Hymnus
Deus tuórum mílitum
Sors, et córona, prǽmium,
Laudes canéntes Mártyris
Absólve nexu críminis.
Hic nempe mundi gáudia,
Et blanda fraudum pábula
Imbúta felle députans,
Pervénit ad cæléstia.
Pœnas cucúrrit fórtiter,
Et sústulit viríliter,
Fundénsque pro te sánguinem,
Ætérna dona póssidet.
Ob hoc precátu súpplici
Te póscimus, piíssime;
In hoc triúmpho Mártyris
Dimítte noxam sérvulis.
Laus et perénnis glória
Patri sit, atque Fílio,
Sancto simul Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.
For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.
He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.
For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.
Let enduring praise and glory
be to the Father, and to the Son,
and likewise to the Holy Paraclete,
through all eternal ages.
Amen.

Nocturn 1
Ant.
Ant. In the law of the Lord * was his delight day and night.
Psalmus 1
Psalm 1
1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence:
1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.
1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time:
1:3b And its leaf will not fall away: * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.
1:4 Not so the impious, not so: * but they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just: * and the path of the impious will pass away.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalmus 2
Psalm 2
2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis iugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
2:8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
2:9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
2:11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.
2:1 Why have the Gentiles been seething: * and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
2:2 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one * against the Lord, and against his Christ:
2:3 Let us shatter their chains: * and cast their yoke away from us.
2:4 He who dwells in heaven will ridicule them: * and the Lord will mock them.
2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them with his fury.
2:6 Yet I have been appointed king by him over Zion, his holy mountain, * preaching his precepts.
2:7 The Lord has said to me: * You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
2:8 Ask of me, and I will give to you the Gentiles for your inheritance, * and the ends of the earth for your possession.
2:9 You will rule them with an iron rod, * and you will shatter them like a potter's vessel.
2:10 And now, O kings, understand: * be instructed, you who judge the earth.
2:11 Serve the Lord in fear: * and rejoice before him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.
2:13 When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time: * blessed are all who trust in him.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

3:7 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.
3:2 Lord, why have they who trouble me been multiplied? * Many rise up against me.
3:3 Many say of my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.
3:4 But you, O Lord, are my sustainer, * my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
3:5 With my voice I cried out to the Lord: * and he heard me from his holy mountain.
3:6 I slept, and took my rest: * and I arose, for the Lord sustained me.
3:7 I will not fear thousands of people surrounding me: * arise, O Lord, save me, O my God.
3:8 For you have struck all who oppose me without cause: * you have broken the teeth of sinners.

℟ And the torrents overflowed.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

De Actibus Apostolórum
From the Acts of the Apostles
Act. 6:1-6
Act. 6:1-6
1 In those days, as the number of disciples was increasing, there occurred a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, because their widows were treated with disdain in the daily ministration.
2 And so the twelve, calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: 'It is not fair for us to leave behind the Word of God to serve at tables also.'
3 Therefore, brothers, search among yourselves for seven men of good testimony, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom, whom we may appoint over this work.
4 Yet truly, we will be continually in prayer and in the ministry of the Word.
5 And the plan pleased the entire multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and with the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas, a new arrival from Antioch.
6 These they set before the sight of the Apostles, and while praying, they imposed hands on them.
℟ Stéphanus autem plenus grátia et fortitúdine,
℟ Stephen, full of grace and fortitude,
Faciébat prodígia et signa magna in pópulo.
Was performing wonders and great signs among the people.
℣ Some from the synagogue rose up to dispute with Stephen: and they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.
℟ Faciébat prodígia et signa magna in pópulo.
℟ Was performing wonders and great signs among the people.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.
Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Act. 6:7-10;7:54
Act. 6:7-10;7:54
7 And the Word of the Lord was increasing, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied exceedingly. And even a large group of the priests were obedient to the faith.
8 Then Stephen, filled with grace and fortitude, wrought great signs and miracles among the people.
9 But certain ones, from the synagogue of the so-called Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those who were from Cilicia and Asia rose up and were disputing with Stephen:
10 but they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.
54 Then, upon hearing these things, they were deeply wounded in their hearts, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
℟ Vidébant omnes Stéphanum, qui erant in concílio:
℟ All who were in the council gazed upon Stephen: *
And they beheld his face as the face of an Angel standing among them.
℣ Plenus grátia et fortitúdine, faciébat prodígia et signa magna in pópulo.
℣ Full of grace and fortitude, he worked wonders and great signs among the people.
℟ And they beheld his face as the face of an Angel standing among them.

