6 And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that you have heard in the same way from the beginning, and in which you should walk.
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh. Such a one as this is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Be cautious for yourselves, lest you lose what you have accomplished, and so that, instead, you may receive a full reward.
9 Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son.

℟ Omnis pulchritúdo Dómini exaltáta est super sídera:

℟ All the beauty of the Lord is exalted above the stars:

John Baptist de la Salle, born of illustrious family at Rheims, showed even as a boy, by his conduct and deeds, signs that he was to be called to the Lord's portion and to be honored with the glory of holiness. As a young man he studied letters and philosophical disciplines at the Rheims Academy: at which time, although on account of his virtues of soul, his lively intellect, and his amiable manner he was dear to all, he nevertheless shrank from the company of his peers, so that, devoted to solitude, he might more freely attend to God. Long before enrolled in the clerical state, he was admitted among the canons of Rheims at the age of sixteen, and hastened to Paris to pursue theology at the Sorbonne, where he was received into the Sulpician seminary. But soon bereaved of his parents, he was compelled to return home and undertook to educate his brothers; which task, without meanwhile interrupting his studies of the sacred sciences, he carried out with the best fruit, as the outcome confirmed.

Having at last been ordained a priest, the faith and fervor of spirit with which he first offered Mass, with the same he continued to celebrate the sacred rites for his entire life. Meanwhile, burning with zeal for the salvation of souls, he devoted himself entirely to their benefit. He undertook the governance of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus, established for the education of girls; and he not only directed them most prudently but also defended them from destruction. He then turned his attention to instructing the boys of the common people in religion and good morals. And indeed for this purpose God had raised him up: namely, that by founding a new family of religious men in his Church, he might provide a permanent and effective means for the schools of boys, especially the poor. The men he had gathered to himself in this grave and arduous work he first received in his own house; then, having established them in a more suitable dwelling, he formed them excellently in his discipline by those laws and wise constitutions that were afterward confirmed by Benedict XIII. Out of humility of spirit and love of poverty he first renounced his canonry and distributed all his goods to the poor; and later, what he had several times tried in vain, he voluntarily laid down the governance of the institute he had founded. Yet, remitting nothing meanwhile of his solicitude for the brothers, and with the schools opened by him now in several places, he began to devote himself more intensely to God. See that you despise not one of these little ones, for their Angels always behold the face of my Father, and because I have come for their sake, and this is the will of my Father. He makes us more diligent in protecting and preserving the humble. You perceive what mighty walls he has raised for the protection of the lowly, and how great is his care and concern lest they be lost; both because he has decreed the severest punishments upon those who despise them, and because he promises the greatest reward to those who take care of them, confirming this both by his own example and by that of the Father.

The lamps in this place he calls the very dwelling of virginity and the purity of holiness; but the oil is benevolence, almsgiving, the help given to the needy. But while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. He shows again a rather long interval of time intervening, so as to lead the disciples away from the opinion that his kingdom was imminent; for this is what they hoped: and therefore he frequently recalls them from such hope. In addition, he also indicates that sleep is a kind of death. They slept, he says; but at midnight there was a cry: either to remain consistent with the same parable, or again to show that the Resurrection will take place at night. Paul also mentions the cry, saying: In command, in the voice of the Archangel, with the last trumpet he shall descend from heaven.

Let us therefore also imitate the Lord, and omit nothing for the sake of our brothers, even those things that seem too humble and lowly. But if our service is needed, however weak and abject indeed the one to be served may be, however arduous and full of labor the task may seem to us; may all these things, I pray, seem more bearable and easier for the sake of a brother's salvation. For God has shown the soul to be worthy of such great care and concern that he did not even spare his own Son.
