1 Fili mi, ne obliviscáris legis meæ, et præcépta mea cor tuum custódiat;

3 Misericórdia et véritas te non déserant: circúmda eas gútturi tuo et descríbe in tábulis cordis tui,
4 et invénies grátiam et disciplínam bonam coram Deo et homínibus.
5 Habe fidúciam in Dómino ex toto corde tuo et ne innitáris prudéntiæ tuæ;
6 in ómnibus viis tuis cógita illum, et ipse díriget gressus tuos.

1 My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart guard my precepts.
2 For they shall set before you length of days, and years of life, and peace.
3 Let not mercy and truth abandon you: encircle them around your throat, and inscribe them on the tablets of your heart.
4 And so shall you discover grace and good discipline, in the sight of God and men.
5 Have confidence in the Lord with all your heart, and do not depend upon your own prudence.
6 In all your ways, consider him, and he himself will direct your steps.

11 My son, do not discard the discipline of the Lord, and do not fall away when you are corrected by him;

14 Her acquisition is better than trading in silver, and her fruit is better than the first and purest gold;
15 she is more precious than all riches, and all that can be desired cannot prevail in comparison to her.

17:17 He sent from on high, and he accepted me: * and he took me up out of many waters.
17:18 He rescued me from my strongest enemies, † and from those who hated me: * for they had been too strong for me.
17:19 They intercepted me in the day of my affliction: * and the Lord became my protector.
17:20 And he led me out into a wide place: * he accomplished my salvation, because he willed me.
17:21 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice: * and he will repay me according to the purity of my hands:
17:22 For I have preserved the ways of the Lord, * and I have not behaved impiously before my God.
17:23 For all his judgments are in my sight: * and his justice I have not pushed away from me.
17:24 And I will be immaculate together with him: * and I will keep myself from my iniquity.
17:25 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice: * and according to the purity of my hands before his eyes.
17:26 With the holy, you will be holy, * and with the innocent, you will be innocent:
17:27 And with the elect, you will be elect: * and with the perverse, you will be perverse.
17:28 For you will save the humble people: * and you will bring down the eyes of the arrogant.
17:29 For you illuminate my lamp, O Lord: * my God, enlighten my darkness.
17:30 For in you, I will be delivered from temptation: * and with my God, I will climb over a wall.
17:31 As for my God, his way is undefiled: † the eloquence of the Lord has been examined by fire: * he is the protector of all who hope in him.
17:32 For who is God, except the Lord? * and who is God, except our God?
17:33 It is God who has wrapped me with virtue: * and made my way immaculate.
17:34 It is he who has perfected my feet like the feet of deer, * and who stations me upon the heights.
17:35 It is he who trains my hands for battle: * and you have set my arms like a bow of brass.

17:36a And you have given me the protection of your salvation: * and your right hand sustains me:
17:36b And your discipline has corrected me unto the end: * and your discipline itself will teach me.
17:37 You have expanded my footsteps under me: * and my tracks have not been weakened:
17:38 I will pursue my enemies and apprehend them: * and I will not turn back until they have failed.
17:39 I will break them, and they will not be able to stand: * they will fall under my feet.
17:40 And you have wrapped me with virtue for the battle: * and those rising up against me, you have subdued under me.
17:41 And you have given the back of my enemies to me, * and you have destroyed those who hated me.
17:42 They cried out, but there was none to save them, to the Lord: * but he did not heed them.
17:43 And I will crush them into dust before the face of the wind: * so that I will obliterate them like the mud in the streets.
17:44 You will rescue me from the contradictions of the people: * you will set me at the head of the Gentiles.
17:45 A people I did not know has served me: * as soon as their ears heard, they were obedient to me.
17:46 The sons of foreigners have been deceitful to me, * the sons of foreigners have grown weak with time, and they have wavered from their paths.
17:47 The Lord lives, and blessed is my God: * and may the God of my salvation be exalted.
17:48 O God, who vindicates me and who subdues the people under me: * my liberator from my enraged enemies.
17:49 And you will exalt me above those who rise up against me: * from the iniquitous man, you will rescue me.
17:50 Because of this, I will confess to you among the nations, O Lord: * and I will compose a psalm to your name:
17:51 Magnifying the salvation of his king, † and showing mercy to David, his Christ: * and to his offspring, even for all time.

Dominicus, Calarógæ in Hispánia ex nobili Gusmanórum família natus, Paléntiæ liberálibus disciplinis et theologíæ operam dedit; quo in studio cum plurimum profecísset, prius Oxoménsis ecclésiæ canonicus regularis, deínde ordinis fratrum Prædicatórum auctor fuit. Huius mater grávida sibi visa est, in quiete, continére in alvo cátulum ore præferentem facem, qua, éditus in lucem, orbem terrárum incenderet. Quo somnio significabátur fore ut, splendore sanctitátis ac doctrinæ, gentes ad christianam pietátem inflammaréntur. Veritátem éxitus comprobávit; id enim et præstitit per se, et per sui ordinis socios deinceps est consecutus.

Dominic, born at Caleruega in Spain from the noble family of the Guzmans, devoted himself at Palencia to the liberal arts and theology; and when he had made great progress in that study, he became first a canon regular of the church of Osma, and afterward the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers. His mother, while pregnant, dreamed that she bore in her womb a dog carrying a torch in its mouth, which, when brought forth into the light, set the whole world on fire. By this dream it was signified that he would set nations alight with the splendor of his holiness and learning to kindle Christian piety. The event confirmed the truth of it; for he achieved this himself, and afterwards through his companions in the order.

His genius and virtue shone forth most of all in overthrowing the heretics who were striving to corrupt the people of Toulouse with pernicious errors; in this endeavor he spent seven years. Afterward he came to Rome to the Lateran Council with the Bishop of Toulouse, in order that the order he had founded might be confirmed by Innocent III. While this matter was under deliberation, Dominic, at the Pope's urging, returned to his own people to choose a rule for himself. Returning to Rome, he obtained from Honorius III, who had succeeded Innocent, confirmation of the Order of Preachers. At Rome he established two monasteries, one for men and one for women. He also raised three dead persons to life, and performed many other miracles, by which the Order of Preachers began to spread marvelously.

But while his works were already building monasteries throughout the whole world and countless men were embracing a religious and devout way of life, he fell ill of a fever at Bologna in the year of Christ one thousand two hundred and twenty-one. Understanding from this that he was about to die, he summoned the brothers and pupils of his school and exhorted them to innocence and integrity. Finally, he left them charity, humility, and poverty as a sure inheritance by way of testament; and as the brothers prayed, with the words, Come to his aid, O Saints of God; hasten forth, O Angels, on his lips, he fell asleep in the Lord on the eighth day before the Ides of August. Pope Gregory IX afterward enrolled him in the number of the Saints.

If the steward of iniquitous mammon is praised by the voice of his lord, because he prepared justice for himself out of an iniquitous thing; and the lord, though he suffered losses, praises the steward's prudence, because he acted fraudulently against his lord but prudently for himself — how much more will Christ, who can sustain no harm and is inclined toward clemency, praise his disciples, if they shall have been merciful toward those who are to believe in him?

Then, after the parable, he added: And I say to you, make for yourselves friends from dishonest wealth. Now mammon is not the Hebrew but the Syriac word for riches, because they are collected from injustice. If, then, injustice wisely administered is turned to justice, how much more will the divine word — in which there is no injustice, which was also entrusted to the Apostles — if it is well administered, lift its administrators into heaven?
