5 Surrexérunt autem quidam de hǽresi Pharisæórum, qui credidérunt, dicéntes quia opórtet circumcídi eos, præcípere quoque serváre legem Móysi.
6 Convenerúntque Apóstoli et senióres vidére de verbo hoc.
7 Cum autem magna conquisítio fíeret, surgens Petrus dixit ad eos: Viri fratres, vos scitis quóniam ab antíquis diébus Deus in nobis elégit, per os meum audíre gentes verbum Evangélii et crédere.
8 Et qui novit corda Deus, testimónium perhíbuit, dans illis Spíritum Sanctum, sicut et nobis,
9 et nihil discrévit inter nos et illos, fide puríficans corda eórum.
10 Nunc ergo quid tentátis Deum, impónere iugum super cervíces discipulórum quod neque patres nostri, neque nos portáre potúimus?

5 But some from the sect of the Pharisees, those who were believers, rose up saying, 'It is necessary for them to be circumcised and to be instructed to keep the Law of Moses.'
6 And the Apostles and elders came together to take care of this matter.
7 And after a great contention had taken place, Peter rose up and said to them: 'Noble brothers, you know that, in recent days, God has chosen from among us, by my mouth, Gentiles to hear the word of the Gospel and to believe.
8 And God, who knows hearts, offered testimony, by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as to us.
9 And he distinguished nothing between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10 Now therefore, why do you tempt God to impose a yoke upon the necks of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
11 But by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe in order to be saved, in the same manner also as them.
12 Then the entire multitude was silent. And they were listening to Barnabas and Paul, describing what great signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles through them.

13 And after they had been silent, James responded by saying: 'Noble brothers, listen to me.
14 Simon has explained in what manner God first visited, so as to take from the Gentiles a people to his name.
15 And the words of the Prophets are in agreement with this, just as it was written:
16 "After these things, I will return, and I will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down. And I will rebuild its ruins, and I will raise it up,
17 so that the rest of men may seek the Lord, along with all the nations over whom my name has been invoked, says the Lord, who does these things."
18 To the Lord, his own work has been known from eternity.
19 Because of this, I judge that those who were converted to God from among the Gentiles are not to be disturbed,
20 but instead that we write to them, that they should keep themselves from the defilement of idols, and from fornication, and from whatever has been suffocated, and from blood.
21 For Moses, from ancient times, has had in each city those who preach him in the synagogues, where he is read on every Sabbath.'

28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose no further burden upon you, other than these necessary things:
29 that you abstain from things immolated to idols, and from blood, and from what has been suffocated, and from fornication. You will do well to keep yourselves from these things. Farewell.'

Pius, born in the town of Lombardy called Bosco, but of Bolognese origin from the noble family of Ghislieri, entered the Order of Preachers at the age of fourteen. In him there was an admirable patience, a profound humility, a supreme austerity of life, a continual devotion to prayer, and a most ardent zeal for regular observance and the honor of God. Devoting himself to philosophy and theology, he excelled in them so greatly that he exercised the office of teaching them with great distinction for many years. He preached to the people in several places with the greatest fruit for his hearers. He sustained with inviolable fortitude of soul the office of inquisitor for a long time; and he kept many cities safe from the heresy then spreading, not without danger to his own life.

Appointed by Paul IV — to whom he was most dear for his outstanding virtues — to the bishopric of Nepi and Sutri, and after two years enrolled among the cardinal priests of the Roman Church, he was then transferred by Pius IV to the church of Monreale in Piedmont. When he learned that many abuses had crept in there, he visited the entire diocese; and having set things in order, he returned to Rome. Engaged in the most weighty affairs, he rendered his decisions with apostolic freedom and constancy. After the death of Pius, elected Pontiff beyond all expectation, he changed nothing in his manner of life except his external dress. He defeated Selim, the Turkish tyrant, who had been exalted by many victories, when he had assembled a great fleet at the Echinades islands — overcoming him not so much by arms as by prayers poured out to God. You have heard, dearest brethren, your instruction from the reading of the Gospel; you have also heard of our peril. For behold, he who is good not by an accidental gift but essentially, says: I am the good shepherd. And he adds the form of that same goodness which we are to imitate, saying: The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. He did what he enjoined; he showed what he commanded. The good shepherd laid down his life for his sheep, so that in the Sacrament he would transform his Body and Blood for our sake, and satisfy the sheep he had redeemed with the nourishment of his own flesh.

And there are some who, while they love earthly substance more than the sheep, deservedly lose the name of shepherd: of whom it is immediately added: But the hireling, and he who is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming, and he leaves the sheep, and flees. He is called not shepherd but hireling, who feeds the Lord's sheep not out of interior love, but for temporal wages. For he is truly a hireling who indeed holds the place of shepherd, but does not seek the profit of souls: he yearns for earthly advantages, rejoices in the honor of preferment, is nourished by temporal gains, is glad at the reverence shown him by men.
