The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,

Fabian, a Roman, governing the Church from Maximinus until Decius, divided the regions among seven deacons to have care of the poor. He created an equal number of subdeacons to gather the acts of the Martyrs written by the seven notaries. He likewise decreed that each year on the Thursday of the Lord's Supper the Chrism should be renewed, the old being burned. Finally, on the thirteenth day before the Kalends of February, in the persecution of Decius, he was crowned with martyrdom and was buried in the cemetery of Callixtus on the Appian Way, having sat for fifteen years and four days. He held five ordinations in the month of December, in which he created twenty-two priests, seven deacons, eleven bishops in various places.

Sebastian, born of a father from Narbonne and a mother from Milan, was dear to Diocletian on account of the nobility of his lineage and his virtue. As commander of the first cohort, he assisted the Christians, whose faith he secretly practiced, with his services and resources; and those among them who seemed to fear the force of torments, he so strengthened by his encouragement that many of them freely offered themselves to the torturers for the sake of Jesus Christ. Among these were the brothers Marcus and Marcellian, who were in custody at Rome in the house of Nicostratus, whose wife Zoë recovered the voice she had lost through the prayer of Sebastian. When these matters were reported to Diocletian, he summoned Sebastian, and after rebuking him most vehemently, attempted by every art to turn him away from the faith of Christ. But when he availed nothing either by promises or by threats, he ordered him to be bound to a stake and shot through with arrows.

Whom the holy woman Irene, as everyone believed him dead, ordered to be carried off by night for burial; but finding him alive, she cared for him in her own home. And so a little later, when his health was restored, he presented himself before Diocletian and accused him of his impiety more freely. Diocletian, when he first saw him, was stunned, believing him dead; but inflamed by the novelty of the event and by Sebastian's sharp reproach, he ordered him to be beaten with rods until he gave up his soul to God. His body was cast into the sewer; but Lucina, admonished by Sebastian in a dream as to where it was and where he wished to be buried, buried it at the Catacombs, where a renowned church has been built in the name of Saint Sebastian.

Observe all things carefully: how he ascends with the Apostles and descends to the crowds. For how could the crowd see Christ except in a lowly place? It does not follow to the heights; it does not climb to the lofty. And so, where he descended, he found the sick: for the sick cannot be on the heights. Hence Matthew also teaches that the weak were healed in the lower places. For each one must first be healed, so that, as the virtues advance step by step, he may be able to ascend the mountain; and therefore he heals each one in the lower places, that is, he draws him back from lust, he turns away the injury of blindness. He descended to our wounds: so that by a certain use and abundance of his nature, he might make us sharers in the heavenly kingdom.

Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Saint Luke set down only four beatitudes of the Lord, but Saint Matthew set down eight; yet in those eight these four are contained, and in these four those eight. For here he embraced, as it were, the four cardinal virtues; there, in the eight, he unlocked the mystical number. Many psalms are inscribed for the octave; and you receive the command to give a portion to those eight beatitudes. For just as the eighth is the perfection of our hope, so the eighth is the sum of the virtues.

But let us first look at what is of greater importance. Blessed, he says, are the poor, for theirs is the Kingdom of God. Both Evangelists placed this beatitude first.
