7 You offer polluted bread upon my altar, and you say: In what way have we polluted you? In that you say: The table of the Lord has been despised.

℟ Angústiæ mihi sunt úndique, et quid éligam ignóro;

℟ Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

8 If you offer the blind for sacrifice, is this not evil? And if you offer the lame and the sick, is this not evil? Offer it to your leader, if he will be pleased with it, or if he will accept your face, says the Lord of hosts.
9 And now, beseech the face of God, so that he may have mercy on you—for by your hand has this been done—if in any way he might accept your faces, says the Lord of hosts.
10 Who is there among you that would close the doors and enflame my altar without pay? I have no favor in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept a gift from your hand;
11 for from the rising of the sun even to its setting, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place a clean oblation is sacrificed and offered to my name, for my name is great among the Gentiles, says the Lord of hosts.

Adoléscens paréntibus orbatus, facultates suas paupéribus distríbuit. Cuius illud insigne est christianæ benignitátis exemplum, quod cum eius civis egens tres filias iam nubiles in matrimonio collocare non posset, earumque pudicítiam prostitúere cogitaret; re cognita, Nicolaus noctu per fenestram tantum pecuniæ in eius domum iniecit, quantum uníus vírginis doti satis esset: quod cum íterum et tertio fecísset, tres illæ vírgines honestis viris in matrimónium datæ sunt.

Nicholas, born of illustrious parents at Patara in Lycia, was obtained from God by their prayers. How great the holiness of this man would be was already apparent from his cradle. For as an infant, while on other days he frequently took the milk of his nurse, on the fourth and sixth day of the week he sucked only once, and that in the evening — a custom of fasting which he always maintained throughout the rest of his life. As a young man, bereaved of his parents, he distributed his wealth to the poor. Notable is that example of Christian generosity by which, when a fellow citizen in need was unable to provide dowries for his three marriageable daughters and was thinking of prostituting their virtue, Nicholas, learning of it, by night cast through a window into his house a sum of money sufficient for the dowry of one of the virgins; and having done this a second and a third time, all three virgins were given in marriage to honorable men.

When he had given himself wholly to God, he set out for Palestine, to visit the holy places and venerate them in person. On this journey, embarking on a ship under a serene sky and calm sea, he foretold a terrible storm to the sailors; and when it arose while all were in the greatest danger, by his prayers he miraculously stilled it. Thereupon, returning home and giving to all examples of singular holiness, at God's prompting he came to Myra, which was the metropolis of Lycia; at which time the bishop of that city had died, and the provincial bishops were deliberating about the choice of a successor. And so in that deliberation they were divinely instructed to choose the man who would first enter the church on the following morning, by the name of Nicholas. This rule having been applied, Nicholas was found at the door of the church, and with the unanimous consent of all he was made Bishop of Myra. In the episcopate he perpetually observed the chastity which he had always cultivated, dignity, assiduity of prayer, vigils, abstinence, generosity and hospitality, mildness in exhortation, severity in correction.

He was never lacking to widows and orphans in money, counsel, and labor; he relieved the oppressed so greatly that he even freed three tribunes who had been condemned unjustly by the Emperor Constantine, and who, on account of the fame of his miracles, had commended themselves to his prayers while he was still alive and far away — appearing to the emperor and terrifying him with threats. And when he was preaching the truth of the Christian faith at Myra against the edict of Diocletian and Maximian, he was seized by the agents of the emperors and led very far away, cast into prison, where he remained until the Emperor Constantine, by whose command he was freed from custody and returned to Myra. He quickly betook himself to the Nicene council, where together with those three hundred and eighteen Fathers he condemned the Arian heresy. Returning thence to his episcopate, not long after, as death drew near, looking up to heaven and beholding the Angels coming to meet him, he pronounced that Psalm, In you, O Lord, have I hoped, as far as the verse, Into your hands I commend my spirit; and so he departed to the heavenly homeland. His body, translated to Bari in Apulia, is there venerated with the greatest solemnity and devotion.

Dóminus ac Redémptor noster parátos nos inveníre desíderans, senescéntem mundum quæ mala sequántur denúntiat, ut nos ab eius amóre compéscat. Appropinquántem eius términum quantæ percussiónes prævéniant, innotéscit: ut, si Deum metúere in tranquillitáte nólumus, saltem vicínum eius iudícium vel percussiónibus attríti timeámus.

Our Lord and Redeemer, desiring to find us prepared, foretells the evils that will follow upon the aging world, so that he may restrain us from love of it. He makes known how great are the calamities that precede its approaching end: so that, if we are unwilling to fear God in tranquility, we may at least fear his judgment drawing near, worn down as we are by afflictions.

℟ Ecce virgo concípiet, et páriet fílium, dicit Dóminus:

℟ Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, says the Lord:

Et vocábitur nomen eius Admirábilis, Deus, Fortis.

And his name shall be called Wonderful, God, the Mighty One.

For a little earlier in this same reading of the holy Gospel which your fraternity has just now heard, the Lord had prefaced it by saying: Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be great earthquakes in divers places, and pestilences and famines. And after inserting certain things, he added what you have just now heard: There will be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves. Of all these things we certainly see that some have already come to pass, while others we dread as near at hand.

For we see already more clearly in our own times, than we read in books, nation rising against nation, and the pressure of these calamities bearing upon the lands. You know how often we have heard, from other parts of the world, that earthquakes have overwhelmed countless cities. We suffer pestilences without ceasing. As for signs in the sun and moon and stars, we have not yet clearly seen them; but from the very change in the atmosphere we already gather that they are not far off.
