Antony the Egyptian, born of noble and Christian parents, whom he lost in his adolescence, when he had entered the church and heard the Gospel passage: If you wish to be perfect, go and sell all that you have and give to the poor — as though these words were addressed to him — resolved that he must obey Christ the Lord in this manner. Accordingly, having sold his property, he distributed all the money to the poor. Freed from these encumbrances, he undertook to follow the form of heavenly life on earth. But when he entered upon that perilous combat, he judged that to the defense of faith with which he was armed he must add the assistance of the remaining virtues; and so great was the ardor with which he was inflamed for these virtues, that he strove to imitate whoever he saw excelling in any praiseworthy virtue.

℟ But I am a beggar and poor:

The Lord is mindful of me.

℣ For you shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; blessed are you, and it shall be well with you.

There was therefore nothing more continent than he, nothing more watchful. In patience, meekness, mercy, humility, labor, and the study of the divine Scriptures he surpassed all. He so recoiled from meeting or conversing with heretics and schismatics, above all with Arians, that he said one should not even draw near to them. He lay on the ground when necessary sleep overtook him. He observed fasting so strictly that he used only salt on his bread and quenched his thirst with water; nor did he refresh himself with food or drink before sunset, and often abstained from food for two days; very often he spent the night in prayer. When such and so great a soldier of God as Anthony had thus emerged, the enemy of the human race assailed that most holy young man with various temptations, which he overcame by fasting and prayer. Nor did frequent triumph over Satan make Anthony careless, for he knew the innumerable arts by which the devil does harm.

He therefore withdrew into the vast solitude of Egypt, where, advancing daily toward Christian perfection, he so despised the demons — whose attacks were all the fiercer the more stoutly Anthony proved himself in resistance — that he would upbraid them for their weakness; and frequently rousing his disciples to fight against the devil, and teaching them by what weapons he might be conquered, he would say: Believe me, brothers, Satan is afraid of the vigils, prayers, fasts, voluntary poverty, mercy, and humility of the devout, but above all of a burning love for Christ our Lord, by the one most holy sign of whose Cross he is weakened and flees. He was so terrible to the demons that many throughout Egypt who were tormented by them were set free by the invocation of the name of Anthony; and such was his fame for holiness that Constantine the Great and his sons commended themselves to his prayers by letter. At length, when he was in his one hundred and fifth year, having countless imitators of his way of life, he called together the monks and instructed them in the perfect rule of Christian life; and, renowned for holiness and miracles, he departed to heaven on the sixteenth day before the Kalends of February.

Homilia 1 super Missus est, n. 7-8

‘And he was subject to them.’ Who to whom? God to human beings; God, I say, to whom Angels are subject, to whom Principalities and Powers obey, was subject to Mary, and not only to Mary but also to Joseph on account of Mary. Marvel then at either, and choose which you marvel at more: either the most gracious condescension of the Son, or the most excellent dignity of the Mother. On both sides astonishment, on both sides wonder. That God should obey a woman is humility without precedent; and that a woman should command God is exaltation without equal. Among the praises of virgins it is singularly sung that they follow the Lamb wherever he goes. What praises, then, do you judge worthy of her who even goes before him?

℟ Truly you are a hidden King,

The God of Israel, the Savior.

℣ You teach knowledge to man.

Learn, O man, to obey; learn, O earth, to submit; learn, O dust, to comply. Speaking of your Creator, the Evangelist says: "And he was," he says, "subject to them" — namely, to Mary and Joseph, without doubt. Blush, O proud one made of ashes! God humbles himself, and you exalt yourself? God submits to human beings, and you, eager to dominate human beings, place yourself before your Creator? Would that God might deign to answer me when I sometimes think such a thing, as he answered his Apostle in rebuke: "Get behind me, Satan, for you do not savor the things of God." For as often as I desire to be set above human beings, so often do I contend to go before God; and then truly I do not savor the things of God. For of him it is said: "And he was subject to them." If you, O man, disdain to imitate the example of a man, surely it will not be unworthy of you to follow your Creator. If perhaps you cannot follow him wherever he goes, deign at least to follow him where he has condescended to you.

If you cannot walk the lofty path of virginity, follow at least God along the very safe way of humility; from whose rightness if any, even among virgins, shall have strayed, they do not, if I am to speak the truth, follow the Lamb whithersoever he goes. The unclean man who is humble follows the Lamb; the virgin who is proud also follows him, but neither follows him whithersoever he goes: for neither can the one ascend to the purity of the Lamb, who is without blemish; nor does the other deign to descend to the same meekness, by which he was silent before his shearer, indeed before his slayer. Yet the sinner has chosen the more wholesome part of following in humility than the proud man in virginity; for the humility of the one's repentance cleanses even his impurity, while the pride of the other defiles his chastity.
