Hymnus

Summæ Parens cleméntiæ,
Mundi regis qui máchinam,
Uníus et substántiæ,
Trinúsque persónis Deus:

Nostros pius cum cánticis
Fletus benígne súscipe:
Ut corde puro sórdium
Te perfruámur lárgius.

Lumbos, iecúrque mórbidum
Flammis adúre cóngruis,
Accíncti ut artus éxcubent,
Luxu remóto péssimo.

Quicúmque ut horas nóctium
Nunc concinéndo rúmpimus,
Ditémur omnes áffatim
Donis beátæ pátriæ.

Præsta, Pater piíssime,
Patríque compar Únice,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito
Regnans per omne sǽculum.
Amen.

Great God of boundless mercy hear;
Thou Ruler of this earthly sphere;
In substance one, in persons three,
Dread Trinity in Unity!

Do thou in love accept our lays
Of mingled penitence and praise;
And set our hearts from error free,
More fully to rejoice in thee.

Our reins and hearts in pity heal,
And with thy chastening fires anneal;
Gird Thou our loins, each passion quell,
And every harmful lust expel.

Now as our anthems, upward borne,
Awake the silence of the morn,
Enrich us with thy gifts of grace,
From heaven, thy blissful dwelling-place!

Hear thou our prayer, Almighty King!
Hear thou our praises, while we sing,
Adoring with the heavenly host,
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.

104:6 You offspring of Abraham his servant: * you sons of Jacob, his elect.
104:7 He is the Lord our God: * his judgments are throughout the entire earth.
104:8 He has remembered his covenant for all ages: * the word that he entrusted to a thousand generations,
104:9 which he assigned to Abraham: * and his oath to Isaac:

104:11 saying: To you I will give the land of Canaan, * the allotment of your inheritance.

104:18 They humbled his feet in shackles; the iron pierced his soul, * until his word arrived.

104:21 He established him as master of his house: * and ruler of all his possessions:
104:22 so that he might instruct his princes as himself: * and teach his elders prudence.

104:29 Convértit aquas eórum in sánguinem: * et occídit pisces eórum.
104:30 Édidit terra eórum ranas: * in penetrálibus regum ipsórum.
104:31 Dixit, et venit cœnomyía: * et cínifes in ómnibus fínibus eórum.
104:32 Pósuit plúvias eórum grándinem: * ignem comburéntem in terra ipsórum.

104:28 He sent darkness and made it conceal: * and he did not afflict them with his speech.
104:29 He turned their waters into blood: * and he slaughtered their fish.
104:30 Their land brought forth frogs: * even in the inner chambers of their kings.
104:31 He spoke, and there came forth common flies: * and gnats, in every region.
104:32 He gave them a shower of hail: * and a burning fire, in the same land.
104:33 And he struck their vineyards and their fig trees: * and he crushed the trees of their region.
104:34 He spoke, and the locust came forth, and the caterpillar, * of which there was no number:
104:35 And it devoured all the grass in their land: * and it consumed all the fruit of their land.
104:36 And he struck all the first-born in their land: * the first-fruits of all their labor.
104:37 And he led them out with silver and gold: * and there was not an infirm one among their tribes.
104:38 Egypt was joyful at their departure: * for the fear of them lay heavy upon them.
104:39 He spread a cloud for their protection: * and a fire, to give them light through the night.
104:40 They petitioned, and the quail came: * and he satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
104:41 He ruptured the rock and the waters flowed: * rivers gushed in the dry land;
104:42 For he had called to mind his holy word: * which he kept near to his servant Abraham.
104:43 And he led forth his people in exultation, * and his elect in rejoicing.
104:44 And he gave them the regions of the Gentiles: * and they possessed the labors of the peoples:
104:45 So that they might observe his justifications, * and inquire about his law.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Memor fuit Dóminus verbi sancti sui.

The Lord was mindful of his holy word.

Quod locútus est ad Ábraham, púerum suum.

Which he spoke to Abraham, his servant.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

Absolutio. Hear us, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on your servants: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.

