1 Stand firm, and do not be willing to be again held by the yoke of servitude.

3 For I again testify, about every man circumcising himself, that he is obligated to act according to the entire law.
4 You are being emptied of Christ, you who are being justified by the law. You have fallen from grace.
5 For in spirit, by faith, we await the hope of justice.

10 I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will accept nothing of the kind. However, he who disturbs you shall bear the judgment, whomever he may be.

11 And as for me, brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still suffering persecution? For then the scandal of the Cross would be made empty.
12 And I wish that those who disturb you would be torn away.
13 For you, brothers, have been called to liberty. Only you must not make liberty into an occasion for the flesh, but instead, serve one another through the charity of the Spirit.
14 For the entire law is fulfilled by one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you are not consumed by one another!
16 So then, I say: Walk in the spirit, and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
17 For the flesh desires against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. And since these are against one another, you may not do whatever you want.

Peter Nolasco, born of a noble family at Recaud near Carcassonne in France, excelled in singular charity toward his neighbor. A presage of this virtue was the fact that while he was still an infant wailing in the cradle, a swarm of bees flew to him and built a honeycomb of wax in his right hand. Orphaned as a young man and abhorring the Albigensian heresy that was then spreading in France, he sold his patrimony and withdrew to Spain; and at the shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Montserrat he fulfilled the vow by which he had previously bound himself. Then, going to Barcelona, when he had spent all his money in redeeming faithful Christians from the bondage of enemies, he kept saying that he wished to sell himself for their liberation, or to be substituted in their chains.

How acceptable to God was this holy man's desire, the subsequent event declared; for one night, as he was at prayer and pondering deeply in his heart the relief of the Christians languishing in captivity, the Blessed Virgin appeared and suggested that it would be most pleasing to her Son and to herself if a religious order were founded in her honor, whose special charge it would be to free captives from the tyranny of unbelievers. Obeying at once this heavenly admonition, together with Saint Raymond of Peñafort and James the First, king of Aragon — who had been forewarned by the Mother of God herself about the same thing that same night — he founded the Order of the Blessed Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Captives, with his companions bound by a fourth vow of remaining as a pledge in the power of the pagans, if need be for the liberation of Christians.

Et notándum, quod hic primus speciáliter curátus sit: secúndo, puer centuriónis: tértio, socrus Petri fébriens in Caphárnaum: quarto loco, qui obláti sunt ei a dæmónio vexáti: quorum spíritus verbo eiciébat, quando et omnes male habéntes curávit.

As the Lord came down from the mountain, the crowds met him, because they had not been able to ascend to the higher places. And the first to meet him was a leper; for one who had leprosy could not yet hear the Lord's manifold discourse on the mountain. And it is to be noted that this man was the first to be cured in a special way; the second was the centurion's servant; the third was Peter's mother-in-law, burning with fever in Capernaum; and the fourth were those who were brought to him tormented by a demon, whose spirits he drove out by a word, when he also healed all who were ill.

And behold, a leper came to him and worshipped him, saying. Rightly after the preaching and teaching an occasion for a sign is offered, so that through the power of the miracle the sermon previously delivered may be confirmed before the hearers. Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. He who asks about the will does not doubt the power. And Jesus stretching out his hand touched him, saying: I will; be made clean. As the Lord stretched out his hand, leprosy immediately fled. And at the same time consider how humble and without boasting his reply was. The man had said, If you will; the Lord replied, I will. The man had prefaced it: You can make me clean; the Lord joins to it and says, Be made clean. Therefore, contrary to what most of the Latins think, the words are not to be joined together and read, I will to cleanse; but separately, so that he first says, I will; then gives the command, Be made clean.

Erat enim lege præcéptum, ut, qui mundáti fúerant a lepra, offérrent múnera sacerdótibus. Deínde, ut mundátum vidéntes leprósum, aut créderent Salvatóri, aut non créderent: si créderent, salvaréntur; si non créderent, inexcusábiles forent. Et simul, ne, quod in eo sæpíssime criminabántur, legem viderétur infríngere.

And Jesus said to him: See that you tell no one. And indeed what need was there to proclaim in words what the body openly displayed? But go, show yourself to the priest. He sends him to the priest for various reasons: first, for the sake of humility, so that he might appear to show honor to the priests. For it had been commanded by the Law that those who had been cleansed of leprosy should offer gifts to the priests. Then, so that the priests, seeing the leper cleansed, might either believe in the Savior or not: if they believed, they would be saved; if they did not believe, they would be without excuse. And at the same time, lest he be seen to transgress the Law, which they were constantly charging against him.
