Hymnus
Rex sempitérne Cǽlitum,
Rerum Creátor ómnium,
Æquális ante sǽcula
Semper Parénti Fílius:
Nascénte qui mundo Faber
Imáginem vultus tui
Tradens Adámo, nóbilem
Limo iugásti spíritum.
Cum livor et fraus dǽmonis
Fœdásset humánum genus:
Tu, carne amíctus, pérditam
Formam refórmas ártifex.
Qui, natus olim e Vírgine,
Nunc e sepúlcro násceris,
Tecúmque nos a mórtuis
Iubes sepúltos súrgere.
Qui, pastor ætérnus, gregem
Aqua lavas baptísmatis:
Hæc est lavácrum méntium:
Hæc est sepúlcrum críminum.
Nobis diu qui débitæ
Redémptor affíxus cruci,
Nostræ dedísti pródigus
Prétium salútis sánguinem.
Ut sis perénne méntibus
Paschále, Iesu, gáudium,
A morte dira críminum
Vitæ renátos líbera.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Et Fílio, qui a mórtuis
Surréxit, ac Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.
O thou, the heavens' eternal King,
Creator, unto thee we sing,
With God the Father ever One,
Co-equal, co-eternal Son.
Thy hand, when first the world began,
Made in thine own pure image man,
And linked to Adam, sprung from earth,
A living soul of heavenly birth.
And when by craft the envious foe
Had marred thy noblest work below,
Clothed in our flesh, thou didst restore
The image thou hadst made before.
Once wast thou born of Mary's womb;
And now, new-born from out the tomb,
O Christ, thou bidd'st us rise with thee
From death to immortality.
Eternal Shepherd, thou dost lave
Thy flock in pure baptismal wave,
That mystic bath, that grave of sin,
Where ransomed souls new life begin.
Redeemer, thou for us didst deign
To hang upon the Cross of pain,
And give for us the lavish price
Of thine own blood in sacrifice.
Grant, Lord, in thee each faithful mind
Unceasing paschal joy may find;
And from the death of sin set free
Souls newly born to life by thee.
To thee, once dead, who now dost live,
All glory, Lord, thy people give,
Whom, with the Father, we adore,
And Holy Ghost forevermore.
Amen.

77:1 O my people, attend to my law: * incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
77:2 I will open my mouth in parables: * I will speak about concepts that are from the beginning.
77:3 We have heard and known such great things: * and our fathers have described them to us.
77:4 These things have not been hidden from their sons: * in any generation.
77:4 Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his virtues: * and the wonders that he has done.
77:5 And he has received testimony with Jacob: * and he has set a law within Israel.
77:5 Such great things, he has commanded our fathers, so as to make these things known to their sons: * so that another generation might know them.
77:6 Sons who will be born and will grow up, * and will describe them to their sons.
77:7 So then, may they put their hope in God, and may they not forget the works of God: * and may they seek his commandments.
77:8 May they not become like their fathers: * a perverse and exasperating generation.
77:8 A generation that does not straighten their heart: * and whose spirit is not trustworthy with God.

77:12 Coram pátribus eórum fecit mirabília in terra Ægýpti: * in campo Táneos.
77:13 Interrúpit mare, et perdúxit eos: * et státuit aquas quasi in utre.
77:14 Et dedúxit eos in nube diéi: * et tota nocte in illuminatióne ignis.
77:15 Interrúpit petram in erémo: * et adaquávit eos velut in abýsso multa.
77:9 The sons of Ephraim, who bend and shoot the bow: * have been turned back in the day of battle.
77:10 They have not kept the covenant of God: * and they were not willing to walk in his law.
77:11 And they have been forgetful of his benefits: * and of his miracle, which he revealed to them.
77:12 He performed miracles in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt: * in the field of Tanis.
77:13 He broke the sea and he led them through: * and he stationed the waters, as if in a vessel.
77:14 And he led them with a cloud by day: * and with illumination by fire throughout the night.
77:15 He broke through the rock in the wasteland: * and he gave them to drink, as if from the great abyss.
77:16 He brought forth water from the rock: * and he conducted the waters, as if they were rivers.