Benedictio. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

De Epístola ad Ephésios

From the Epistle to the Ephesians

Eph 6:1-4

Eph 6:1-4

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is just.
2 Honor your father and your mother. This is the first commandment with a promise:
3 so that it may be well with you, and so that you may have a long life upon the earth.
4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but educate them with the discipline and correction of the Lord.

Misericórdiam et iudícium cantábo tibi, Dómine:

I will sing of mercy and judgment to you, O Lord:

Psallam et intéllegam in via immaculáta, quando vénies ad me.

I will sing and understand in the blameless way, when you will come to me.

Perambulábam in innocéntia cordis mei, in médio domus meæ.

I walked in the innocence of my heart, in the midst of my house.

Psallam et intéllegam in via immaculáta, quando vénies ad me.

I will sing and understand in the blameless way, when you will come to me.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.

Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Eph 6:5-9

Eph 6:5-9

8 sciéntes quóniam unusquísque quodcúmque fécerit bonum, hoc recípiet a Dómino, sive servus, sive liber.

5 Servants, be obedient to your lords according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the simplicity of your heart, as to Christ. 6 Do not serve only when seen, as if to please men, but act as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. 7 Serve with good will, as to the Lord, and not to men. 8 For you know that whatever good each one will do, the same will he receive from the Lord, whether he is servant or free. 9 And you, lords, act similarly toward them, setting aside threats, knowing that the Lord of both you and them is in heaven.

O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you:

Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.

For you do not spurn, O God, the prayers of the poor.

Fiant aures tuæ intendéntes in oratiónem servi tui.

Let your ears be attentive to the prayer of your servant.

Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.

For you do not spurn, O God, the prayers of the poor.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Eph 6:10-13

Eph 6:10-13

10 Concerning the rest, brothers, be strengthened in the Lord, by the power of his virtue. 11 Be clothed in the armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the treachery of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the directors of this world of darkness. 13 Because of this, take up the armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand the evil day and remain perfect in all things.

Velóciter exáudi me, Deus,

Hear me speedily, O God,

For my days have failed like smoke:
But you are the same, and your years will not fail.

Dies mei sicut umbra declinavérunt, et ego sicut fœnum árui.

My days have declined like a shadow, and I have withered like grass.

Quia defecérunt sicut fumus dies mei.

For my days have failed like smoke.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

105:16 And they provoked Moses in the camp: * and Aaron, the holy one of the Lord.
105:17 The earth opened and swallowed Dathan: * and it covered the congregation of Abiram.
105:18 And a fire broke out in their congregation: * a flame burned up the sinners.
105:19 And they fashioned a calf at Horeb, * and they adored a graven image.
105:20 And they exchanged their glory * for the likeness of a calf that eats hay.
105:21 They forgot God, who saved them, * who did great things in Egypt, wonders in the land of Ham, and terrible things at the Red Sea.
105:23 And he said that he would destroy them: * yet Moses, his elect, stood firm before him in the breach,
105:24 in order to avert his wrath, lest he destroy them: * and they held the desirable land to be nothing.
105:25 They did not trust in his word, and they murmured in their tabernacles: * they did not heed the voice of the Lord.
105:26 And he lifted up his hand over them: * in order to prostrate them in the desert:
105:27 and in order to cast their offspring among the nations: * and to scatter them among the regions.
105:28 And they were initiated into Baal of Peor: * and they ate the sacrifices of the dead.
105:29 And they provoked him with their inventions: * and ruination was multiplied in them.
105:30 Then Phinehas stood up and placated him: * and so the violent disturbance ceased.
105:31 And it was reputed to him unto justice: * from generation to generation, even forever.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

