3 Know this first: that in the last days there will arrive deceitful mockers, walking according to their own desires,

5 But they willfully ignore this: that the heavens existed first, and that the earth, from water and through water, was established by the Word of God.

10 Then the day of the Lord shall arrive like a thief. On that day, the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and truly the elements shall be dissolved with heat; then the earth, and the works that are within it, shall be completely burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of people ought you to be? In behavior and in piety, be holy,
12 waiting for and hurrying toward the advent of the day of the Lord, by which the burning heavens shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt from the heat of the fire.
13 Yet truly, in accord with his promises, we are looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, in which justice lives.

Bernardine Albizesca, born of a noble Sienese family, gave clear signs of holiness from the beginning of his youth; for, honestly educated by pious parents, neglecting childish games, amid his first studies of grammar he devoted his mind to works of piety, given especially to fasting, prayer, and the veneration of the most Blessed Virgin. Indeed, he was conspicuous for mercy toward the poor. And in order to cultivate all these things the better as time went on, he wished to be enrolled among those who serve God in Siena in the hospital of Blessed Mary of the Scala, from which many men renowned for holiness have come forth. There, by bodily mortification and the care of the sick, while a dreadful pestilence was raging, he exercised himself with incredible charity. Among his other virtues, he preserved chastity most holily, despite his distinguished appearance that resisted it, so that in his presence no one ever, not even the most shameless, dared to utter an immodest word.

Afflicted by a grave illness, which he endured with the utmost patience for four months, he recovered at length and began to deliberate about embracing the religious life. To prepare the way for himself, he rented a small dwelling at the edge of the city; withdrawing into it, he led a life of the greatest austerity in every respect, praying to God without ceasing that he might be shown what course he ought to follow. By divine providence it came about that he chose above all others the Order of Blessed Francis, in which he excelled in humility, patience, and the other virtues of a man of religion. When the superior of the monastery took note of this, and had already come to know Bernardine's learning and mastery of the sacred Scriptures, he laid upon him the burden of preaching. Having accepted this office in all humility, yet recognizing himself to be less than adequate on account of the weakness and hoarseness of his voice, he implored the help of God, and was freed from that impediment not without a miracle.

By which means it came about that distinguished cities demanded him as their bishop from the Supreme Pontiff; which office he declined with unconquerable humility most steadfastly. Finally, the man of God, exhausted by immense labors, having brought forth many great miracles, and having also written books devoutly and learnedly, after having lived sixty-six years, rested in a blessed end in the city of Aquila in the Vestini. Nicholas V, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled him, shining daily with new signs, in the number of the Saints six years after his death.

Now the signs that will follow those who believe are these: In my name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; they will lay hands upon the sick, and they will be well. Surely, my brethren, because you do not perform these signs, you do not believe? But these signs were necessary at the beginning of the Church. For in order that the multitude of believers might grow in faith, it needed to be nourished by miracles; just as when we plant saplings, we water them until we see that they have already taken root in the earth; and once they have fixed their roots, the watering will cease. Hence it is that Paul says: Tongues are a sign not for the faithful, but for unbelievers.

And all the faithful who have already abandoned the secular words of the old life, and proclaim the holy mysteries, who recount the praises and the power of their Creator as best they can — what else do they do but speak in new tongues? When through their good exhortations they remove malice from the hearts of others, they take up serpents.

When they see their neighbors grow weak in good work, and with all their strength rush to their aid and by the example of their own conduct strengthen the lives of those who waver in their own efforts: what else are they doing but laying their hands upon the sick, that they may be healed? These miracles are surely all the greater in that they are spiritual: they are all the greater in that through them it is not bodies but souls that are raised up.
