The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.
The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.
More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.
Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.
In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,

Manus, id est ópera, non córporis útique, sed ánimæ lavándæ sunt, ut fiat in illis verbum Dei. Ipse autem respóndens ait illis: Quare et vos transgredímini mandátum Dei propter traditiónem vestram? Falsam calúmniam vera responsióne confútat. Wondrous is the folly of the Pharisees and scribes. They accuse the Son of God of not observing the traditions and precepts of men: For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. Hands, that is works, are to be washed—not those of the body, certainly, but those of the soul—so that the word of God may be wrought in them. But he, answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? He refutes the false accusation with a true reply. Since you, he says, neglect the commandments of the Lord on account of the traditions of men, why do you think my disciples are to be blamed for making little of the precepts of the elders, so as to keep the ordinances of God?

For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever shall curse father or mother, let him die the death. But you say: Whoever shall say to his father or mother, A gift, whatever proceeds from me, shall profit you; and he shall not honor his father or his mother. In the Scriptures, honor is understood not so much in salutations and the showing of deference, as in almsgiving and the offering of gifts. Honor, says the Apostle, widows who are truly widows. Here honor is understood as a gift. And in another place: Let elders be held worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and teaching of God. And by this commandment we are commanded not to muzzle the ox that treads out the grain: and the laborer is worthy of his hire.

The Lord had commanded, out of regard either for weakness or age or the poverty of parents, that children should honor their parents, even by ministering to their bodily needs. The scribes and Pharisees, wishing to subvert this most prudent law of God so as to introduce impiety under the guise of piety, taught the most wicked of sons that, if anyone wished to vow to God the things that ought to be offered to his parents — who is the true Father — then the offering to the Lord is to take precedence over the duty owed to parents; or at any rate that the parents themselves, seeing that things had been consecrated to God, would refrain from them for fear of incurring the crime of sacrilege, and so would be reduced to destitution. And thus it came about that the offering of children, under the pretext of the temple and of God, fell as profit to the priests.
