1 Sum quidem et ego mortális homo, símilis ómnibus, et ex génere terréni illíus, qui prior factus est, et in ventre matris figurátus sum caro,
2 decem ménsium témpore coagulátus sum in sánguine: ex sémine hóminis et delectaménto somni conveniénte;
3 et ego natus accépi commúnem áërem et in simíliter factam décidi terram et primam vocem símilem ómnibus emísi plorans;
4 in involuméntis nutrítus sum, et curis magnis.
5 Nemo enim ex régibus áliud hábuit nativitátis inítium:
6 unus ergo intróitus est ómnibus ad vitam, et símilis éxitus.

1 Certainly, I myself am also a mortal man, like everyone, and the offspring of this earth, which was made beforehand; and in my mother's womb I was fashioned with care,
2 within the time of ten months, made of blood, from the seed of man and the delight of sleeping together.
3 And when I was born, I drew in the common air, and in similar fashion, I fell upon the earth, and the first voice I uttered, like everyone, was crying.
4 I was nursed in swaddling clothes and with great care.
5 For none of the kings had any other beginning of birth.
6 Therefore, there is only one entrance for everyone into life, and the same in leaving.

℟ For your judgments are great, O Lord, and your words are beyond telling:

Bernard, born in Fontaines in Burgundy of an honorable family, was as a young man most vehemently solicited by women on account of his outstanding beauty, yet could never be moved from his resolve to preserve chastity. To flee these temptations of the devil, at the age of twenty-two he resolved to enter the monastery of Cîteaux, where this order began and which was then flourishing in holiness. When Bernard's purpose became known, his brothers most earnestly endeavored to deter him from it; in which he himself proved more eloquent and successful. For he so brought them and many others to his own mind that thirty young men embraced the same religious life together with him. As a monk he was so given to fasting that whenever food was to be taken, he seemed to be undergoing a torment. He also exercised himself wonderfully in vigils and prayers; and, cherishing Christian poverty, he led as it were a heavenly life on earth, removed from all care for and desire of transitory things.

Having become Abbot of Clairvaux, he built monasteries in many places, in which the noble rule and discipline of Bernard long flourished. At Rome, over the monastery of Saints Vincent and Anastasius, restored by Pope Innocent the Second, he set as abbot the man who afterward was Supreme Pontiff Eugene the Third, to whom he also sent his book On Consideration.

He wrote much besides, in which it appears that he was furnished with learning divinely bestowed rather than acquired by labor. Sought out with the highest praise of virtue by the greatest princes for the settling of their disputes, he declined such arbitrations and devoted himself entirely to God. He was added to the number of the Saints by Gregory IX.

Our Lord and Savior, dearest brethren, admonishes us sometimes by words and sometimes by deeds. His very acts are precepts: for what he does in silence reveals what we ought to do. Behold, he sends the disciples forth in pairs to preach; for there are two commandments of charity, namely, the love of God and the love of neighbor; and charity cannot exist between fewer than two. For no one is said properly to have charity toward himself alone: but love reaches out to another, so that it may be charity.

Behold, the Lord sends out his disciples two by two to preach: that by this he may silently indicate to us that whoever has no charity toward another ought by no means to take up the office of preaching. And it is well said that he sent them before his face into every town and place where he himself was about to come. For the Lord follows his preachers: because preaching goes before, and then the Lord comes to the dwelling of our heart when the words of exhortation have run ahead; and thus truth is received into the mind.

He ascends above the west, for he trampled down by rising again the death which he had endured. We therefore make a way for him who ascends above the west, when we proclaim his glory to your minds, so that he himself, coming after, may illuminate them by the presence of his love.