Psalmus 77(17-31)
Psalm 77(17-31)
77:25 Panem Angelórum manducávit homo, * cibária misit eis in abundántia.
77:17 And yet, they continued to sin against him: * in a waterless place, they provoked the Most High with resentment.
77:18 And they tempted God in their hearts, * by asking for food according to their desires.
77:19 And they spoke badly about God: * they said, Would God be able to prepare a table in the desert?
77:20 He struck the rock, and so waters flowed, and the torrents flooded: * but would even he be able to provide bread,
77:20 or provide a table * for his people?
77:21 Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed: * and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.
77:22 For they neither put their trust in God: * nor did they hope in his salvation:
77:23 And he commanded the clouds from above: * and he opened the doors of heaven.
77:24 And he rained down manna upon them to eat: * and he gave them the bread of heaven.
77:25 Man ate the bread of Angels, * he sent them provisions in abundance.
77:26 He transferred the south wind from heaven: * and in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.
77:27 And he rained down flesh upon them, as if it were dust: * and feathered birds, as if they were the sand of the sea.
77:28 And they fell down in the midst of their camp: * encircling their tabernacles.
77:29 And they ate until they were greatly satisfied, and he brought to them according to their desires: * they were not cheated out of what they wanted.
77:30 Their food was still in their mouth: * and then the wrath of God came upon them.
77:31 And he slew the fat ones among them, * and he impeded the elect of Israel.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Ias 4:1-4
1 Where do wars and contentions among you come from? Is it not from this: from your own desires, which battle within your members?
2 You desire, and you do not have. You envy and you kill, and you are unable to obtain. You argue and you fight, and you do not have, because you do not ask.
3 You ask and you do not receive, because you ask badly, so that you may use it toward your own desires.
4 You adulterers! Do you not know that the friendship of this world is hostile to God? Therefore, whoever has chosen to be a friend of this world has been made into an enemy of God.

Ias 4:5-10
5 An putátis quia inániter Scriptúra dicat: Ad invídiam concupíscit spíritus qui hábitat in vobis?
5 Or do you think that Scripture says in vain: 'The spirit which lives within you desires unto envy?'
6 But he gives a greater grace. Therefore he says: 'God resists the arrogant, but he gives grace to the humble.'
7 Therefore, be subject to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners! And purify your hearts, you duplicitous souls!
9 Be afflicted: mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your gladness into sorrow.
10 Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
℟ In toto corde meo, allelúia, exquisívi te, allelúia:
℟ With my whole heart, alleluia, I have sought you, alleluia:
Ne repéllas me a mandátis tuis, allelúia, allelúia.

Ias 4:11-15
Ias 4:11-15
11 Brothers, do not choose to slander one another. Whoever slanders his brother, or whoever judges his brother, slanders the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.
12 There is one lawgiver and one judge. He is able to destroy, and he is able to set free.
13 But who are you to judge your neighbor? Consider this, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go into that city, and certainly we will spend a year there, and we will do business, and we will make our profit,'
14 consider that you do not know what will be tomorrow.
15 For what is your life? It is a mist that appears for a brief time, and afterwards will vanish away. So what you ought to say is: 'If the Lord wills,' or, 'If we live,' we will do this or that.
℟ Hymnum cantáte nobis, allelúia:
℟ Sing us a hymn, alleluia:

How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a foreign land? alleluia, alleluia.

77:33 And their days faded away into vanity: * and their years with haste.
77:34 When he slew them, then they sought him: * and they returned, and they drew near to him in the early morning.
77:35 And they were mindful that God is their helper: * and that the Most High God is their redeemer.
77:36 And they chose him with their mouth, * and then they lied to him with their tongue.
77:37 For their heart was not upright with him: * nor have they been living faithfully in his covenant.
77:38 Yet he is merciful, and he will pardon their sins: * and he will not destroy them.
77:38 And he has abundantly turned aside his own wrath: * and he did not enflame his wrath entirely:
77:39 And he remembered that they are flesh: * a spirit that goes forth and does not return.
77:40 How often did they provoke him in the desert, * and stir him to wrath in a waterless place?
77:41 And they turned back and tempted God: * and they exasperated the Holy One of Israel.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

