19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.
20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.
22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth.
26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.

Titus, having been formed in the faith, sacraments, and mysteries of Christianity by the very preaching of the Apostle Paul, was found to have shone upon the then-nascent Church with such a light of holiness that he merited to be numbered among the disciples of the same Teacher of the nations. Taken as a sharer in the burden of preaching, he was so dear to Paul by his zeal for the Gospel and his fidelity that Paul himself, when he had come to Troas for the sake of the Gospel of Christ, testified that he had found no rest in his spirit because he had not found there his brother Titus. Sent by the Apostle to Corinth, he discharged the office of this mission with that wisdom and gentleness — directed especially toward gathering almsgiving from the faithful's piety for the relief of the Church of the Hebrews in need — which not only kept the Corinthians firm in the faith of Christ, but also aroused among them longing, weeping, and zeal for Paul, who had first instructed them. To sow in the meantime among nations distinct in language and place the seed of the divine word, having covered many journeys by land and sea, and with great firmness of soul having endured cares and labors in service of the trophy of the Cross, he landed with his leader Paul on the island of Crete. Since then a bishop had been chosen by the Apostle himself for this church, there is no doubt that he conducted himself in that office in such a way that, according to the admonitions of his teacher Paul himself, he showed himself an example of good works in doctrine, in integrity, in gravity.

At last, full of merits and of days, in the ninety-fourth year of his age, on the day before the Nones of January, he fell asleep in the Lord with the precious death of the just, and was buried in the church where he had been appointed minister by the Apostle. His name, commended especially by Saint John Chrysostom and by Saint Jerome, is inscribed in the Roman Martyrology on the same day; and the Supreme Pontiff Pius IX commanded his feast to be celebrated by the universal Church.

Ecce enim binos ad prædicándum discípulos Dóminus mittit: quátenus hoc nobis tácitus ínnuat, quia qui caritátem erga álterum non habet, prædicatiónis offícium suscípere nullátenus debet. Bene autem dícitur, quia misit eos ante fáciem suam in omnem civitátem et locum, quo erat ipse ventúrus. Prædicatóres enim suos Dóminus séquitur: quia prædicátio prǽvenit, et tunc ad mentis nostræ habitáculum Dóminus venit, quando verba exhortatiónis præcúrrunt: atque per hoc véritas in mente suscípitur.

Behold, the Lord sends out his disciples two by two to preach: that by this he may silently indicate to us that whoever has no charity toward another ought by no means to take up the office of preaching. And it is well said that he sent them before his face into every town and place where he himself was about to come. For the Lord follows his preachers: because preaching goes before, and then the Lord comes to the dwelling of our heart when the words of exhortation have run ahead; and thus truth is received into the mind.

℟ Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil:

In order, then, to instruct his people, the Lord never ceased to send laborers to cultivate his vineyard, as it were: for both first through the Fathers, and afterward through the Teachers of the Law and the Prophets, and finally through the Apostles, as he cultivated the character of his people, he labored, as it were, through workers in the cultivation of the vineyard. Although, at whatever level or measure, whoever stood forth as a faithful preacher of righteous action was a worker in this vineyard. The worker at dawn, at the third, sixth, and ninth hour, represents that ancient Hebrew people: who in their chosen ones, from the very beginning of the world, while they strove to worship God with right faith, never ceased, as it were, to labor in the cultivation of the vineyard. But at the eleventh hour the Gentiles are called, to whom it is also said: Why do you stand here idle all day?

℟ Ubi est Abel frater tuus? dixit Dóminus ad Cain. Néscio, Dómine, numquid custos fratris mei sum ego? Et dixit ad eum: Quid fecísti?

℟ Where is your brother Abel? said the Lord to Cain. I do not know, O Lord, am I my brother's keeper? And he said to him: What have you done?

Ecce vox sánguinis fratris tui Abel clamat ad me de terra.

Behold, the voice of your brother Abel's blood cries out to me from the earth.

℣ Maledíctus eris super terram, quæ apéruit os suum, et suscépit sánguinem fratris tui de manu tua.

℣ Cursed shall you be upon the earth, which has opened its mouth and received your brother's blood from your hand.
