Hymnus
Vírginis Proles, Opiféxque Matris,
Virgo quem gessit, peperítque Virgo:
Vírginis festum cánimus beátæ,
Accipe votum.
Huius orátu, Deus alme, nobis
Débitas pœnas scélerum remítte;
Ut tibi puro resonémus almum
Péctore carmen.
Sit decus Patri, genitǽque Proli,
Et tibi, compar utriúsque virtus,
Spíritus semper, Deus unus, omni
Témporis ævo.
Amen.
Son of a virgin, maker of thy mother,
Thou, rod and blossom from a stem unstainèd,
While we a Virgin's triumphs are rehearsing,
Hear our petition!
Lo, on thy handmaid fell a two-fold blessing,
Who, in her body vanquishing the weakness,
In that same body, grace from heaven obtaining,
Bore the world witness.
Death, nor the rending pains of death appalled her;
Bondage and torment found her undefeated:
So by the shedding of her blood attained she
Heavenly guerdon.
Fountain of mercy, hear the prayers she offers;
Purge our offences, pardon our transgressions,
So that hereafter we to thee may render
Praise with thanksgiving.
Thou, the All-Father, thou, the One-Begotten,
Thou, Holy Spirit, Three in One co-equal,
Glory be henceforth thine through all the ages,
World without ending.
Amen.

Psalm 8

8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!
8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him? * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor: * and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition the beasts of the field.
8:9 The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.

Psalm 18
18:10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * iudícia Dómini vera, iustificáta in semetípsa.

18:15b Dómine, adiútor meus, * et redémptor meus.
18:2 The heavens describe the glory of God: * and the firmament announces the work of his hands.

18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth: * and their words to the ends of the world.
18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun: * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom:
18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way, * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven:
18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit: * neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.
18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.
18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts: * the precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.
18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
18:11 Desirable beyond gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.
18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord: * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.
18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate: * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.
18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please: * along with the meditation of my heart in your sight always.
18:15b O Lord, my helper, * and my redeemer.

De Actibus Apostolórum
From the Acts of the Apostles
Act. 3:1-6
Act. 3:1-6
5 At ille intendébat in eos, sperans se áliquid acceptúrum ab eis.
1 Now Peter and John went up to the temple at the ninth hour of prayer.
2 And a certain man, who was lame from his mother's womb, was being carried in. He was placed daily at the gate of the temple, which is called Beautiful, so that he might beg alms from those entering the temple.
3 And this man, when he had seen Peter and John beginning to enter the temple, was begging to receive alms.
4 Then Peter and John, gazing at him, said: 'Look at us.'
5 And he looked intently at them, hoping that he might receive something from them.
6 But Peter said: 'Silver and gold is not mine. But what I have, I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, rise up and walk.'
℟ Christ, rising from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over him: for in that he died, he died to sin once:
Quod autem vivit, vivit Deo, allelúia, allelúia.
But in that he lives, he lives unto God, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ He died once for our offenses, and rose again for our justification.
℟ Quod autem vivit, vivit Deo, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ But in that he lives, he lives unto God, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.
Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Act. 3:7-11
7 And taking him by the right hand, he lifted him up. And immediately his legs and feet were strengthened.
8 And leaping up, he stood and walked around. And he entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.
9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God.
10 And they recognized him, that he was the same one who was sitting for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. And they were filled with awe and amazement at what had happened to him.
11 Then, as he held on to Peter and John, all the people ran to them at the portico, which is called Solomon's, in astonishment.