77:42 They did not remember his hand, * in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of the one troubling them.
77:43 Thus he positioned his signs in Egypt, * and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
77:44 And he turned their rivers into blood, * along with their rain showers, so that they could not drink.
77:45 He sent among them the common fly, and it devoured them, * and the frog, and it scattered them.
77:46 And he gave up their fruits to mold, * and their labors to the locust.
77:47 And he slew their vineyards with hail, * and their mulberry trees with severe frost.
77:48 And he delivered their cattle to the hail, * and their possessions to fire.
77:49 And he sent the wrath of his indignation among them: * indignation and wrath and tribulation, sent forth by evil angels.
77:50 He made way for the path of his anger; he did not spare their souls from death: * and he enclosed their beasts of burden in death.
77:51 And he struck all the first-born in the land of Egypt: * the first-fruits of all their labor in the tabernacles of Ham.
77:52 And he took away his own people like sheep, * and he led them through the wilderness like a flock.
77:53 And he led them out in hope, and they did not fear: * and the sea covered their enemies.
77:54 And he led them to the mountain of his sanctification: * the mountain that his right hand had acquired.
77:54 And he cast out the Gentiles before their face: * and he divided their land by lot to them, with a line of distribution.
77:55 And he caused them to dwell in their tabernacles: * the tribes of Israel.
77:56 Yet they tempted and aggravated God Most High: * and they did not keep his testaments.
77:57 And they turned themselves aside, and they did not serve the covenant: * just as their fathers, they were turned backwards like a crooked bow.
77:58 They impelled him to anger on their hills: * and they provoked him to rivalry with their graven images.
Amen.
Ant. Redémit eos Dóminus de manu tribulántis.
Ant. The Lord redeemed them from the hand of the one who afflicted them.
Ant. Ædificávit * Deus sanctifícium suum in terra.
Ant. God * built his sanctuary on earth.
Psalmus 77(59-72)
Psalm 77(59-72)
77:72 Et pavit eos in innocéntia cordis sui: * et in intelléctibus mánuum suárum dedúxit eos.
77:59 God listened, and he spurned them: * and he reduced Israel greatly, almost to nothing.
77:60 And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh: * his tabernacle where he had dwelt among men.
77:61 And he delivered their virtue into captivity: * and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.
77:62 And he enclosed his people with the sword: * and he spurned his inheritance.
77:63 Fire consumed their young men: * and their virgins were not lamented.
77:64 Their priests fell by the sword: * and their widows did not weep.
77:65 And the Lord was awakened, as if out of sleep: * and like a powerful man impaired by wine.
77:66 And he struck his enemies on the back: * he gave them over to everlasting disgrace.
77:67 And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: * and he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
77:68 But he chose the tribe of Judah: * mount Zion, which he loved.
77:69 And he built up his sanctuary like a single-horned beast in the land, * which he founded for all ages.
77:70 And he chose his servant David, and he took him from the flocks of the sheep: * he received him from following the ewes with their young,
77:71 in order to pasture Jacob his servant, * and Israel his inheritance.
77:72 And he fed them with the innocence of his heart: * and he led them with the understanding of his hands.

John Baptist de Rossi, born of honorable family at Voltri in Liguria, was, while still a boy, an object of admiration to all for the gentleness of his character and his zeal for piety. At the age of thirteen he seemed sent by God's design to Rome to fulfill the role of an apostle there. Admitted among the students of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, he excelled in talent and virtue. He took great care that they frequented the Marian sodality, ministered to the sick in hospitals, and were drawn back from harmful things by wholesome recreation of their souls; meanwhile, treating heavenly things in his discourses, he roused the more sluggish, and thus earned the title of Apostle. Having been seized by a grave illness on account of the harsh mortification of his body, he was compelled to relax somewhat from his accustomed severity of study: which, he used to say, had been brought about by God's will, lest, puffed up by knowledge, he seek what was his own rather than the things of Jesus Christ. Enrolled in the clerical state, he applied himself to sacred studies in the college of Saint Thomas, and growing in virtue, he was then ordained to the priesthood with great joy of soul. He so established the Lord as his inheritance that he bound himself by a singular vow never to accept any ecclesiastical benefice, even if offered, unless compelled by obedience.
℟ In ecclésiis benedícite Deo, allelúia:
℟ Bless God in the churches, alleluia:

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.
Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

