2 et dices: Quare mater tua leǽna inter leónes cubávit? in médio leunculórum enutrívit cátulos suos?
3 Et edúxit unum de leúnculis suis, et leo factus est: et dídicit cápere prædam, hominémque comédere.
4 Et audiérunt de eo gentes: et non absque vulnéribus suis cepérunt eum, et adduxérunt eum in caténis in terram Ægýpti.
5 Quæ cum vidísset quóniam infirmáta est, et périit exspectátio eius, tulit unum de leúnculis suis, leónem constítuit eum,
6 qui incedébat inter leónes, et factus est leo: et dídicit prædam cápere et hómines devoráre,
7 dídicit víduas fácere, et civitátes eórum in desértum addúcere: et desoláta est terra et plenitúdo eius a voce rugítus illíus.

1 And as for you, take up a lament over the leaders of Israel,
2 and you shall say: Why did your mother, the lioness, recline among the male lions, and raise her little ones in the midst of young lions?
3 And she led away one of her little ones, and he became a lion. And he learned to seize prey and to consume men.
4 And the Gentiles heard about him, and they seized him, but not without receiving wounds. And they led him away in chains to the land of Egypt.
5 Then, when she had seen that she was weakened, and that her hope had perished, she took one of her little ones, and appointed him as a lion.
6 And he advanced among the lions, and he became a lion. And he learned to seize prey and to devour men.
7 He learned to make widows, and to lead their citizens into the desert. And the land, with its plenitude, was made desolate by the voice of his roaring.

℟ A people worthy of praise,

whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying: You are the work of my hands, Israel my inheritance.

℣ Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people chosen as his inheritance.

8 And the Gentiles came together against him, on every side, from the provinces, and they spread their net over him; by their wounds, he was captured.
9 And they put him into a cage; they led him in chains to the king of Babylon. And they cast him into a prison, so that his voice would no longer be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
10 Your mother is like a vine, in your blood, planted by the water; her fruit and her branches have increased because of many waters.
11 And her strong branches were made into scepters for the rulers, and her stature was exalted among the branches. And she saw her own loftiness among the multitude of her branches.

℟ Angústiæ mihi sunt úndique, et quid éligam ignóro;

℟ Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;

Mélius est mihi incídere in manus hóminum, quam derelínquere legem Dei mei.

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

℣ Si enim hoc égero, mors mihi est; si autem non égero, non effúgiam manus vestras.

℣ For if I do this, death awaits me; but if I do not do it, I shall not escape your hands.

℟ Mélius est mihi incídere in manus hóminum, quam derelínquere legem Dei mei.

℟ It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

14 et egréssus est ignis de virga ramórum eius, qui fructum eius comédit, et non fuit in ea virga fortis, sceptrum dominántium. Planctus est, et erit in planctum.

12 But she was uprooted in wrath, and cast upon the ground. And the burning wind dried up her fruit. Her robust branches withered and were dried up. A fire consumed her.
13 And now she has been transplanted into the desert, into a land impassable and dry.
14 And a fire has gone forth from a rod of her branches, which has consumed her fruit. And there is no strong branch in her to become a scepter for the rulers. This is a lamentation, and it shall be a lamentation.

℟ Misit Dóminus Angelum suum et conclúsit ora leónum,

℟ The Lord sent his Angel and shut the mouths of the lions,

Et non contaminavérunt, quia coram eo iniustítia invénta non est in me.

and they did not defile me, because before him no iniquity was found in me.

℣ Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam: ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.

℣ God sent his mercy and his truth: he rescued my soul from the midst of lion cubs.

Who, settled in a foreign land, would not hasten to return to his homeland? Who, eager to sail homeward, would not more ardently long for a favoring wind, so as swiftly to embrace those dear to him?

There is the glorious chorus of the Apostles, there is the exultant company of the Prophets, there is the innumerable people of the Martyrs, crowned for the victory of their struggle and Passion. There, triumphant Virgins, who subdued the concupiscence of the flesh and body by the strength of continence. The merciful are rewarded there, who by food and generous gifts to the poor performed works of justice, who, keeping the Lord's precepts, transferred their earthly patrimony to heavenly treasuries. Let us hasten to these, dearly beloved brethren, with eager desire, and let us wish to be with them soon, so that it may be our lot to come soon to Christ.

For it is not fruitful to endure these things, but to endure them for the name of Christ not only with equanimity but even with exultation. For many heretics, deceiving souls under the name of Christianity, suffer many such things; but they are therefore excluded from this reward, because it is not said simply: Blessed are those who suffer persecution, but it is added: For the sake of righteousness. But where there is no sound faith, there can be no righteousness; for the righteous man lives by faith. Nor should schismatics promise themselves anything from this reward; for likewise, where there is no charity, there can be no righteousness. For love of neighbor works no evil; which if they possessed, they would not tear apart the Body of Christ, which is the Church.
