This Confessor of the Lord, whom the peoples

By whose outstanding merit, frequently,

1 Tunc congregáti sunt omnes maióres natu Israël cum princípibus tríbuum et duces familiárum filiórum Israël ad regem Salomónem in Ierúsalem, ut deférrent arcam fœ́deris Dómini de civitáte David, id est de Sion.

51 And Solomon perfected all the work that he was doing in the house of the Lord. And he brought in the things that his father David had sanctified: the silver, and the gold, and the vessels. And he stored these in the treasuries of the house of the Lord.
1 Then all those greater by birth of Israel, with the leaders of the tribes and the rulers of the families of the sons of Israel, gathered together before king Solomon at Jerusalem, so that they might carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, from the city of David, that is, from Zion.
2 And all of Israel assembled before king Solomon, on the solemn day in the month of Ethanim, which is the seventh month.

5 Then king Solomon, and the entire multitude of Israel, who had assembled before him, advanced with him before the ark. And they immolated sheep and oxen, which could not be numbered or estimated.
6 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the oracle of the temple, in the Holy of Holies, under the wings of the cherubim.
7 For indeed, the cherubim extended their wings over the place of the ark, and they protected the ark and its bars from above.
℟ Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo:
℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:

9 Now inside the ark, there was nothing other than the two tablets of stone, which Moses had placed in it at Horeb, when the Lord formed a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they departed from the land of Egypt.
10 Then it happened that, when the priests had exited from the Sanctuary, a cloud filled the house of the Lord.
11 And the priests were unable to stand and minister, because of the cloud. For the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.

Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, born of noble parents at Naples, gave from his earliest age unmistakable signs of holiness. When his parents, while he was still an infant, brought him to Saint Francis de Girolamo of the Society of Jesus, the latter, having prayed over him, declared that he would live to the age of ninety, would be raised to episcopal dignity, and would be of the greatest benefit to the Church. From his very boyhood, averse to games, he drew noble young men to Christian modesty by word and example. As a youth, having enrolled in pious confraternities, he delighted in serving the sick in public hospitals, in devoting himself to unceasing prayer in churches, and in frequenting the sacred mysteries. He so joined devotion to literary studies that, scarcely sixteen years of age, he obtained the doctorate of both laws at his native university. Obeying his father, he undertook the advocacy of cases; and though he had gained great praise in that function, yet having experienced the dangers of the forum, he voluntarily gave up that manner of life. Having therefore spurned the distinguished marriage proposed to him by his father, having renounced the ancestral right of primogeniture, and having hung his sword at the altar of Our Lady of Mercy, he dedicated himself to the divine ministries. Ordained a priest, he rushed with such zeal against vices that, fulfilling the apostolic duty and flying hither and thither, he accomplished the conversion of great numbers of lost souls. Having taken pity especially on the poor and country folk, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, who, following the Redeemer himself, might evangelize the poor through fields, villages, and hamlets.

But lest he should ever turn aside from his purpose, he bound himself by a perpetual vow to waste no moment of time. Inflamed from this by zeal for souls, he strove to win souls for Christ and lead them to a more perfect life, both by the preaching of the divine word and by writings filled with sacred learning and piety. Wondrous indeed was how many hatreds he extinguished and how many wanderers he called back to the straight path of salvation. An outstanding devotee of the Mother of God, he published a book in her praise, and while he was preaching more fervently on her praises, he was more than once seen in the sight of all the people to shine entirely in his face with a marvelous light cast upon him from an image of the Virgin, and to be rapt in ecstasy. An assiduous contemplator of the Lord's Passion and of the holy Eucharist, he propagated its worship wonderfully. Indeed, whenever he prayed at the altar or offered the Holy Sacrifice — which he never omitted — he would, by the force of his love, either melt with seraphic ardors, or be shaken by extraordinary movements, or be drawn away from his senses. He joined a wondrous innocence of life, which no mortal sin ever defiled, with equal penance, chastising his body with fasting, iron chains, hairshirts, and bloody scourging. Amid all this, he became renowned for the gifts of prophecy, the reading of hearts, bilocation, and miracles.

He most steadfastly shrank from the ecclesiastical dignities offered to him; but, compelled by the authority of Clement XIII, he undertook the governance of the church of Sant'Agata dei Goti. As bishop, he changed only his outward dress, but not his austere manner of life. The same frugality, the utmost zeal for Christian discipline, intense dedication to restraining vices and warding off errors, and diligence in discharging the other pastoral duties continued unchanged. Liberal toward the poor, he distributed all the revenues of the church to them, and, when the price of grain rose sharply, he gave even his household furniture to feed the hungry. Made all things to all men, he brought religious women to a more perfect form of life and arranged for the founding of a monastery of the nuns of his congregation. Having resigned the episcopate on account of grave and habitual illnesses, he returned poor to his students, from whom he had departed poor. At last, though broken in body by old age, labors, long-standing arthritis, and other most grave illnesses, yet ever more joyful in spirit, he never ceased to discuss or write of heavenly things, until, at ninety years of age, on the Kalends of August, in the year seventeen hundred and eighty-seven, at Nocera dei Pagani, amid the tears of his students, he breathed his last most peacefully. Renowned after this for virtues and miracles, Pius VII, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled him in the catalogue of the Blessed in the year eighteen hundred and sixteen; and Gregory XVI, resplendent with new signs, solemnly added him to the catalogue of the Saints on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, in the year eighteen hundred and thirty-nine. Finally, Pius IX, Supreme Pontiff, on the advice of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, declared him a Doctor of the universal Church.

Our Lord and Savior, dearest brethren, admonishes us sometimes by words and sometimes by deeds. His very acts are precepts: for what he does in silence reveals what we ought to do. Behold, he sends the disciples forth in pairs to preach; for there are two commandments of charity, namely, the love of God and the love of neighbor; and charity cannot exist between fewer than two. For no one is said properly to have charity toward himself alone: but love reaches out to another, so that it may be charity.

Behold, the Lord sends out his disciples two by two to preach: that by this he may silently indicate to us that whoever has no charity toward another ought by no means to take up the office of preaching. For the Lord follows his preachers: because preaching goes before, and then the Lord comes to the dwelling of our heart when the words of exhortation have run ahead; and thus truth is received into the mind.
