18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun: * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom:
18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way, * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven:
18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit: * neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.
18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.
18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts: * the precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.
18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
18:11 Desirable beyond gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.
18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord: * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

1 Hanc ecce vobis, caríssimi, secúndam scribo epístolam, in quibus vestram éxcito in commonitióne sincéram mentem:
2 ut mémores sitis eórum, quæ prædíxi, verbórum, a sanctis prophétis et apostolórum vestrórum, præceptórum Dómini et Salvatóris.
3 Hoc primum sciéntes, quod vénient in novíssimis diébus in deceptióne illusóres, iuxta próprias concupiscéntias ambulántes,
4 dicéntes: Ubi est promíssio, aut advéntus eius? ex quo enim patres dormiérunt, ómnia sic perséverant ab inítio creatúræ.
5 Latet enim eos hoc voléntes, quod cæli erant prius, et terra de aqua, et per aquam consístens Dei verbo:
6 per quæ, ille tunc mundus aqua inundátus, périit.
7 Cæli autem, qui nunc sunt, et terra eódem verbo repósiti sunt, igni reserváti in diem iudícii, et perditiónis impiórum hóminum.

1 Consider, most beloved, this second epistle which I am writing to you, in which I stir up, by admonition, your sincere mind,
2 so that you may be mindful of those words that I preached to you from the holy prophets, and of the precepts of the Apostles of your Lord and Savior.
3 Know this first: that in the last days there will arrive deceitful mockers, walking according to their own desires,
4 saying: 'Where is his promise or his advent? For from the time that the fathers have slept, all things have continued just as they were from the beginning of creation.'
5 But they willfully ignore this: that the heavens existed first, and that the earth, from water and through water, was established by the Word of God.
6 By water, the former world then, having been inundated with water, perished.
7 But the heavens and the earth that exist now were restored by the same Word, being reserved unto fire on the day of judgment, and unto the perdition of impious men.

9 Non tardat Dóminus promissiónem suam, sicut quidam exístimant: sed patiénter agit propter vos, nolens áliquos períre, sed omnes ad pœniténtiam revérti.
10 Advéniet autem dies Dómini ut fur: in quo cæli magno ímpetu tránsient, eleménta vero calóre solvéntur, terra autem et quæ in ipsa sunt ópera, exuréntur.
11 Cum ígitur hæc ómnia dissolvénda sunt, quales opórtet vos esse in sanctis conversatiónibus, et pietátibus,
12 exspectántes, et properántes in advéntum diéi Dómini, per quem cæli ardéntes solvéntur, et eleménta ignis ardóre tabéscent?
13 Novos vero cælos, et novam terram secúndum promíssa ipsíus exspectámus, in quibus iustítia hábitat.

8 Yet truly, let this one thing not escape notice, most beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.
9 The Lord is not delaying his promise, as some imagine, but he does act patiently for your sake, not wanting anyone to perish, but wanting all to be turned back to penance.
10 Then the day of the Lord shall arrive like a thief. On that day, the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and truly the elements shall be dissolved with heat; then the earth, and the works that are within it, shall be completely burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of people ought you to be? In behavior and in piety, be holy,
12 waiting for and hurrying toward the advent of the day of the Lord, by which the burning heavens shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt from the heat of the fire.
13 Yet truly, in accord with his promises, we are looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, in which justice lives.

℟ Omnis pulchritúdo Dómini exaltáta est super sídera:

℟ All the beauty of the Lord is exalted above the stars:

Spécies eius in núbibus cæli, et nomen eius in ætérnum pérmanet, allelúia.

His glory is in the clouds of heaven, and his name endures for ever, alleluia.

14 Therefore, most beloved, while awaiting these things, be diligent, so that you may be found to be immaculate and unassailable before him, in peace;
15 and let the longsuffering of our Lord be considered salvation, as also our most beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,
16 just as he also spoke in all of his epistles about these things. In these, there are certain things which are difficult to understand, which the unlearned and the unsteady distort, as they also do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17 But since you, brothers, know these things beforehand, be cautious, lest by being drawn into the error of the foolish, you may fall away from your own steadfastness.
18 Yet truly, increase in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and in the day of eternity. Amen.

Quod ítaque Redemptóris nostri conspícuum fuit, in sacraménta transívit: et ut fides excelléntior esset ac fírmior, visióni doctrína succéssit, cuius auctoritátem supérnis illumináta rádiis credéntium corda sequeréntur. Hanc fidem ascensióne Dómini auctam, et Spíritus Sancti múnere roborátam, non víncula, non cárceres, non exsília, non fames, non ignis, non laniátus ferárum, nec exquisíta persequéntium crudelitátibus supplícia terruérunt. Pro hac fide per univérsum mundum non solum viri, sed étiam féminæ: nec tantum impúbes púeri, sed étiam téneræ vírgines usque ad effusiónem sui sánguinis decertárunt. Hæc fides dæmónia eiécit, ægritúdines dépulit, mórtuos suscitávit.

And so even the blessed Apostles themselves, who had been confirmed by so many miracles, instructed by so many discourses, yet had trembled at the cruelty of the Lord's Passion and had not accepted the truth of his Resurrection without hesitation, so greatly profited from the Lord's Ascension that whatever had previously brought them fear was turned into joy. For they had directed the whole contemplation of their minds to the divinity of him sitting at the right hand of the Father: and they were no longer delayed by the obstacle of bodily sight from fixing the gaze of the mind upon that which had neither been absent from the Father by descending, nor departed from the disciples by ascending. Then, therefore, beloved, the Son of Man, the Son of God, became known more excellently and more sacredly when he withdrew into the glory of the paternal majesty: and in an ineffable manner he began to be more present in divinity, who had become more distant in humanity.

Then a more instructed faith began to draw near with the step of the mind to the Son equal to the Father, and no longer to need the handling of the bodily substance in Christ, by which he is less than the Father: since, with the nature of the glorified body remaining, the faith of believers was called to that point where the Only-Begotten, equal to the Father, might be touched not with a carnal hand but with a spiritual understanding. Hence it is that, after his Resurrection, when the person of the Church, represented by Mary Magdalene, was hastening to touch him, the Lord says to her: Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father: that is, I do not wish you to come to me in a bodily manner, nor to know me by the sense of flesh; I defer you to higher things, I prepare greater things for you: when I have ascended to the Father, then you will touch me more perfectly and truly, as you grasp what you do not touch, and believe what you do not see.

For in order that the multitude of believers might grow in faith, it needed to be nourished by miracles; just as when we plant saplings, we water them until we see that they have already taken root in the earth; and once they have fixed their roots, the watering will cease. Hence it is that Paul says: Tongues are a sign not for the faithful, but for unbelievers.

We have these signs and mighty deeds, which we ought to consider still more closely. For the holy Church daily does spiritually what the Apostles then did bodily. For when her priests lay hands on believers through the grace of exorcism and forbid evil spirits to dwell in their minds, what else do they do but cast out demons? And all the faithful who have already abandoned the secular words of the old life, and proclaim the holy mysteries, who recount the praises and the power of their Creator as best they can — what else do they do but speak in new tongues? When through their good exhortations they remove malice from the hearts of others, they take up serpents.

And while they are listening to pestilential suggestions, but are not at all drawn to wicked action, what they drink is indeed deadly, yet it will not harm them. When they see their neighbors grow weak in good work, and with all their strength rush to their aid and by the example of their own conduct strengthen the lives of those who waver in their own efforts: what else are they doing but laying their hands upon the sick, that they may be healed? These miracles are surely all the greater in that they are spiritual: they are all the greater in that through them it is not bodies but souls that are raised up.
