35:7 Your justice is like the mountains of God: * your judgments are a great abyss.

5 Dixeruntque ei: Ecce tu senuisti, et filii tui non ambulant in viis tuis: constitue nobis regem, ut iudicet nos, sicut et universæ habent nationes.
6 Displicuit sermo in oculis Samuelis, eo quod dixissent: Da nobis regem, ut iudicet nos. Et oravit Samuel ad Dominum.
4 Therefore, all those greater by birth of Israel, having gathered together, went to Samuel at Ramah.
5 And they said to him: 'Behold, you are elderly, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Appoint for us a king, so that he may judge us, just as all the nations have.'
6 And the word was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, for they had said, 'Give us a king to judge us.' And Samuel prayed to the Lord.

10 And so, Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people, who had petitioned a king from him.
11 And he said: 'This will be the right of the king who will have authority over you: He will take your sons, and place them in his chariots. And he will make them his horsemen and his runners before his four-horse chariots.
12 And he will appoint them to be his tribunes and centurions, and the plowmen of his fields, and the harvesters of the grain, and the makers of his weapons and chariots.
13 Likewise, your daughters he will take for himself as makers of ointments, and as cooks and bakers.
14 Also, he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your best olive groves, and he will give them to his servants.'

℟ I took you from your father's house, says the Lord, and I set you to shepherd the flock of my people:

Among the wonderful advances in sacred doctrine and piety by which the counsels of divine Wisdom are more clearly manifested to the Church day by day, there is scarcely anything more conspicuous than the triumphant progress of devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Often indeed, in the course of earlier ages, the Fathers, Doctors, and Saints have celebrated the love of our Redeemer: they have called the wound opened in the side of Christ the mysterious fountain of all graces. But from the middle ages, as the faithful began to be moved by a more tender devotion toward the most holy Humanity of the Savior, contemplative souls were wont to penetrate through that wound to the very Heart itself, wounded by love for mankind. And from that time this contemplation became so familiar to the holiest souls that there is neither region nor religious order in which notable testimonies of it in this age are not found. In the most recent centuries, and especially at that time when heretics, under the guise of false piety, were seeking to deter Christians from the most holy Eucharist, public devotion to the Most Sacred Heart began to be displayed, chiefly through the work of Saint John Eudes, who is not undeservedly called the author of the liturgical cult of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Now, in order to establish and perfect the cult of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, and to spread it throughout the whole world, God himself chose as his instrument a most humble virgin of the Order of the Visitation, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, who, from her earliest years already burning with love for the Sacrament of the Eucharist, was often visited by Christ the Lord appearing to her; and he deigned to make known to her the riches and desires of his divine Heart. Of these apparitions the most celebrated is that in which Jesus showed himself to her as she prayed before the Eucharist, displayed his most Sacred Heart, and complained that, for all his immense charity, he received nothing but the insults of ungrateful men, and bade her take care to establish a new feast on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi, so that his Heart might be honored with fitting veneration, and the offenses inflicted upon him in the Sacrament of love by sinners might be expiated by worthy acts of reparation. How many and how great were the difficulties that God's servant experienced in carrying out the commands of Christ, there is no one who does not know; but confirmed by the Lord himself and strenuously aided by the spiritual directors of her soul, who labored with incredible ardor in promoting this devotion, she did not cease to fulfill faithfully unto death the ministry entrusted to her from heaven.

Finally, in the year one thousand seven hundred and sixty-five, Pope Clement XIII approved the Office and Mass in honor of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus; and Pius IX extended the feast to the universal Church. Thenceforth the cultus of the Most Sacred Heart, like a river overflowing its banks, swept away every obstacle and spread through the whole world; and at the dawn of a new century, the Jubilee being proclaimed, Pope Leo XIII wished the entire human race to be consecrated to the Most Sacred Heart. This consecration, carried out with solemn rite in all the churches of the Catholic world, brought an immense increase to this devotion, and drew to it not only peoples but also individual families, who consecrate themselves in countless numbers to the Divine Heart and submit themselves to its royal rule. Finally, Pope Pius XI, so that the solemnity of the feast might more fully answer to the devotion of the Christian people so widely spread, raised the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus to the rank of a double of the first class with an octave; and moreover, that the violated rights of Christ the supreme and most beloved King and Lord might be repaired, and the sins of peoples bewailed, he commanded that on the same feast day a reparatory prayer be recited each year in all the churches of the Christian world.

So that the Church might be formed from the side of Christ sleeping on the cross, and the Scripture fulfilled which says: They shall look upon him whom they have pierced, it was granted by divine ordinance that one of the soldiers should pierce and open that sacred side with a lance; so that with blood and water flowing forth, the price of our salvation might be poured out — which, issuing from the hidden fountain of the Heart, might give power to the Sacraments of the Church for the conferring of the life of grace, and might now be for those living in Christ the drink of the fountain of living water, springing up unto eternal life. Rise up, therefore, O soul, friend of Christ; cease not to be watchful; set your lips there, that you may draw water from the fountains of the Savior.

Since we have come once to the most sweet Heart of the Lord Jesus, and it is good for us to be here, let us not be easily torn away from it. O how good and delightful it is to dwell in this Heart. Your Heart, O best Jesus, is a good treasure, a precious pearl, which we found when the field of your body was dug. Who would cast away this pearl? Rather, I will give all my pearls; I will exchange and purchase it with all my thoughts and affections, casting all my care upon the Heart of the good Jesus, and without deceit it will nourish me. Having found this Heart, then — yours and mine, O most sweet Jesus — I will pray to you, my God: admit my prayers into the sanctuary of your hearing; indeed, draw me wholly into your Heart.

For it was for this that your side was pierced, that an entrance might be opened for us. For this was your Heart wounded, that, freed from outward disturbances, we might dwell within it. And likewise was it wounded for this, that through the visible wound we might see the invisible wound of love. How better could this ardor be shown, unless he permitted not only the body but the very Heart itself to be wounded by the lance? The wound of the flesh, therefore, shows the wound of the spirit. Who would not love a Heart so wounded? Who would not love in return one who loves so much? Who would not embrace one so pure?
