2 Cui respóndit múlier: De fructu lignórum, quæ sunt in paradíso, véscimur:
3 de fructu vero ligni quod est in médio paradísi, præcépit nobis Deus ne comederémus, et ne tangerémus illud, ne forte moriámur.
4 Dixit autem serpens ad mulíerem: Nequáquam morte moriémini.
5 Scit enim Deus quod in quocúmque die comedéritis ex eo, aperiéntur óculi vestri, et éritis sicut dii, sciéntes bonum et malum.

1 However, the serpent was more crafty than any of the creatures of the earth that the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Why has God instructed you, that you should not eat from every tree of Paradise?"
2 The woman responded to him: "From the fruit of the trees which are in Paradise, we eat."
3 Yet truly, from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of Paradise, God has instructed us that we should not eat, and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we may die."
4 Then the serpent said to the woman: "By no means will you die a death."
5 For God knows that, on whatever day you will eat from it, your eyes will be opened; and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil."

7 And the eyes of them both were opened. And when they realized themselves to be naked, they joined together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.
8 And when they had heard the voice of the Lord God taking a walk in Paradise in the afternoon breeze, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God in the midst of the trees of Paradise.

From ancient times, bishops of holy things, ecclesiastical men, religious orders, and even emperors and kings urgently entreated this Apostolic See that the Immaculate Conception of the most holy Mother of God might be defined as a dogma of the Catholic faith. These petitions were repeated in our own age as well, and were presented most especially to our predecessor of happy memory, Gregory XVI, and to us ourselves, both by bishops and by the secular clergy, by religious families, by sovereign princes, and by the faithful peoples. And so, knowing and considering all these things with singular joy of soul, we had scarcely been raised, though unworthy, by the hidden counsel of divine providence to this sublime Chair of Peter, and had undertaken the governance of the whole Church, when we made nothing more our care than, by virtue of our supreme veneration, piety, and affection for the most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God — cherished from our earliest years — to accomplish all that could still remain in the desires of the Church, so that the honor of the most blessed Virgin might be increased and her prerogatives might shine forth in a fuller light.

O blessed Virgin, pure dove and heavenly spouse, Mary, heaven, temple, and throne of the divinity, who have Christ, the sun blazing in heaven and on earth! A bright cloud, who brought down Christ, the most brilliant lightning from heaven, to enlighten the world. The Virgin is the unspotted lily who brought forth Christ, the unfading rose. O holy Mother of God, the immaculate ewe who bore the Lamb Christ, the Word incarnate from you! O most holy Virgin, who struck the armies of Angels into wonder! Wonderful is the miracle in the heavens — a woman clothed with the sun, bearing the Light in her arms; wonderful is the miracle in the heavens — the bridal chamber of the Virgin possessing the Son of God; wonderful is the miracle in the heavens — the Lord of Angels became an infant of the Virgin. The Angels accused Eve; but now they honor Mary with glory, she who raised up the fallen Eve and sent Adam, cast out from paradise, to the heavens. For she is the mediatrix of heaven and earth, who accomplished the union by nature.

Tried by serious illness, and having endured it most patiently for four months, he at last recovered and began to deliberate about taking up the religious life. To prepare the way, he rented a small dwelling on the outskirts of the city; and when he had shut himself away in it, he lived a most austere life in every respect, praying to God without ceasing that he might show him what he ought to follow. By divine providence it came about that he preferred above all others the Order of the blessed Francis, in which he excelled in humility, patience, and the other virtues of a religious. When the rector of the monastery observed this, and had already formed a clear judgment of his learning in doctrine and sacred letters, he imposed upon him the duty of preaching: which he undertook most humbly, and when he recognized himself to be insufficiently fitted for it on account of the weakness and hoarseness of his voice, he implored the help of God and was freed from this impediment, not without a miracle.
