7 Dixítque ei ármiger suus: Fac ómnia, quæ placent ánimo tuo, perge quo cupis, et ero tecum ubicúmque volúeris.
8 Et ait Iónathas: Ecce nos transímus ad viros istos. Cumque apparuérimus eis,
9 si táliter locúti fúerint ad nos: Manéte donec veniámus ad vos; stemus in loco nostro nec ascendámus ad eos.
10 Si autem díxerint: Ascéndite ad nos; ascendámus, quia trádidit eos Dóminus in mánibus nostris: hoc erit nobis signum.

6 Then Jonathan said to the youth who bore his armor: 'Come, let us go across to the garrison of these uncircumcised. Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf, for it is not difficult for the Lord to save, whether by many or by few.'
7 And his armor bearer said to him: 'Do all that is pleasing to your soul. Go wherever you wish, and I will be with you wherever you wish.'
8 And Jonathan said: 'Behold, we will cross over to these men. And when we will be seen by them,'
9 if they have spoken to us in this way, 'Stay until we come to you,' let us stand still in our place, and not ascend to them.
10 But if they will say, 'Ascend to us,' let us ascend. For the Lord has delivered them into our hands. This will be the sign to us.
11 And so, both of them appeared before the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, 'See, the Hebrews have come out from the holes in which they had been hiding.'

13 Ascéndit autem Iónathas mánibus et pédibus reptans et ármiger eius post eum. Itaque álii cadébant ante Iónatham, álios ármiger eius interficiébat sequens eum.
14 Et facta est plaga prima, qua percússit Iónathas et ármiger eius, quasi vigínti virórum, in média parte iúgeri, quam par boum in die aráre consuévit.
15 Et factum est miráculum in castris per agros; sed et omnis pópulus statiónis eórum, qui íerant ad prædándum, obstúpuit, et conturbáta est terra, et áccidit quasi miráculum a Deo.

12 And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan and to his armor bearer, and they said, 'Ascend to us, and we will show you something.' And Jonathan said to his armor bearer: 'Let us ascend. Follow me. For the Lord has delivered them into the hands of Israel.'
13 Then Jonathan ascended, crawling on his hands and feet, and his armor bearer after him. And then, some fell before Jonathan, others his armor bearer killed as he was following him.
14 And the first slaughter was made when Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty of the men, in the midst of an area of land that a yoke of oxen would usually plow in a day.
15 And a miracle occurred in the camp, out in the fields. And all of the people of their garrison, who had gone out in order to plunder, were stupefied. And the earth trembled. And it happened as a miracle from God.

17 And Saul said to the people who were with him, 'Inquire and see who has gone out from us.' And when they had inquired, it was found that Jonathan and his armor bearer were not present.
18 And Saul said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ark of the God.' (For the ark of God was, in that day, with the sons of Israel in that place.)
19 And while Saul spoke to the priest, there arose a great tumult in the camp of the Philistines. And it was increasing, little by little, and it was being heard more clearly. And Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'
20 Then Saul, and all the people who were with him, cried out together, and they went to the place of the conflict. And behold, each one's sword had been turned against his neighbor, and there was a very great slaughter.

He came from Sicily to the general chapter at Assisi: from there he withdrew to the hermitage of Mount Paul in Aemilia, where he spent a long time in divine contemplations, fasts, and vigils. The first of his order, on account of the excellence of his learning, he lectured on sacred scripture at Bologna and elsewhere, and presided over the studies of his brethren. Non hæc ait beátus Evangelísta, quasi pietátem ullam efferátis et crudélibus Iudǽis tríbuat, sed ut osténdat stulte eos et imperíte excoláre cúlicem, et camélum deglutíre sicut a Christo dictum est. Gravíssima enim et immánia scélera pro níhilo dúcere comperiúntur: mínima vero et exília caute ádmodum ac sollícite obsérvant, suam utrobíque pandéntes inscítiam. Quod in promptu est osténdere. Ecce enim Christo interfécto sábbati honórem magni fáciunt, et incredíbili audácia, violáto legis auctóre, pietátem erga legem præ se ferunt.

The blessed Evangelist does not say these things as though attributing any piety to the cruel Jews, but to show that they strain out a gnat and swallow a camel foolishly and ignorantly, as was said by Christ. For they are found to regard the gravest and most monstrous crimes as nothing; yet in matters small and trivial they observe the utmost caution and solicitude, displaying in both their ignorance. And this is easy to show. Behold, for with Christ slain they make great account of the honor of the Sabbath, and with breathtaking audacity, having violated the author of the law, they make a show of reverence toward the law.

They pretend to observe chiefly the day of that great Sabbath, who had slain the Lord of the great day, and demand for themselves alone the grace that their legs be broken, contriving a destruction more bitter than death itself by intolerable pain upon those nearly already dead. The soldiers came, therefore, and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with him. The soldiers, complying with the petition of the Jews who were driven by a like fury of cruelty, break the legs of the two thieves, since they were found still alive. But when they found that Jesus had bowed his head and presumed that he had already breathed his last, they deemed it useless to break his legs; yet, since they still somewhat doubted that he was dead, they pierced his side with a lance, from which blood mixed with water gushed forth—which was in some manner the image and first-fruit of the mystic blessing and of holy Baptism.

From those things, moreover, that came to pass, the most wise Evangelist confirms to his hearers that he is the Christ who was foretold of old by the holy Scriptures; for what happened was in agreement with the divine oracles concerning him. For neither was his bone broken, and he was pierced through by the soldier's lance, according to the Scriptures. And he says that the disciple himself who bears witness to these things was a spectator of that event, and that he knows that his testimony is true, denoting himself by these words, and not another.