105:32 And they provoked him at the Waters of Contradiction: * and Moses was afflicted because of them,
105:33 for they exasperated his spirit: * and so he divided them with his lips.
105:35 And they were mixed among the Gentiles, and they learned their works; and they served their graven images: * and it became a scandal to them.
105:37 And they sacrificed their sons, * and their daughters, to demons.
105:38 And they shed innocent blood: * the blood of their sons and of their daughters, which they sacrificed to the graven images of Canaan.
105:39 And the land was infected with bloodshed, and was contaminated with their works: * and they fornicated according to their own inventions.
105:40 And the Lord became furiously angry with his people: * and he abhorred his inheritance.
105:41 And he handed them over into the hands of the nations: * and those who hated them held dominion over them.
105:42 And their enemies afflicted them, and they were humbled under their hands: * many times he delivered them.
105:43 But they provoked him with their counsel: * and they were brought low by their iniquities.
105:44 And he saw, when they were in tribulation: * and he heard their prayer.
105:45 And he was mindful of his covenant: * and he repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
105:46 And he provided for them with mercies * in the sight of all those who had seized them.
105:47 Save us, O Lord our God: * and gather us from the nations:
105:47 That we may give thanks to your holy name: * and glory in your praise.

Petrus Nolascus, Recáudi prope Carcasonam in Gállia nobili genere natus, singulari erga próximum caritate excelluit. Adoléscens paréntibus orbatus, Albigensium hæresim, quæ tunc in Gállia grassabátur, éxsecrans, divéndito patrimonio, in Hispániam secessit; et apud beátam Vírginem montis Serráti votum, quo pridem se obstrinxerat, exsolvit.

Peter Nolasco, born of a noble family at Recaud near Carcassonne in France, excelled in singular charity toward his neighbor. A presage of this virtue was the fact that while he was still an infant wailing in the cradle, a swarm of bees flew to him and built a honeycomb of wax in his right hand. Orphaned as a young man and abhorring the Albigensian heresy that was then spreading in France, he sold his patrimony and withdrew to Spain; and at the shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Montserrat he fulfilled the vow by which he had previously bound himself. Then, going to Barcelona, when he had spent all his money in redeeming faithful Christians from the bondage of enemies, he kept saying that he wished to sell himself for their liberation, or to be substituted in their chains.

Notas mihi fecísti, Dómine, vias vitæ:

You have made known to me, O Lord, the ways of life:

Adimplébis me lætítia cum vultu tuo: delectatiónes in déxtera tua usque in finem.

You will fill me with joy with your countenance: at your right hand are delights evermore.

Tu es qui restítues hereditátem meam mihi.

You are the one who will restore my inheritance to me.

Adimplébis me lætítia cum vultu tuo: delectatiónes in déxtera tua usque in finem.

You will fill me with joy with your countenance: at your right hand are delights evermore.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Quam gratum Deo fúerit hoc sancti viri desidérium, súbsequens declarávit eventus; nam noctu oranti, et de Christianórum in captivitáte degéntium subsidio multa animo volvénti beáta Virgo apparens, Fílio suo sibíque acceptíssimum fore suggessit, si ad sui honórem religiosórum ordo instituerétur, quibus præcipue esset cura captivos ab infidelium tyrannide liberare. Huic cælésti mónito íllico obtemperans, una cum sancto Raymundo de Péñafort, et Iacobo primo, rege Aragoniæ, de eádem re a Dei Genitrice ipsa nocte præmónitis, religiónem beátæ Maríæ de Mercede redemptiónis captivórum instituit; sodálibus suis quarto voto obstrictis, manéndi in pignus sub paganórum potestate, si pro Christianórum liberatióne opus fúerit.

How acceptable to God was this holy man's desire, the subsequent event declared; for one night, as he was at prayer and pondering deeply in his heart the relief of the Christians languishing in captivity, the Blessed Virgin appeared and suggested that it would be most pleasing to her Son and to herself if a religious order were founded in her honor, whose special charge it would be to free captives from the tyranny of unbelievers. Obeying at once this heavenly admonition, together with Saint Raymond of Peñafort and James the First, king of Aragon — who had been forewarned by the Mother of God herself about the same thing that same night — he founded the Order of the Blessed Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Captives, with his companions bound by a fourth vow of remaining as a pledge in the power of the pagans, if need be for the liberation of Christians.

Díligam te, Dómine, virtus mea: Dóminus firmaméntum meum,

I will love you, O Lord, my strength; the Lord is my firm foundation,

Et refúgium meum.

And my refuge.

Liberátor meus, Deus meus, adiútor meus.

My deliverer, my God, my helper.

Et refúgium meum.

