18 et ait ad fílios Israël: Hæc dicit Dóminus Deus Israël: Ego edúxi Israël de Ægýpto, et érui vos de manu Ægyptiórum et de manu ómnium regum, qui affligébant vos.
19 Vos autem hódie proiecístis Deum vestrum, qui solus salvávit vos de univérsis malis et tribulatiónibus vestris, et dixístis: Nequáquam, sed regem constítue super nos. Nunc ergo state coram Dómino per tribus vestras et per famílias.
17 And Samuel called the people together, to the Lord at Mizpah.
18 And he said to the sons of Israel: ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: I led Israel away from Egypt, and I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all the kings who were afflicting you.

22 And after these things, they consulted the Lord as to whether he would soon arrive there. And the Lord responded, 'Behold, he is hidden at home.'
23 And so they ran and brought him there. And he stood in the midst of the people, and he was taller than the entire people, from the shoulders upward.
24 And Samuel said to all the people: 'Certainly, you see the one whom the Lord has chosen, that there is not anyone like him among all the people.' And all the people cried out and said, 'Long live the king!'

When they came to Jesus, therefore, and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; but one of those standing by, driving in a lance, opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water. Truly a great and unheard-of wonder, that from a lifeless body blood and water should flow. Nevertheless, the wisdom of God willed to commend to us in this deed a most great Sacrament — namely, the unity of himself and the Church. For a figure of this spiritual union preceded, when it is recounted that from the side of the sleeping Adam one of his ribs was taken, and from it Eve, the mother of all, was formed — she who was a type of the Church. The Holy Spirit then signified that there would be a true and spiritual Adam, who, fashioned by the power of the Paraclete, while he slept on the cross, would have formed from his side — with water and blood flowing forth — the Church as his beautiful bride, without wrinkle or blemish.

For these are indeed the sacraments of the Church, through which the whole Body of the Church is washed and sanctified. In the font of the water of regeneration, which is consecrated by the death of Christ, the soul is cleansed from the contagion of original sin. And in the blood of the Redeemer it is not only purged of every fault, but the entrance into the heavenly Kingdom is also opened to it. Both of these converge upon one effect, and neither can profit for salvation without the other: for without the sacrament of baptism and the forgiveness of sins, no one can receive the inheritance of future blessedness. This the holy mother Church confesses everywhere throughout the world, and it is confirmed by the manifold testimonies of the divine Scriptures. Moreover, he who saw water and blood flow from Christ bore witness, and his testimony is true. That man is indeed John the Apostle and Evangelist, who was loved with a particular love by the Lord.

Indeed these things were done that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: You shall not break a bone of him. For it had been commanded by the Lord to Moses that in the sacrificial Passover, at the celebration of the immolated lamb, not a single bone should be broken. But in the Lord Jesus, the most innocent Lamb, the truth of the figure was fulfilled. His legs were by no means broken, as were those of the two wicked men hanging with him; but only his side was opened, so that another Scripture might be fulfilled which says: They shall look upon him whom they have pierced. Furthermore, the Lord willed to retain in his own body the wounds' scars, so that they might serve both as an incentive of devotion for the elect and as an irrefutable testimony of damnation for the reprobate. Thus all things were consummated in Christ, proclaimed long before by the oracles of the Prophets, so that the Catholic faith might be fortified both in its own behalf and against the errors of heretics.
