2 In médio platéæ eius, et ex utráque parte flúminis, lignum vitæ, áfferens fructus duódecim per menses síngulos, reddens fructum suum et fólia ligni ad sanitátem géntium.
3 Et omne maledíctum non erit ámplius: sed sedes Dei et Agni in illa erunt, et servi eius sérvient illi.
4 Et vidébunt fáciem eius: et nomen eius in fróntibus eórum.

1 And he showed me the river of the water of life, shining like crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of its main street, and on both sides of the river, was the Tree of Life, bearing twelve fruits, offering one fruit for each month, and the leaves of the tree are for the health of the nations.
3 And every curse shall be no more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants shall serve him.
4 And they shall see his face. And his name shall be on their foreheads.
5 And night shall be no more. And they will not need the light of a lamp, nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them. And they shall reign forever and ever.
6 And he said to me: 'These words are entirely faithful and true.' And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his Angel to reveal to his servant what must occur soon:
7 'For behold, I am approaching quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.'

8 And I, John, heard and saw these things. And, after I had heard and seen, I fell down, so as to adore before the feet of the Angel, who was revealing these things to me.
9 And he said to me: 'Be careful not to do so. For I am your fellow servant, and I am among your brothers the prophets, and among those who keep the words of the prophecy of this book. Adore God.'
10 And he said to me: 'Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book. For the time is near.
11 Whoever does harm, he might still do harm. And whoever is filthy, he might still be filthy. And whoever is just, he may still be just. And one who is holy, he may still be holy.
12 Behold, I am approaching quickly! And my repayment is with me, to render to each one according to his works.'

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes in the blood of the Lamb. So may they have a right to the tree of life; so may they enter through the gates into the City.

18 For I call as witnesses all listeners of the words of the prophecy of this book. If anyone will have added to these, God will add upon him the afflictions written in this book.

Paschal Baylon, born of poor and devout parents in the town of Torre Hermosa in the diocese of Sigüenza in Aragon, gave many signs of future holiness from his tenderest years. Blessed with a good soul and supremely devoted to heavenly things, he spent his childhood and youth in the care of flocks — a way of life he loved especially because he judged it most useful and fitting for fostering humility and preserving innocence. He was moderate in food, assiduous in prayer, and so flourished in authority and grace among those of his own age and his companions that, settling their disputes, correcting their errors, instructing their ignorance, and stirring up their sloth, he was cultivated and loved with the greatest devotion as a kind of parent and teacher of them all, and was even then called blessed by many.

He who, in the world—that is, in a dry and waterless land—had flourished so happily, a flower of the valleys planted in the house of the Lord, spread everywhere the wondrous fragrance of holiness. And so Paschal, having embraced the way of a stricter life and been admitted into the Order of Friars Minor of the stricter observance of the Discalced, exulted like a giant to run his course; and giving himself wholly to the Lord to be cultivated, he pondered day and night in what way he might more and more conform himself to him. Thus it quickly came about that even those more advanced in the spiritual life proposed him as a model of seraphic perfection to be imitated. Placed in the humble rank of the servants, regarding himself as the offscouring of all, he embraced with the greatest cheerfulness every arduous and lowly service of the house, as though owed to him by some special right, and exercised them with equal humility and patience. He afflicted with constant mortification the flesh that at times strove to resist the spirit, and reduced it to subjection; while the spirit, through continual self-denial, he stretched forward more fervently day by day toward what lies ahead.

The Virgin Mother of God, to whose service he had dedicated himself from his earliest years, he honored as a mother with daily acts of devotion and implored with filial confidence. Moreover, it is difficult to say with what ardent affection he was held toward the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist; an affection which he seemed to retain even after death in his corpse, for as he lay on the bier, he twice opened and closed his eyes at the elevation of the sacred Host, to the great wonder of all who were present. Having publicly and openly professed the truth of this same Sacrament among heretics, he suffered much and greatly on that account; and frequently sought for death, yet was snatched from the hands of the impious by the singular providence of God. Módicum est hoc totum spátium, quo præsens pérvolat sǽculum. Unde dicit idem ipse Evangelísta in Epístola sua: Novíssima hora est. Ideo namque áddidit: Quia vado ad Patrem: quod ad priórem senténtiam referéndum est, ubi ait: Módicum et iam non vidébitis me: non ad posteriórem, ubi ait: Et íterum módicum, et vidébitis me. Eúndo quippe ad Patrem, factúrus erat ut eum non vidérent. Ac per hoc non ídeo dictum est, quia fúerat moritúrus, et donec resúrgeret, ab eórum aspéctibus recessúrus: sed quod esset itúrus ad Patrem, quod fecit posteáquam resurréxit, et cum eis per quadragínta dies conversátus, ascéndit in cælum.

This entire span, in which the present age swiftly passes, is but a little while. Hence the same Evangelist says in his Letter: It is the final hour. He added, therefore: Because I am going to the Father — which is to be referred to the former statement, where he says: A little while and you will see me no more; not to the latter, where he says: And again a little while and you will see me. For by going to the Father, he was about to cause them not to see him. And therefore it was not said because he was about to die and, until he rose again, would withdraw from their sight; but because he was going to the Father — which he did after he rose, and, having conversed with them for forty days, ascended into heaven.