15 Auctórem vero vitæ interfecístis, quem Deus suscitávit a mórtuis, cuius nos testes sumus.
12 But Peter, seeing this, responded to the people: 'Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this? Or why do you stare at us, as if it were by our own strength or power that we caused this man to walk?
13 The God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Son Jesus, whom you, indeed, handed over and denied before the face of Pilate, when he was giving judgment to release him.
14 Then you denied the Holy and Just One, and petitioned for a murderous man to be given to you.
15 Truly, it was the Author of Life whom you put to death, whom God raised from the dead, to whom we are witnesses.
16 And by faith in his name, this man, whom you have seen and known, has confirmed his name. And faith through him has given this man complete health in the sight of you all.'
℟ Behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered, to open the book and to loose its seven seals:
Allelúia, allelúia, allelúia.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.
℟ Allelúia, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Catherine, a virgin of Siena, born of devout parents, obtained the habit of Blessed Dominic, which the Sisters of Penance wear. Her abstinence was surpassing, and the austerity of her life admirable. While staying at Pisa, on a Sunday, having been refreshed with the heavenly food and caught up in ecstasy, she saw the Lord crucified approaching with great light, and from the scars of his wounds five rays descending to five places on her body. Perceiving the mystery, she prayed to the Lord that the scars might not appear; and immediately the rays, their blood-red color changed to brilliant white, came in the form of pure light to her hands, feet, and heart. So great, indeed, was the pain which she sensibly endured, though the bloody signs of the wounds did not appear, that she believed she would die in a short time, had not God lessened it. Her learning was infused, not acquired. Setting out for Avignon to Pope Gregory the Eleventh, she showed him that she had known by divine revelation his secret vow to go to Rome, known to God alone, and was the occasion of the Pontiff's going in person to the Roman See. In about the thirty-third year of her age she went to her Spouse. Pius the Second enrolled her in the number of holy Virgins.
We praise you, O God: * we acknowledge you as Lord.
All the earth worships you, * the Father everlasting.
To you all the Angels, * the Heavens and all the Powers,
To you the Cherubim and Seraphim * cry out without ceasing:
(A bow is made) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Sabaoth.
The heavens and the earth are full * of the majesty of your glory.
You the glorious * chorus of Apostles,
You the praiseworthy * company of Prophets,
You the white-robed * army of Martyrs praise.
Throughout the world * the holy Church proclaims you:
Father, * of immeasurable majesty;
Your true and only * Son, worthy of worship;
And the Holy Spirit, * the Comforter.
You, O Christ, * are the King of glory.
You are the everlasting * Son of the Father.
(A bow is made) When you were about to take on man for his liberation, * you did not disdain the Virgin's womb.
When you were about to take on man for his liberation, * you did not disdain the Virgin's womb.
Having overcome the sting of death, * you opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
You sit at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
You are believed * to be the judge to come.

Jesus whom you seek is not here; he has risen as he said; he will go before you into Galilee, there you will see him, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ And very early on the first day of the week they come to the tomb, the sun having already risen: and entering, they saw a young man sitting on the right, who said to them.

While staying at Pisa on a Sunday, having been refreshed with the heavenly food and caught up in ecstasy, she saw the Lord crucified coming with a great light, and from the wounds of his five stigmata five rays descending to five places on her body; and perceiving the mystery, she prayed to the Lord that the marks not appear; immediately the rays changed from a blood-red color to a brilliant one, and in the form of pure light reached her hands, feet, and heart: and the pain which she sensibly endured was so great that, had God not lessened it, she believed she would soon die. This grace the most loving Lord accumulated with a new grace, that she should feel the pain of the inflowing force of the wounds yet the bloody marks not appear. When the servant of God had reported this to her confessor Raymond as it had taken place, so that it might also be represented to the eyes, the devout care of the faithful expressed in painted colors the rays reaching to the said five places in images of blessed Catherine.