De spirituali proximorum salute iam ab adolescentia sollicitus, sacerdos factus in id totum se devovit. Ecclesiasticos viros, sacras virgines, oppidanos, carcere detentos, imam plebem universam mira suavitate, verbi ministerio ad virtutis amórem inflammabat. Plures quotidie horas rudiorum confessionibus excipiendis impendens, ægrotis aderat vel in domibus vel in valetudinarus, præsertim phisicis, quos sui veluti iuris esse affirmabat. Hac illac per urbem alacer advolans, innumeris operibus præsto erat: at assiduus in sanctæ Gallæ hospitio versabatur, ut pauperes, quos carissimos habuit, omni ope iuvaret. Ob id a decimo quinto ætatis anno adiunctus sacerdotum cœtui, qui eisdem evangelizando addicti sunt, ibi apostolatus sui rationem didicit, ipsiusque societatis opera instauravit et auxit. Eadem misericordia motus egenorum omnium necessitatibus sublevandis modicam suam substantiam impendit. Perennes autem infatigabilis sui zeli fructus reliquit, satellitum, vagorum, rudium institutionem, catecheses ad sancte Pascha celebrandum, certam custodiam perditarum, noctuque per Urbem vagantium mulierum hospitium, præcipue vero studium lucrandi animas in clero excitatum.
From early youth intent upon the spiritual salvation of his neighbors, he dedicated himself wholly to this end when he became a priest. Clerics, consecrated virgins, townspeople, those confined in prison, and the lowest of all the people — all of these he set ablaze with love of virtue through the ministry of the word, with wonderful gentleness. Devoting many hours each day to hearing the confessions of the uneducated, he attended the sick both in their homes and in hospitals, especially those with consumption, whom he claimed as his own particular charge. Flying swiftly hither and thither through the city, he was at hand for countless works of mercy: yet he spent much time in the hospice of Saint Galla, so as to assist with every resource the poor, whom he held most dear. For this reason, from his fifteenth year he was attached to the company of priests dedicated to the same work of evangelization; there he learned the method of his apostolate and restored and enlarged the works of that society. Moved by the same charity, he spent his modest substance on relieving the needs of all the destitute. He left as the enduring fruits of his tireless zeal: instruction for servants, vagrants, and the unlettered; catecheses for celebrating the holy Pascha; safe custody for women who were lost or who wandered through the City by night; and above all, the zeal for winning souls which he kindled among the clergy.
℟ In toto corde meo, allelúia, exquisívi te, allelúia:
℟ With my whole heart, alleluia, I have sought you, alleluia:
Ne repéllas me a mandátis tuis, allelúia, allelúia.
Cast me not away from your commandments, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Benedíctus es tu, Dómine, doce me iustificatiónes tuas.
℣ Blessed are you, O Lord, teach me your justifications.
℟ Ne repéllas me a mandátis tuis, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ Cast me not away from your commandments, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Amorem erga Deiparam in alios effundebat, eiusque cultum in sua ecclesia fovit, addito étiam psalmodiæ quotidiano laudum præconio. Philippi Nerii spiritu imbui studens, et in omnes cælites pius, Apostolorum Principum obsequium augendum curavit. In oratione omnique virtutum exercitatione assiduus, supernis quoque charismatibus donatus, tandem in hospitio, cui nomen a sanctissima Trinitate, quo se reduxerat in sacerdotum convictum, laboribus fractus ad vitæ exitum adductus est, atque Ecclesiæ sacramentis refectus, caritatis opera et pauperum curam commendans, decessit in osculo Domini, die vigesima tertia Maii, anno Christi millesimo septingentesimo sexagesimo quarto, ætatis suæ sexagesimo sexto. Insigne adeo sacerdotalis virtutis exemplar miraculis Deus illustrare dignatus est, quibus rite probatis, Summus Pontifex Pius nonus tertio Idus Maii anno millesimo octingentesimo sexagesimo cælitum beatorum honoribus auxit: novisque fulgentem signis Leo decimus tertius sexto Idus Decembris anno millesimo octingentesimo octogesimo primo in sanctorum albo recensuit.
The ardor of his charity toward God shone forth from his face while he was celebrating the sacred rites, and he could not speak of God's goodness without tears. Admitted by obedience into the college of canons of the basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin, he seemed to be rapt out of his senses while chanting the psalms. Most diligent in sacred ceremonies, he promoted the beauty of the house of God, and gladly spent his own resources for that purpose. He poured forth his love for the Mother of God upon others, fostered her cult in his own church, and added also the daily proclamation of her praises in psalmody. Earnestly desiring to be imbued with the spirit of Philip Neri, and devout toward all the saints, he took care to increase the veneration of the Princes of the Apostles. Assiduous in prayer and in every exercise of virtue, and endowed also with heavenly charisms, he was at last brought to the end of his life, worn out by his labors, in the hospice named after the Most Holy Trinity to which he had retired to live in community with other priests; and, refreshed with the Sacraments of the Church, commending to all works of charity and care for the poor, he departed in the kiss of the Lord, on the twenty-third day of May, in the year of Christ seventeen hundred and sixty-four, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. God was pleased to illustrate this outstanding example of priestly virtue with miracles, which being duly approved, the Supreme Pontiff Pius the Ninth enriched him with the honors of the blessed on the third day before the Ides of May in the year eighteen hundred and sixty; and Leo the Thirteenth, shining with new signs, enrolled him in the catalog of the saints on the sixth day before the Ides of December in the year eighteen hundred and eighty-one.

