O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Let enduring praise and glory

1 Behold, this is the third time that I am coming to you. By the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word shall stand.
2 I have preached when present, and I will preach now while absent, to those who sinned before, and to all the others, because, when I arrive again, I will not be lenient with you.
3 Do you seek evidence that it is Christ who speaks in me, who is not weak with you, but is powerful with you?
4 For although he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by the power of God. And yes, we are weak in him. But we shall live with him by the power of God among you.

7 Now we pray to God that you shall do nothing evil, not so that we may seem to be approved, but so that you may do what is good, even if we seem like reprobates.
8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
9 For we rejoice that we are weak, while you are strong. This is also what we pray for: your perfection.

Timothy, born at Lystra in Lycaonia of a Gentile father and a Jewish mother, was observing the Christian religion when the Apostle Paul came to those parts. Paul, moved by the report that had spread concerning Timothy's holiness, took him as a companion of his journey; but on account of the Jews who had converted to Christ, knowing that Timothy's father was a Gentile, he circumcised him. When both had come to Ephesus, Timothy was ordained bishop there by the Apostle, to govern that church.

The triumphant day of the blessed Martyr N. returns to us today in its annual celebration: and as the Church rejoices in his glorification, so also she sets before us his footsteps to be followed. In his glorious contest, two things especially are to be considered by us: namely the hardened cruelty of the torturer, and the unvanquished patience of the Martyr. The cruelty of the torturer, so that we may detest it; the patience of the Martyr, so that we may imitate it. Hear the Psalmist reproving malice: Do not be emulous of those who do evil, for they shall dry up quickly like grass. But that patience must be shown in the face of those who do evil, hear the Apostle urging: Patience is necessary for you, that you may bear away the promises.

Nor are those women who vow virginity to God, even though they hold a higher degree of honor and holiness in the Church, without marriage: for they too belong to the marriage with the whole Church, in which marriage the Bridegroom is Christ.
