14 For the entire law is fulfilled by one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you are not consumed by one another!
16 So then, I say: Walk in the spirit, and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
17 For the flesh desires against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. And since these are against one another, you may not do whatever you want.

John of Antioch, surnamed Chrysostom on account of the golden stream of his eloquence, turned from forensic and secular studies to divine letters with the highest distinction of talent and industry. And so, having been consecrated and made a priest of the Church of Antioch, upon the death of Nectarius he was placed, against his will, over the Church of Constantinople through the agency of the Emperor Arcadius. Taking up this pastoral office, he began to rebuke more vigorously the corrupt morals and the licentiousness of the life of the nobility; and on account of this freedom he incurred the great hostility of many. He also gravely offended the Empress Eudoxia, because he had reproved her concerning the money of the widow Callitropha and the farm of another widow.

Therefore, when a council of some bishops was held at Chalcedon, which he, though summoned, refused to attend, saying it was neither a lawful nor a public council, and while Eudoxia herself was chiefly urging the cause against Chrysostom, he is driven into exile; but a little afterward, when a sedition of the people arose out of longing for him, he is recalled from exile amid the admirable acclamation of the city. Yet, since he did not cease to rebuke corrupt morals, and forbade games to be held near the silver statue of Eudoxia in the forum of Holy Sophia, by the conspiracy of his enemy bishops he is compelled to go into exile a second time, while all the widows and the poor mourned the expulsion of their common father. In exile, Chrysostom suffered incredible evils, and converted very many to faith in Jesus Christ.

But while a council had been held at Rome and he was being restored by decree of Pope Innocent I, he was afflicted along the road by soldiers guarding him with wondrous evils and calamities. And as he was being led through Armenia, the holy Martyr Basiliscus, in whose church he had previously prayed, addressed him at night in these words: Brother John, tomorrow the same place will unite us. Wherefore on the following day, having received the Sacrament of the Eucharist and fortifying himself with the sign of the cross, he gave back his soul to God on the eighteenth day before the Kalends of October. At his death, a fearful hailstorm fell upon Constantinople, and within four days the Empress departed this life. His body, accompanied by a distinguished procession and a great multitude of people, was carried to Constantinople by order of Theodosius, son of Arcadius, and honorably buried on the sixth day before the Kalends of February; and he also venerated his relics and sought pardon for his parents. Later, when the body was translated to Rome, it was laid to rest in the Vatican basilica. All men marvel at the great number, the piety, and the splendor of his sermons and other writings, as well as at his method of interpretation and the exposition of the sense of the sacred books that clings to the text; and they deem him worthy that the Apostle Paul, whom he wondrously revered, should seem to have dictated much to him as he wrote and preached. This most illustrious Doctor of the whole Church was declared and appointed heavenly patron of sacred orators by Pope Pius X.

For in saying, You are the salt of the earth, he showed that the nature of all humanity has been rendered insipid and corrupted by the force of sins; and therefore he requires of them those virtues which are especially necessary and useful for procuring the salvation of the many. Nequáquam: neque enim fíeri potest, ut ea quæ iam corrúpta sunt, salis perfricatióne reparéntur. Non ergo hoc fecérunt, sed ante renováta, sibíque trádita, atque ab illa iam putrédine liberáta, aspergébant sale, et in ea novitáte conservábant, quam a Dómino suscéperant. Liberáre quippe a putrédine peccatórum, Christi virtútis est: ut autem ad illa íterum non revertántur, Apostolórum curæ est ac labóris.

Do not think, therefore, he says, that you are to be led to trivial contests, or that you must give account of small matters. You are the salt of the earth. What then? Did they treat what was already putrefied? By no means; for it is not possible that what is already corrupted should be restored by the application of salt. Therefore they did not do this, but those who had first been renewed and delivered to them, and already freed from that putrefaction, they sprinkled with salt and preserved in that newness which they had received from the Lord.
