O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Let enduring praise and glory
be to the Father, and to the Son,

1 Et duxit me ad portam, quæ respiciébat ad viam Orientalem,
2 et ecce glória Dei Israël ingrediebátur per viam Orientalem, et vox erat ei quasi vox aquárum multárum, et terra splendébat a maiestate eius.
3 Et vidi visiónem secúndum spéciem quam víderam, quando venit ut dispérderet civitátem, et spécies secúndum aspéctum quem videram iuxta fluvium Chobar, et cécidi super fáciem meam.
4 Et máiestas Dómini ingréssa est templum per viam portæ, quæ respiciébat ad Oriéntem;
5 et elevávit me spíritus et introduxit me in atrium interius, et ecce repléta erat glória Dómini domus.

1 And he led me to the gate which looked toward the way of the east.
2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel entered along the way of the east. And his voice was like the voice of many waters. And the earth was resplendent before his majesty.
3 And I saw a vision in accord with the form that I had seen when he arrived so that he might destroy the city. And the form was in accord with the sight that I had seen beside the river Chebar. And I fell upon my face.
4 And the majesty of the Lord advanced into the temple, along the way of the gate which looked toward the east.
5 And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court. And behold, the house was filled with the glory of the Lord.

℟ Super muros tuos, Ierúsalem, constítui custódes;

℟ Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen;

7 said to me: 'Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the steps of my feet, is where I live: in the midst of the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel, they and their kings, shall no longer defile my holy name by their fornications, and by the ruinous ways of their kings, and by exalted places.
8 They have fabricated their threshold beside my threshold, and their doorposts beside my doorposts. And there was a wall between me and them. And they defiled my holy name by the abominations which they committed. Because of this, I consumed them in my wrath.'

℟ Encircle us, O Lord, with your impregnable wall, and protect us always with the arms of your power:

Reveal to them the form and the fabrication of the house, its exits and entrances, and its entire description, and all of its precepts, and its entire order, and all of its laws. And you shall write in their sight, so that they may observe its entire description and its precepts, and so that they may accomplish them.

℟ Sustinúimus pacem, et non venit: quæsívimus bona, et ecce turbátio: cognóvimus, Dómine, peccáta nostra;

℟ We waited for peace, and it did not come; we sought good things, and behold trouble: we acknowledge, O Lord, our sins;

Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.

Do not forget us forever.

Josaphat Kuntsevych was born to noble and Catholic parents at Vladimir in Volhynia; when as a small boy he heard his mother speaking of the Passion of Christ, a dart having been sent forth from the side of an image of Jesus crucified, he received a wound in his heart. Inflamed with love of God, he began to apply himself so ardently to prayer and other devout works that he was an example and wonder to those older than himself. At the age of twenty, having made his monastic profession among the disciples of Saint Basil, the advances he made in evangelical perfection were extraordinary. He went barefoot even in the bitterest winter cold of that region; he never ate meat, used wine only out of obedience, and afflicted his body with the harshest hairshirt until his death. He preserved inviolate the flower of chastity which from his youth he had vowed to the Virgin Mother of God. The fame of his virtue and learning spread so quickly that, although young, he was set over the monastery of Bytonia, then appointed archimandrite of Vilnius, and finally, though reluctant, was proclaimed archbishop of Polotsk, to the rejoicing of Catholics.

Raised to this dignity, he yielded nothing of his former manner of life, and had at heart nothing but the divine worship and the salvation of the sheep entrusted to him. A strenuous champion of Catholic unity and truth, he labored with all his strength to bring back schismatics and heretics to communion with the See of blessed Peter. He never ceased to defend the Supreme Pontiff and the fullness of his power from the most shameless calumnies and errors of the impious, both by sermons and by writings full of piety and learning. He vindicated episcopal jurisdiction and the goods of the Church from usurpation by laymen. It is incredible how many heretics he recalled to the bosom of mother Church. Indeed, pontifical documents expressly testify that Josaphat was the most eminent promoter of the union of the Greek Church with the Latin. Beyond this, he willingly expended the revenues of his table on restoring the beauty of the house of God, on building houses for consecrated virgins, and on assisting other pious works. So open-handed toward the poor was he that once, when nothing was at hand to relieve a certain widow's need, he ordered his episcopal pallium, that is, his omophorion, to be pledged.

For this is the difference between a shepherd and a hireling: the one, disregarding the sheep, cares only for himself; the other, disregarding himself, always watches over the safety of the sheep. Therefore, having set forth the example of the shepherd, he mentions two deceivers: the thief who slaughters and plunders the sheep, and the hireling who permits the wolf and does not defend those entrusted to him.

Idem et Paulus aliis verbis significat: Omnes quæ sua sunt, quærunt, non quæ Iesu Christi.

This is what Ezekiel in former times rebuked with these words: Woe to the shepherds of Israel: were they not feeding themselves? Are not flocks fed by shepherds? But they were doing the contrary, which is a form of the greatest wickedness and the cause of very many evils. For this reason he says: Neither did they bring back what was cast away, nor did they seek what was lost, nor did they bind up what was broken, nor did they strengthen what was sick: for they fed themselves, not the flock. Paul also says the same thing in other words: All seek what is their own, not what is of Jesus Christ.

Nam cum Iudæi ipsum interimere vellent non propterea destitit a doctrina, neque credentes tradidit, sed perstitit, et pertulit mortem: ideo frequenter inquit: Ego sum pastor bonus. Quæ cum nullo niti testimonio viderentur (quod enim poneret animam suam, non multo post re demonstratum est; quod autem vitam haberent et abundantius haberent, eventurum erat in futuro sæculo) alterum ab altero confirmat.

Christ showed himself to be at variance with both: from those who come to the destruction of others, inasmuch as he says that he came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly; and from those who neglected to rescue the sheep from wolves, in that he says he lays down his life for them, lest the sheep perish. For when the Jews sought to kill him, he did not on that account cease from teaching, nor did he deliver up those who believed, but he persisted and endured death; and therefore he said repeatedly: I am the good shepherd. When these things seemed to rest on no evidence — for the fact that he would lay down his soul was demonstrated shortly after by the event; but that they might have life and have it more abundantly was to come about in the world to come — he confirms the one by the other.