Psalm 78
78:1 Deus, venérunt gentes in hereditátem tuam, polluérunt templum sanctum tuum: * posuérunt Ierúsalem in pomórum custódiam.
78:5 Úsquequo, Dómine, irascéris in finem: * accendétur velut ignis zelus tuus?
78:1 O God, the Gentiles have entered into your inheritance; they have polluted your holy temple: * they have set Jerusalem as a place to keep an orchard.
78:2 They have placed the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky: * the flesh of your saints for the beasts of the earth.
78:3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem: * and there was no one who would bury them.
78:4 We have become a disgrace to our neighbors: * a mockery and a derision to those who are around us.
78:5 How long, O Lord? Will you be angry until the end? * Will your zeal be kindled like a fire?
78:6 Pour out your wrath among the Gentiles who have not known you: * and upon the kingdoms that have not invoked your name.
78:7 For they have devoured Jacob: * and they have desolated his place.
78:8 Do not remember our iniquities of the past; may your mercies quickly intercept us: * for we have been made greatly poor.
78:9 Help us, O God, our Savior; and free us, Lord, for the glory of your name: * and be merciful to our sins, for the sake of your name.
78:10 Let them not say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? * and may it become known among the nations before our eyes.
78:10 May the vengeance of the blood of your servants that has been poured out * enter before you as the groaning of those in chains.
78:11 According to the greatness of your arm, * take possession of the sons of those who have been put to death.
78:12 And repay our neighbors sevenfold within their sinews: * the reproach with which they have reproached you, O Lord.
78:13 But we are your people and the sheep of your pasture: * we will give thanks to you in all ages.
78:13 From generation to generation * we will declare your praise.

80:7 He turned his back from the burdens: * his hands had served in the basket.
80:8 In tribulation you called upon me, and I delivered you: * I heard you in the secret place of the storm; I proved you at the waters of contradiction.
80:9 Hear, O my people, and I will testify to you: * O Israel, if you will hear me, there shall be no new god among you, nor shall you adore a foreign god.
80:11 For I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt: * open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
80:12 But my people did not hear my voice: * and Israel did not heed me.

