1 Infírmum autem in fide assúmite, non in disceptatiónibus cogitatiónum.
2 Alius enim credit se manducáre ómnia: qui autem infírmus est, olus mandúcet.
3 Is qui mandúcat, non manducántem non spernat: et qui non mandúcat, manducántem non iúdicet: Deus enim illum assúmpsit.
4 Tu quis es, qui iúdicas aliénum servum? Dómino suo stat, aut cadit: stabit autem: potens est enim Deus statúere illum.
1 But accept those who are weak in faith, without disputing about ideas.
2 For one person believes that he may eat all things, but if another is weak, let him eat plants.
3 He who eats should not despise him who does not eat. And he who does not eat should not judge him who eats. For God has accepted him.
4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? He stands or falls by his own Lord. But he shall stand. For God is able to make him stand.

℣ The Magi venerated the Author of our salvation in the cradle, and from their treasures offered him mystical kinds of gifts.

As you have heard, dearest brethren, in the reading of the Gospel, when the King of heaven was born, the king of the earth was troubled; for earthly exaltation is confounded when heavenly greatness is revealed. But we must ask ourselves what it means that, when the Redeemer was born, an Angel appeared to the shepherds in Judea, while the Magi were led from the East to adore him not by an Angel but by a star. For to the Jews, as those who make use of reason, it was fitting that a rational creature, that is, an Angel, should preach; but the Gentiles, since they did not know how to make use of reason, were led to the knowledge of the Lord not by a voice but by signs. Hence it is said through Paul: Prophecies are given to the faithful, not to unbelievers; but signs are given to unbelievers, not to the faithful. For prophecies were given to the former as faithful, not as unbelievers; and signs were given to the latter as unbelievers, not as faithful.

And it is to be noted that our Redeemer, when he was now of perfect age, the Apostles proclaim him to the same Gentiles, while the star announces him as a little child, not yet speaking through the office of a human body, to the nations: because without doubt the order of reason required that the speaking Lord should become known to us through speaking preachers, and the not-yet-speaking one should be proclaimed by mute elements. But in all the signs that were shown either at the Lord's birth or at his death, we must consider how great was the hardness of heart in certain Jews, who acknowledged him neither through the gift of prophecy nor through miracles.

All the elements bore witness that their Author had come. To speak of them after a human fashion by way of examples: the heavens knew him to be God, because they immediately sent a star. The earth knew him, because when he was crucified it trembled.

96:1 The Lord has reigned, let the earth exult: * let the many islands rejoice.
96:2 Clouds and mist are all around him: * justice and judgment are corrections from his throne.
96:3 A fire will precede him, * and it will enflame his enemies all around.
96:4 His lightnings have enlightened the whole world: * the earth saw, and it was shaken.
96:5 The mountains flowed like wax before the face of the Lord: * before the face of the Lord of all the earth.
96:6 The heavens announced his justice: * and all peoples saw his glory.
96:7 May all those who adore graven images be confounded: * and those who glory in their false images.
96:7 Adore him, all you his Angels: * Zion heard, and was glad.
96:8 And the daughters of Judah exulted, * because of your judgments, O Lord:
96:9 For you are the Most High Lord over all the earth: * you are greatly exalted above all gods.
