1 Et duxit me ad portam, quæ respiciébat ad viam Orientalem,
2 et ecce glória Dei Israël ingrediebátur per viam Orientalem, et vox erat ei quasi vox aquárum multárum, et terra splendébat a maiestate eius.
3 Et vidi visiónem secúndum spéciem quam víderam, quando venit ut dispérderet civitátem, et spécies secúndum aspéctum quem videram iuxta fluvium Chobar, et cécidi super fáciem meam.
4 Et máiestas Dómini ingréssa est templum per viam portæ, quæ respiciébat ad Oriéntem;
5 et elevávit me spíritus et introduxit me in atrium interius, et ecce repléta erat glória Dómini domus.

1 And he led me to the gate which looked toward the way of the east.
2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel entered along the way of the east. And his voice was like the voice of many waters. And the earth was resplendent before his majesty.
3 And I saw a vision in accord with the form that I had seen when he arrived so that he might destroy the city. And the form was in accord with the sight that I had seen beside the river Chebar. And I fell upon my face.
4 And the majesty of the Lord advanced into the temple, along the way of the gate which looked toward the east.
5 And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court. And behold, the house was filled with the glory of the Lord.

And the house of Israel, they and their kings, shall no longer defile my holy name by their fornications, and by the ruinous ways of their kings, and by exalted places.
8 They have fabricated their threshold beside my threshold, and their doorposts beside my doorposts. And there was a wall between me and them. And they defiled my holy name by the abominations which they committed. Because of this, I consumed them in my wrath.'

And you shall write in their sight, so that they may observe its entire description and its precepts, and so that they may accomplish them.

℟ Sustinúimus pacem, et non venit: quæsívimus bona, et ecce turbátio: cognóvimus, Dómine, peccáta nostra;

℟ We waited for peace, and it did not come; we sought good things, and behold trouble: we acknowledge, O Lord, our sins;

Albert, surnamed the Great on account of his singular learning, born at Lauingen on the Danube in Swabia, was diligently educated from boyhood. Departing from his homeland for the sake of his studies and staying at Padua, he sought to be enrolled in the Dominican Order, the fruitless opposition of his uncle notwithstanding, at the urging of Blessed Jordan, Master General of the Order of Preachers. Admitted among the brothers, dedicated to God in all things, he excelled in religious observance and devotion, burning with filial and most tender devotion toward the Blessed Virgin Mary. He so ordered the whole pattern of his life — by preceding study with prayer — that, having professed the apostolic religious life, he might become a fit minister for preaching the Word of God and procuring the salvation of souls. Soon sent to Cologne to complete his studies, he made such progress that he investigated and advanced almost all the secular sciences more diligently than any of his contemporaries; and from the fountain of the divine law, as Alexander IV testifies, he drank such healthful streams of doctrine that its fullness thrived in his breast.

That he might enrich others from the treasures of learning, he was appointed lector at Hildesheim, then at Freiburg, Regensburg, and Strasbourg. Drawing universal admiration upon himself, and having added distinction to the sacred faculty by his teaching at the renowned university of Paris, he was declared master of theology. Bringing the doctrines of the pagan philosophers back to the dictates of right reason, he more clearly demonstrated their coherence with the faith. He expounded wonderful things on the understanding of divine matters. How greatly he advanced all disciplines, especially the sacred ones, by his ardent genius and indefatigable study, is clearly shown by his very many writings in almost every branch of learning.

Distinguished by the examples of his religious life amid so many and so grave duties, he was elected Prior of the Teutonic Province by his brethren. Called to Anagni, he refuted before the Supreme Pontiff Alexander IV William, who had dared with impious boldness to attack the Mendicant Orders; who afterwards appointed him Bishop of Regensburg. Albert devoted himself entirely to the care of his flock, most diligently maintaining his habitual humility of character and love of poverty. Having resigned his office, he remained prompt and eager throughout Germany and neighboring regions for the labors of the episcopal order.

When the leaders of the Church were acting too negligently, or when the Apostles received the sleep of death, the devil came and oversowed those whom the Lord interprets as wicked children. But the question is raised: are these heretics, or Catholics who live badly? For wicked children can also be said to be heretics, because, having been generated from the same seed of the Gospel and the name of Christ, they are turned by perverse opinions to false doctrines.

Sed quod dicit eos in médio trítici seminátos, quasi vidéntur illi significári, qui uníus communiónis sunt. Verúmtamen quóniam Dóminus agrum ipsum, non Ecclésiam, sed hunc mundum interpretátus est: bene intelligúntur hærétici, quia non societáte uníus Ecclésiæ, vel uníus fídei, sed societáte solíus nóminis christiáni in hoc mundo permiscéntur bonis. At illi, qui in eádem fide mali sunt, pálea pótius quam zizánia reputántur: quia pálea étiam fundaméntum ipsum habet cum fruménto, radicémque commúnem.

But what he says that they were sown in the midst of the wheat, seems to signify those who belong to the same communion. Nevertheless, since the Lord interpreted the field itself, not as the Church, but as this world: those are rightly understood to be heretics, because they are mingled with the good in this world not by the fellowship of one Church, or of one faith, but only by the fellowship of the Christian name. But those who in the same faith are evil, are considered rather as chaff than as tares: because chaff also has its root together with the grain and a common foundation.

In illa plane sagéna, qua concludúntur et mali et boni pisces, non absúrde mali cathólici intelligúntur. Inter hæréticos et malos cathólicos hoc ínterest, quod hærétici falsa credunt: illi autem, vera credéntes, non vivunt ita ut credunt.

In that net, by which both bad and good fish are enclosed, the wicked Catholics are not unreasonably to be understood. For the sea is one thing, signifying more properly the world itself; the net is another, which appears to signify the communion of a single faith, or of a single Church. Between heretics and bad Catholics the difference is this: that heretics believe false things, while the latter, though believing what is true, do not live in accordance with what they believe.
