1 Sapiéntiam ómnium antiquórum exquíret sápiens, et in prophétis vacábit.
2 Narratiónem virórum nominatórum conservábit, et in versútias parabolárum simul introíbit.
3 Occúlta proverbiórum exquíret, et in abscónditis parabolárum conversábitur.
4 In médio magnatórum ministrábit, et in conspéctu prǽsidis apparébit.
5 In terram alienigenárum géntium pertránsiet; bona enim et mala in homínibus tentábit.

1 A wise man will seek the wisdom of all the ancients, and he will be occupied in the prophets.
2 He will preserve the words of renowned men, and he will enter with them into the subtleties of parables.
3 He will search for the hidden meanings of proverbs, and he will become familiar with the mysteries of parables.
4 He will minister in the midst of great men, and he will appear in the sight of the foremost leader.
5 He will pass through the land of foreign nations. For he will test good and evil among men.

℟ Nos álium Deum nescímus præter Dóminum, in quo sperámus:

℟ We know no other God besides the Lord, in whom we hope:

Qui non déspicit nos, nec ámovet salútem suam a génere nostro.

Who does not despise us, nor does he remove his salvation from our race.

As to an oracle, from all parts of the world, questions of sacred Scripture to be explained were referred to him. Pope Damasus, and Saint Augustine himself, frequently consulted him on the most difficult passages of Scripture, on account of his singular learning and his knowledge not only of Latin and Greek but also of Hebrew and Chaldean; and because, by the testimony of that same Augustine, he had read almost all authors. He assailed heretics with the sharpest writings; he always took under his protection the cause of the devout and Catholic. He translated the Old Testament from the Hebrew; at the command of Damasus, he rendered the New Testament according to the Greek truth, and in great part explained it as well. He also translated into Latin many writings of learned men, and himself with other monuments of his own genius illumined Christian learning. He, having reached the most advanced old age, illustrious in holiness and learning, under the Emperor Honorius, passed into heaven. His body, buried at Bethlehem, was afterwards transferred to Rome to the basilica of Saint Mary at the Crib.

Sal appellántur Apóstoli et Doctores; quia per illos univérsum hóminum condítur genus. Quod si sal evanúerit, in quo saliétur? Si doctor erraverit, a quo alio doctore emendábitur? Ad níhilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittátur foras, et conculcétur ab homínibus. Exemplum de agricultura sumptum est. Sal étenim, sicut in cibórum condiméntum et ad siccandas carnes necessárium est, ita alium usum non habet. Certe légimus in Scripturis urbes quasdam, ira victórum, sale seminátas, ut nullum in ipsis germen orirétur.

The Apostles and Doctors are called salt, because through them the whole human race is seasoned. But if the salt should lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? If a doctor should go astray, by what other doctor shall he be corrected? It is good for nothing any more, but to be cast out and trodden underfoot by men. The example is taken from agriculture. For salt, just as it is necessary for the seasoning of food and for the drying of meats, has no other use. Indeed we read in the Scriptures that certain cities, through the wrath of the conquerors, were sown with salt, so that no seed should spring up in them.