Act. 7:55-59
Act. 7:55-59
55 But he, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and gazing intently toward heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, 'Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.'
56 Then they, crying out with a loud voice, blocked their ears and, with one accord, rushed violently toward him.
57 And driving him out, beyond the city, they stoned him. And witnesses placed their garments beside the feet of a youth, who was called Saul.
58 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out and said, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.'
59 Then, having been brought to his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord.
℟ Intuens in cælum beátus Stéphanus, vidit glóriam Dei, et ait:

Sermo sancti Fulgéntii Epíscopi
Sermon of Saint Fulgentius, Bishop
Ille, sempitérnæ Deitátis maiestáte serváta, servíle cinctórium carnis assúmens, in huius sǽculi campum pugnatúrus intrávit; iste, depósitis corruptibílibus córporis induméntis, ad cæli palátium perénniter regnatúrus ascéndit. Ille descéndit carne velátus, iste ascéndit sánguine laureátus.
Yesterday we celebrated the temporal birthday of our eternal King; today we celebrate the triumphal passion of his soldier. For yesterday our King, clothed in the robe of flesh and going forth from the chamber of the virginal womb, deigned to visit the world; today the soldier, departing from the tabernacle of the body, has migrated as a conqueror to heaven. The former, preserving the majesty of his eternal Godhead and taking on the servant's girdle of flesh, entered the field of this age to do battle; the latter, having laid aside the corruptible garments of the body, ascended to the palace of heaven to reign forever. The former descended veiled in flesh; the latter ascended crowned with blood.
℟ Lapidábant Stéphanum invocántem et dicéntem:
℟ They stoned Stephen as he called out and said:
Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit: and do not hold this sin against them.
℣ Pósitis autem génibus, clamávit voce magna, dicens.
℣ But having fallen to his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, saying.
℟ Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit: and do not hold this sin against them.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.
Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

Ascéndit iste lapidántibus Iudǽis, quia ille descéndit lætántibus Angelis. Glória in excélsis Deo, heri sancti Angeli exsultántes cantavérunt: hódie Stéphanum lætántes in suum consórtium suscepérunt.
This one ascended while the Jews were stoning him, because that One descended while the Angels were rejoicing. Glory to God in the highest — yesterday the holy Angels sang out in exultation; today they received Stephen with joy into their fellowship. Yesterday the Lord came forth from the womb of the Virgin; today the soldier went forth from the prison of the flesh. Yesterday Christ was wrapped in swaddling clothes for our sake; today Stephen was clothed by him in the robe of immortality. Yesterday the narrow confines of the manger held Christ as an infant; today the immensity of heaven received Stephen in triumph. The Lord descended alone, that he might raise up many; our King humbled himself, that he might exalt his soldiers.
℟ Impetum fecérunt unanímiter in eum, et eiecérunt eum extra civitátem, invocántem et dicéntem:
℟ They rushed upon him with one accord, and cast him out of the city, as he called upon and said:
Dómine Iesu, áccipe spíritum meum.
Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
℣ And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man whose name was Saul: and they stoned Stephen as he called upon and said.
℟ Dómine Iesu, áccipe spíritum meum.
℟ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