Her learning was infused, not acquired; she answered professors of sacred letters who put to her the most difficult questions about divinity. No one came to her who did not leave the better for it; she extinguished many hatreds and calmed deadly enmities. For the sake of peace for the Florentines, who were at odds with the Church and placed under ecclesiastical interdict, she journeyed to Avignon to Pope Gregory XI. To him she revealed that she knew by divine inspiration the vow he had made — known to God alone — of returning to the City; and the Pontiff resolved, on her urging as well, to go in person to his Roman see: which he did. She was most highly regarded by that same Gregory and by his successor Urban VI, so much so that she served as their envoy. Finally, after countless marks of virtue and being illustrious by the gift of prophecy and many miracles, she migrated to her Spouse in about the thirty-third year of her age. Pope Pius II enrolled her in the number of the holy Virgins.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Ioannes 20:19-31
Ioannes 20:19-31
In illo témpore: Cum sero esset die illo, una sabbatórum, et fores essent clausæ, ubi erant discípuli congregáti propter metum Iudæórum: venit Iesus, et stetit in médio, et dixit eis: Pax vobis. Et réliqua.
Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ
At that time: When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were shut where the disciples had gathered for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them: Peace be with you. And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Gregory the Pope
Homilia 26 in Evangelia
Homilia 26 in Evangelia
The first question of this Gospel reading strikes the mind: how after the Resurrection was the Lord's body truly a real body, if it was able to enter through closed doors to the disciples? But we must understand that a divine work, if it is grasped by reason, is not admirable; nor does faith have merit when human reason provides the proof. But these very works of our Redeemer, which can in no way be comprehended by themselves, must be weighed against another of his works, so that more wonderful deeds may lend credence to the wondrous things. For that same body of the Lord entered through closed doors to the disciples, which had visibly departed, to human eyes, through the closed womb of the Virgin at his birth. What wonder is it, then, if through closed doors after his Resurrection he entered — he who was henceforth to live forever — who, when coming to die, had gone forth without opening the womb of the Virgin?
℟ From the mouth of the wise man honey flows forth, alleluia: the sweetness of honey is under his tongue, alleluia:
Favus distíllans lábia eius, allelúia, allelúia.
His lips are a dripping honeycomb, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Wisdom rests in his heart, and prudence is in the word of his mouth.
℟ Favus distíllans lábia eius, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ His lips are a dripping honeycomb, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
℟ Favus distíllans lábia eius, allelúia, allelúia.
℟ His lips are a dripping honeycomb, alleluia, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

But because faith doubted concerning that body which could be seen, he showed them at once his hands and side, offered the flesh to be touched, which he had brought in through closed doors. In this he showed two marvels, very contrary to each other according to human reason: for after his Resurrection he showed his body to be incorruptible, and yet palpable. For that which is touched is necessarily subject to corruption: and that which is not subject to corruption cannot be touched. But in a wonderful and inestimable manner our Redeemer after the Resurrection showed his body both incorruptible and palpable: that by showing it incorruptible, he might invite to the reward, and by offering it palpable, he might strengthen faith. He showed himself, therefore, both incorruptible and palpable: so as manifestly to show that after the Resurrection his body was of the same nature and yet of a different glory.
℟ Surgens Iesus Dóminus noster, stans in médio discipulórum suórum, dixit:
℟ Rising, our Lord Jesus, standing in the midst of his disciples, said:
Pax vobis, allelúia: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúia.
Peace be with you, alleluia: the disciples rejoiced at the sight of the Lord, alleluia.
℣ Una ergo sabbatórum, cum fores essent clausæ, ubi erant discípuli congregáti, venit Iesus, et stetit in medio eórum, et dixit eis.
℣ On the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were gathered, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them.
℟ Pax vobis, allelúia: gavísi sunt discípuli viso Dómino, allelúia.
℟ Peace be with you, alleluia: the disciples rejoiced at the sight of the Lord, alleluia.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

Dixit eis: Pax vobis.
He said to them: "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you" — that is, as God the Father sent me who am God, so I who am man send you who are men. The Father sent the Son, who ordained that he should be incarnate for the redemption of the human race. He willed him indeed to come into the world to suffer Passion; yet he loved the Son whom he sent to Passion. The Lord, however, sends the chosen Apostles into the world not for the joys of the world, but, just as he himself was sent, to sufferings. Therefore, since the Son is both loved by the Father and yet sent to Passion, so the disciples are loved by the Lord and yet sent into the world for Passion. Therefore it is rightly said: "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" — that is, I love you with the same charity with which I send you amid the scandals of persecutors, as the Father loves me with that charity by which he made me come to endure sufferings.
