26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.

On a certain day she came, as was her custom, and her venerable brother came down to her with his disciples; and they spent the whole day in the praises of God and sacred conversation; and when the darkness of night was already gathering, they took food together. And while they were still sitting at table, and the hour prolonged itself amid holy discourse, that consecrated woman, his sister, begged him, saying: I pray you, do not leave me tonight, that until morning we may speak of the joys of the heavenly life. But he replied: What are you saying, sister? On no account can I remain outside my cell. The sky at that time was so serene that not a single cloud appeared in the air. But that consecrated woman, when she heard the refusing words of her brother, placed her head on her hands and bowed down to pray to the almighty Lord. And when she raised her head from the table, so great a flash of lightning and crack of thunder broke forth, and so great a flood of rain poured down, that neither the venerable Benedict nor the brethren who were with him could move a foot outside the threshold of the place where they were sitting.

For the consecrated woman, lowering her head into her hands, had poured a river of tears upon the table, through which she drew the clear air to rain. Nor did that flood of rain follow long after her prayer; but the harmony between prayer and flood was such that even as she raised her head from the table with the thunder, one and the same moment was both the raising of her head and the descent of the rain. Then the man of God, amid lightning and thunder and the flooding of a mighty rain, seeing that he could not return to the monastery, began to complain in sorrow, saying: May almighty God pardon you, sister: what have you done? She answered him: Behold, I begged you and you were unwilling to hear me; I prayed to my God and he heard me. Now therefore, if you can, go out and, leaving me, return to the monastery. But he, unable to go out of doors, who had been unwilling to remain of his own choice, remained against his will. And so it came to pass that they spent the whole night in vigil, and through the sacred conversations of the spiritual life refreshed one another in mutual exchange.

Quis vero patrisfamílias similitúdinem réctius tenet, quam Cónditor noster, qui regit quos cóndidit, et eléctos suos sic in hoc mundo póssidet, quasi subiéctos dóminus in domo? Qui habet víneam, universálem scílicet Ecclésiam, quæ ab Abel iusto usque ad últimum eléctum, qui in fine mundi nascitúrus est, quot Sanctos prótulit, quasi tot pálmites misit.

The kingdom of heaven is said to be like a householder who hires laborers to cultivate his vineyard. Who more rightly holds the likeness of the householder than our Creator, who governs those he has made, and possesses his chosen ones in this world as a lord his subjects in a house? He has a vineyard, namely the universal Church, which, from righteous Abel to the last of the elect who is yet to be born at the end of the world, has sent forth as many shoots as it has brought forth saints.

This householder, then, goes out at dawn, at the third hour, the sixth, the ninth, and the eleventh hour to hire workers for his vineyard: because from the beginning of this world to its end he never ceases to gather preachers for the instruction of his faithful people. For the morning of the world extended from Adam to Noah; the third hour from Noah to Abraham; the sixth from Abraham to Moses; the ninth from Moses to the coming of the Lord; and the eleventh from the coming of the Lord to the end of the world. In this last hour the holy Apostles were sent as preachers, who, though they came late, received their full reward.

℟ Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil:

In order, then, to instruct his people, the Lord never ceased to send laborers to cultivate his vineyard, as it were: for both first through the Fathers, and afterward through the Teachers of the Law and the Prophets, and finally through the Apostles, as he cultivated the character of his people, he labored, as it were, through workers in the cultivation of the vineyard. Although, at whatever level or measure, whoever stood forth as a faithful preacher of righteous action was a worker in this vineyard. The worker at dawn, at the third, sixth, and ninth hour, represents that ancient Hebrew people: who in their chosen ones, from the very beginning of the world, while they strove to worship God with right faith, never ceased, as it were, to labor in the cultivation of the vineyard. But at the eleventh hour the Gentiles are called, to whom it is also said: Why do you stand here idle all day?

℟ Ubi est Abel frater tuus? dixit Dóminus ad Cain. Néscio, Dómine, numquid custos fratris mei sum ego? Et dixit ad eum: Quid fecísti?

℟ Where is your brother Abel? said the Lord to Cain. I do not know, O Lord, am I my brother's keeper? And he said to him: What have you done?

Ecce vox sánguinis fratris tui Abel clamat ad me de terra.

Behold, the voice of your brother Abel's blood cries out to me from the earth.