We must, however, brethren, acknowledge by what weapons Stephen, girded for the fray, was able to overcome the cruelty of the Jews, and thus merited to triumph in blessed victory. Stephen, therefore, in order to merit receiving the crown his name foretold, had charity as his weapons, and by it he conquered everywhere. By charity toward God he did not yield to the raging Jews; by charity toward neighbor he interceded for those who were stoning him. By charity he rebuked those who erred, that they might be corrected; by charity he prayed for those who were stoning him, that they might not be punished. Supported by the power of charity, he conquered Saul who cruelly raged; and he who had him as a persecutor on earth, he merited to have as a companion in heaven.
℟ Impii super iustum iactúram fecérunt, ut eum morti tráderent:
℟ The wicked have plotted the ruin of the just, to deliver him to death:
At ille gaudens suscépit lápides, ut mererétur accípere corónam glóriæ.
But he, rejoicing, received the stones, that he might merit to receive the crown of glory.
℣ Continuérunt aures suas, et ímpetum fecérunt unanímiter in eum.
℣ They stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord.
℟ At ille gaudens suscépit lápides, ut mererétur accípere corónam glóriæ.
℟ But he, rejoicing, received the stones, that he might merit to receive the crown of glory.

Matt 23:34-39
At that time: Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees: Behold, I send to you prophets and wisemen and scribes; and some of these you will put to death and crucify. And so forth.

Liber 4 Comment. in cap. 23 Matthæi
Liber 4 Comment. in cap.
What we said before — Fill up the measure of your fathers — can be referred, insofar as it pertains to the person of the Lord, to the fact that he was to be slain by them; but it can also be referred to his disciples, of whom he now says: Behold, I send to you prophets and wisemen and scribes. And at the same time observe, as the Apostle writes to the Corinthians, that the gifts of the disciples of Christ are various: some are prophets, who foretell things to come; others are wisemen, who know when they ought to bring forth a word; others are scribes most learned in the law — from among whom Stephen was stoned, Paul slain, Peter crucified, and the disciples in the Acts of the Apostles scourged.
℟ Stéphanus servus Dei, quem lapidábant Iudǽi, vidit cælos apértos: vidit, et introívit:
℟ Stephen, the servant of God, whom the Jews were stoning, saw the heavens opened: he saw, and entered in:
Beátus homo, cui cæli patébant.
Blessed is the man for whom the heavens stood open.
℣ Cum ígitur saxórum crepitántium túrbine quaterétur, inter æthéreos aulæ cæléstis sinus divína ei cláritas fulsit.
℣ While he was being battered by the whirlwind of crashing stones, a divine radiance shone upon him in the ethereal halls of the heavenly court.
℟ Beátus homo, cui cæli patébant.
℟ Blessed is the man for whom the heavens stood open.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

We inquire who this Zechariah, son of Barachiah, might be, since we read of many men named Zechariah. And lest a free capacity for error be granted us, it was added: "Whom you killed between the temple and the altar." In different sources we read different things, and I must set forth the opinions of each. Some say he is Zechariah the son of Barachiah, who is the eleventh of the twelve prophets, and in his case the father's name agrees; but the Scripture does not say where he was killed between the temple and the altar — especially since in his time the ruins of the temple had hardly yet come to be. Others wish Zechariah the father of John to be understood, confirming it by certain fancies from apocryphal books, that he was killed for this reason: that he had preached the coming of the Savior.
℟ The gates of heaven were opened to Christ's blessed Martyr Stephen, who was found first in the number of Martyrs:
Et ídeo triúmphat in cælis coronátus.
and therefore he triumphs in heaven, crowned.
℣ For the death which our Savior deigned to suffer for us, he was the first to render back to the Savior.
℟ Et ídeo triúmphat in cælis coronátus.
℟ and therefore he triumphs in heaven, crowned.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℟ Et ídeo triúmphat in cælis coronátus.
℟ and therefore he triumphs in heaven, crowned.

Some wish this man to be Zechariah, who was slain by King Joash of Judah between the temple and the altar, as the Book of Kings relates. But it must be noted that Zechariah is not the son of Barachiah, but the son of the priest Jehoiada; wherefore Scripture also records: Joash did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada his father had done to him. Since therefore we hold that it is Zechariah and the place of the slaying agrees, we ask: why is he said to be the son of Barachiah and not of Jehoiada? Barachiah in our language means "Blessed of the Lord," and the justice of the priest Jehoiada is indicated by the Hebrew name. In the Gospel used by the Nazarenes, instead of "son of Barachiah" we find written "son of Jehoiada."
