of the prophets, says: We also were once by nature children of wrath, as were the rest. If children of wrath, children of vengeance, children of punishment, children of Gehenna — how by nature, unless because, through the sin of the first man, vice took root as nature? If vice took root as nature, then according to the mind every man is born blind.

The Lord came: what did he do? He commended a great mystery. He spat upon the ground, and from his saliva he made clay: because the Word was made flesh, and anointed the eyes of the blind man. He was anointed, but did not yet see. He sent him to the pool that is called Siloam. Now it was important for the Evangelist to preserve for us the name of this pool, and he says: which is interpreted, Sent. You already know who is the Sent One. For if that One had not been sent, none of us would have been freed from iniquity. He therefore washed his eyes in that pool which is interpreted, Sent; he was baptized in Christ. If therefore when he baptized him in himself in some manner he then gave him light: when he anointed him, he perhaps made him a catechumen.
℟ Ecce mitto Angelum meum, qui præcédat te, et custódiat semper:
℟ Behold, I send my Angel, who shall go before you, and keep you always:
Obsérva et audi vocem meam, et inimícus ero inimícis tuis, et affligéntes te afflígam: et præcédet te Angelus meus.
Observe and hear my voice, and I will be an enemy to your enemies, and I will afflict those who afflict you; and my Angel shall go before you.

Ask, and he answers. Ask him, in whom does he believe? By the very fact that he is a catechumen, he says: In Christ. Behold, just now I speak both to the faithful and to catechumens. What I said about the spittle and the clay? That the Word was made flesh; this the catechumens hear: but for what they have been anointed it does not suffice them; let them hasten to the font, if they seek the light.

Cyril of Jerusalem, from his tender years devoted supremely to the study of the divine scriptures, advanced so greatly in the knowledge of them that he became a strenuous defender of the orthodox faith. Imbued with monastic principles, he devoted himself to perpetual continence and every stricter rule of life. After being ordained presbyter by Saint Maximus, Bishop of Jerusalem, he fulfilled with the highest praise the task of preaching the divine word to the faithful and teaching the catechumens, and wrote those truly wonderful catecheses in which, having comprehended clearly and copiously the whole of ecclesiastical doctrine, he defended firmly the individual dogmas of religion against the enemies of the faith. He discussed these matters so precisely and distinctly that he overthrew not only the heresies that had already arisen, but also those yet to come, as it were in prophetic foresight, as he demonstrated in asserting the real presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the wonderful Sacrament of the Eucharist. When the holy Maximus had died, he was appointed to his place by the bishops of the province.

In the episcopate, he endured many wrongs and calamities for the sake of the faith from the factions of the Arians, just as blessed Athanasius, his contemporary, had done. For they, bearing ill that Cyril vehemently resisted the heresies, attacked him with false accusations, and in a conventicle deposed him and drove him from his see. To escape their fury, he fled to Tarsus in Cilicia and endured the hardship of exile as long as Constantius lived. After his death, when Julian the Apostate had come to power, Cyril was able to return to Jerusalem, where with ardent zeal he devoted himself to recalling his flock from errors and vices. But again, under the Emperor Valens, he was forced into exile, until, peace having been restored to the Church by Theodosius the Great and the cruelty and audacity of the Arians suppressed, he was received with honors by that same emperor as a most valiant athlete of Christ and restored to his see. How strenuously and holily he fulfilled the duties of his lofty office is clearly evident from the flourishing state at that time of the Church of Jerusalem, which Saint Basil describes, having stayed there for some time while venerating the holy places.

We have received it as handed down to memory that the holiness of this venerable prelate was illustrated by heavenly signs from God. Among these is recounted the famous apparition of a cross, more radiant than the rays of the sun, which adorned the beginnings of his episcopate. Both pagans and Christians were eyewitnesses of this prodigy together with Cyril himself, who, having first given thanks in the Church to God, described it by letter to the Emperor Constantius. Nor less worthy of admiration is what befell the Jews, when they were attempting by order of the impious Emperor Julian to restore the temple overthrown by Titus. For when a violent earthquake arose and vast globes of flame burst forth from the ground,

In consummatione porro sæculorum cum advenisset illud ipsum Verbum Patris, quod Moysi antea locutum fuerat, rursus hoc præceptum dedit: Cum vos, inquiens, persecuti fuerint in civitate ista, fugite in aliam. Pauloque post subiicit: Cum videritis illam abominationem desolationis quæ dicta est per Danielem prophetam, consistentem in loco sancto (qui legit, intelligat), tunc qui in Iudǽa sunt fugiant ad montes et qui in tecto est, ne descendat tollere aliquid de domo sua: et qui in agro est, non revertatur tollere tunicam suam.
In the law it was commanded that cities of refuge be established, so that those who in any way were sought for death might be preserved. Then, at the end of the ages, when that very Word of the Father had come — who had previously spoken to Moses — he gave this commandment again: When they persecute you in one city, he said, flee to another. And a little after he adds: When you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place — let the reader understand — then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let him who is on the housetop not come down to take anything from his house; and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

The Saints, knowing this, maintained such a rule of life in their conduct. For what the Lord has now commanded, he also spoke in the Saints before his coming in the flesh; and this rule leads men to perfection. For what God has commanded must without fail be done. And therefore the Word himself, made man for our sake, did not think it unworthy — when he was sought — to hide himself as we do; and when he suffered persecution, to flee and to avoid ambushes. But when he himself had brought about the time appointed by himself, in which he willed to suffer in the body for all, he freely gave himself up to those who lay in wait for him.

℟ Behold, I send my Angel, who shall go before you, and keep you always:

This, therefore, was presented to the senses, so that the mind might be lifted up; and displayed to the eyes, so that the understanding might be exercised: that we might marvel at the invisible God through visible works, and, raised to faith and purified through faith, might also desire to see him himself invisible, whom we had come to know as invisible through visible things. Yet it is not enough to contemplate this in the miracles of Christ. Let us question the miracles themselves, asking what they say to us about Christ: for they have, if they are understood, a language of their own. For since Christ himself is the Word of God, even the deed of the Word is a word to us.
