2 Grátia vobis, et pax adimpleátur in cognitióne Dei, et Christi Iesu Dómini nostri:
3 Quómodo ómnia nobis divínæ virtútis suæ, quæ ad vitam et pietátem donáta sunt, per cognitiónem eius, qui vocávit nos própria glória, et virtúte,

5 But you, bringing to bear every diligence, minister virtue in your faith; and in virtue, knowledge;
6 and in knowledge, moderation; and in moderation, patience; and in patience, piety;
7 and in piety, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity.
8 For if these things are with you, and if they abound, they will cause you to be neither empty nor without fruit in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For he who does not have these things at hand is blind and groping, being forgetful of his purification from his former offenses.

℟ All the beauty of the Lord is exalted above the stars:

10 Because of this, brothers, be all the more diligent, so that by good works you may make certain your calling and election. For in doing these things, you will not sin at any time.
11 For in this way, you shall be provided abundantly with an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
12 For this reason, I will always begin to admonish you about these things, even though, certainly, you know them and are confirmed in the present truth.
13 But I consider it just, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up with admonishments,
14 for it is certain that the laying to rest of this, my tabernacle, is approaching swiftly, just as our Lord Jesus Christ has also indicated to me.
15 Therefore, I will present a work for you to have, so that, frequently after my passing, you may call to mind these things.

Sacraméntum, dilectíssimi, salútis nostræ, quam prétio sánguinis sui universitátis Cónditor æstimávit, a die corporális ortus usque ad éxitum passiónis, per dispensatiónem humilitátis implétum est. Et licet multa, étiam in forma servi, divinitátis signa radiáverint; próprie tamen illíus témporis áctio ad demonstrándam suscépti hóminis pertínuit veritátem. Post passiónem vero ruptis mortis vínculis, quæ vim suam in eum, qui peccáti erat néscius, incedéndo perdíderat; infírmitas in virtútem, mortálitas in immortalitátem, contumélia transívit in glóriam: quam Dóminus Iesus Christus in multis manifestísque documéntis, multórum declarávit aspéctibus, donec triúmphum victóriæ, quem reportárat a mórtuis, inférret et cælis.

The sacrament of our salvation, dearest ones — which the Creator of the universe valued at the price of his own blood — was fulfilled from the day of his bodily birth to the close of the Passion, through the dispensation of humility. And although many signs of his divinity shone forth even in the form of a servant, the proper action of that time pertained to demonstrating the truth of the humanity he had assumed. But after the Passion, when the bonds of death were broken — death having lost its power in pressing forward against him who knew no sin — weakness passed into strength, mortality into immortality, ignominy into glory; which glory the Lord Jesus Christ declared by many and manifest proofs, in the sight of many, until he brought into the heavens as well the triumph of the victory he had won over the dead.

By this ordering of divine works we are grounded and built up: so that the grace of God would shine more wonderfully, when faith did not fail, hope did not waver, and charity did not grow cold, even after those things had been removed from the sight of men which, by their very presence, had rightly inspired reverence.

This is the strength of great souls, and truly the light of faithful hearts: to believe without hesitation what is not seen by bodily sight, and to fix one's desire upon that which one cannot bring into view. But how would this devotion arise in our hearts, or how could anyone be justified by faith, if our salvation rested only in those things that lie open to the eyes? Hence to that man who seemed to doubt the Resurrection of Christ, and who had examined and touched the traces of the Passion in his very flesh, both by sight and by touch, the Lord said: Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.

Verum dicit, si fidem opéribus tenet. Vera étenim fides est, quæ in hoc, quod verbis dicit, móribus non contradícit. Hinc est enim quod de quibúsdam falsis fidélibus Paulus dicit: Qui confiténtur se nosse Deum, factis autem negant. Whoever will have believed and been baptized will be saved; yet truly, whoever will not have believed will be condemned. Perhaps each one may say within himself: I have already believed, I shall be saved. He speaks truly, if he holds the faith by his works. For that is true faith which does not contradict in its conduct what it professes in words. Hence Paul says of certain false believers: They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny him. Hence John says: Whoever says that he knows God, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar.

Since this is so, we must acknowledge the truth of our faith in the consideration of our life. For we are truly faithful only if we fulfill in deeds what we promise in words. And so, let each one of you turn the eyes of the mind back to a consideration of himself; and if after Baptism he keeps what he pledged before Baptism, let him rejoice, already certain that he is faithful.

But behold, if he has kept very little of what he promised, if he has slipped into practising wicked deeds and coveting the pomps of the world: let us see whether he already knows how to weep over his error. For with a merciful judge, not even he is counted as a deceiver who returns to the truth, even after lying: because almighty God, while readily receiving our repentance, by his own judgment hides away what we have done wrong.