82:2 O God, who shall be like you? * Be not silent, neither be still, O God.
82:3 For behold, your enemies have made a noise: * and they who hate you have lifted up their head.
82:4 They have devised a malicious counsel against your people: * and they have plotted against your holy ones.
82:5 They have said: Come, and let us destroy them as a nation: * and let the name of Israel be remembered no more.
82:6 For they have plotted together with one accord: * they have made a covenant against you— the tents of the Edomites and the Ishmaelites:
82:8 Moab and the Hagarenes, Gebal and Ammon and Amalek: * the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre.
82:9 And Assyria also has come with them: * they have become a help for the sons of Lot.
82:10 Do to them as you did to Midian and to Sisera: * as to Jabin at the torrent of Kishon.
82:11 They perished at Endor: * they became as dung upon the earth.
82:12 Make their princes as Oreb and Zeb, * and Zebah and Zalmunna:
82:13 All their princes: * who have said: Let us possess the sanctuary of God as our inheritance.
82:14 O my God, make them like a wheel, * and like stubble before the face of the wind.
82:15 As fire that burns a forest: * and as a flame burning mountains:
82:16 So shall you pursue them in your storm: * and in your anger you shall trouble them.
82:17 Fill their faces with shame: * and they shall seek your name, O Lord.
82:18 Let them be ashamed and troubled for ever and ever: * and let them be confounded and perish.
82:19 And let them know that the Lord is your name: * you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
Amen.
Ant. Ne táceas Deus quóniam inimíci tui extulérunt caput.
Ant. Be not silent, O God, for your enemies have lifted up their head.
℣ Lex Dei eius in corde ipsíus.
℣ The law of his God is in his heart.
℟ Et non supplantabúntur gressus eius.
℟ And his steps shall not be overthrown.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:
℣ Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℣ And lead us not into temptation:
℟ Sed líbera nos a malo.
℟ But deliver us from evil.
Absolutio. A vínculis peccatórum nostrórum absólvat nos omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus.
Absolutio. May the almighty and merciful Lord absolve us from the bonds of our sins.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio.
Benedictio. May he bless us who lives and reigns without end.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Ioannes 16:5-14
Ioannes 16:5-14
In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis: Vado ad eum qui misit me; et nemo ex vobis intérrogat me, Quo vadis? Et réliqua.
Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi
At that time: Jesus said to his disciples: I go to him who sent me; and none of you asks me, Where are you going? And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Augustine the Bishop
Tractatus 94 in Ioannem, initio
Tractatus 94 in Ioannem, initio
When the Lord Jesus had foretold to his disciples the persecutions they were to suffer after his departure, he added and said: But these things I did not tell you from the beginning, because I was with you; but now I go to him who sent me. Here we must first consider whether he had not foretold future persecutions to them before. But the other three Evangelists demonstrate sufficiently that he had foretold these things before the supper was reached; and after the supper was finished, according to John, he spoke these words, when he says: But these things I did not tell you from the beginning, because I was with you.
℟ Deus, cánticum novum cantábo tibi, allelúia:
℟ O God, I will sing to you a new song, alleluia:
In psaltério decem chordárum psallam tibi, allelúia, allelúia.
On the psaltery of ten strings I will sing praise to you, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Deus meus es tu, et confitébor tibi: Deus meus es tu, et exaltábo te.
℣ You are my God, and I will confess you; you are my God, and I will exalt you.
℟ In psaltério decem chordárum psallam tibi, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ On the psaltery of ten strings I will sing praise to you, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

Perhaps the question is resolved from this, that those Evangelists also narrate that he was near to his Passion when he said these things? Not, therefore, from the beginning, when he was with them: because already about to depart, already about to go to the Father, he said these things. And therefore, even according to those Evangelists, what is said here is true: These things I did not tell you from the beginning. But what do we do with the testimony of the Gospel according to Matthew, who recalls that these things were announced by the Lord to his disciples not only when, the Passover now at hand, he was about to sup with his disciples, with his Passion imminent, but also from the beginning — where the twelve Apostles are first expressly named, and are sent forth for divine works?
℟ Bonum est confitéri Dómino, allelúia:
℟ It is good to give praise to the Lord, alleluia:
Et psállere, allelúia.
And to sing psalms, alleluia.
℣ In decachórdo psaltério, cum cántico et cíthara.
℣ Upon the psaltery of ten strings, with canticle and harp.
℟ Et psállere, allelúia.
℟ And to sing psalms, alleluia.
Amen.
℟ Et psállere, allelúia.
℟ And to sing psalms, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

What does it mean, then, that he says here: These things I have not told you from the beginning, because I was with you — unless it means that what he speaks here about the Holy Spirit, namely that he will come to them and bear witness, when they are about to suffer those evils, he had not told them from the beginning, because he was with them? The Consoler, therefore, or advocate — for both meanings are conveyed by the Greek word Paraclete — had been necessary at the departure of Christ; and therefore he had not spoken of him from the beginning, when he was with them, because they were consoled by his presence.