And my refuge.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Having made the vow of virginity, he preserved his chastity spotlessly throughout his life. He shone wonderfully in patience, humility, abstinence, and the other virtues. Distinguished by the gift of prophecy, he foretold the future; among his predictions, the most celebrated is that King James would conquer Valencia, then occupied by the Moors, having first received from him an assurance of victory to be obtained. He was refreshed by the frequent apparition of the Guardian Angel and of the Virgin Mother of God. At last, worn out by old age, and made aware of his approaching death, he fell ill; and, refreshed by the holy sacraments and having exhorted his brethren to charity toward captives, he was devoutly reciting the Psalm, I will give praise to you, O Lord, with my whole heart, and at those words, The Lord has sent redemption to his people, he gave up his spirit to God at midnight on the Vigil of the Lord's Nativity, in the year twelve hundred and fifty-six. Pope Alexander VII extended his feast to the universal Church.

Dómini est terra, et plenitúdo eius:

The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof:

Orbis terrárum, et univérsi qui hábitant in eo.

The world, and all who dwell in it.

Ipse super mária fundávit eam, et super flúmina præparávit illam.

He himself has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the rivers.

Orbis terrárum, et univérsi qui hábitant in eo.

The world, and all who dwell in it.

Amen.

106:3 From the rising of the sun and its setting: * from the north and from the sea.
106:4 They wandered in solitude in a waterless place: * they did not find the way to a city of habitation.
106:5 Hungry and thirsty: * their soul fainted within them.
106:6 And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation: * and he rescued them from their necessity.
106:7 And he led them in the right way: * that they might go forth to a city of habitation.
106:8 Let them confess to the Lord his mercies: * and his wonders to the sons of men.
106:9 For he has satisfied the empty soul: * and the hungry soul he has filled with good things.
106:10 Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: * shackled in poverty and in iron.
106:11 For they had provoked the words of God: * and had spurned the counsel of the Most High.
106:12 And their heart was brought low with hardships: * they were weakened, and there was no one to help them.
106:13 And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation: * and he freed them from their distress.
106:14 And he led them out of darkness and the shadow of death: * and he broke apart their chains.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

106:21 Let them confess to the Lord his mercies: * and his wonders to the sons of men.
106:22 And let them offer sacrifice with the sacrifice of praise: * and declare his works in exultation.

Absolutio. A vínculis peccatórum nostrórum absólvat nos omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus.

Absolutio. May the almighty and merciful Lord absolve us from the bonds of our sins.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio.

Benedictio. May he bless us who lives and reigns without end.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 8:1-13

Matt 8:1-13

At that time: When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him: and behold, a leper came and worshipped him. And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Jerome, Priest

Liber 1 Comment. in cap. 8 Matth.

Liber 1 Comment. in cap. 8 Matth.

As the Lord came down from the mountain, the crowds met him, because they had not been able to ascend to the higher places. And the first to meet him was a leper; for one who had leprosy could not yet hear the Lord's manifold discourse on the mountain. And it is to be noted that this man was the first to be cured in a special way; the second was the centurion's servant; the third was Peter's mother-in-law, burning with fever in Capernaum; and the fourth were those who were brought to him tormented by a demon, whose spirits he drove out by a word, when he also healed all who were ill.

Ad te, Dómine, levávi ánimam meam:

To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul:

Deus meus, in te confído, non erubéscam.

O my God, in you I trust, let me not be put to shame.

Custódi ánimam meam, et éripe me.

Guard my soul, and deliver me.

Deus meus, in te confído, non erubéscam.

O my God, in you I trust, let me not be put to shame.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

Dómine, si vis, potes me mundáre.

And behold, a leper came to him and worshipped him, saying. Rightly after the preaching and teaching an occasion for a sign is offered, so that through the power of the miracle the sermon previously delivered may be confirmed before the hearers. Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. He who asks about the will does not doubt the power. And Jesus stretching out his hand touched him, saying: I will; be made clean. As the Lord stretched out his hand, leprosy immediately fled. And at the same time consider how humble and without boasting his reply was. The man had said, If you will; the Lord replied, I will. The man had prefaced it: You can make me clean; the Lord joins to it and says, Be made clean. Therefore, contrary to what most of the Latins think, the words are not to be joined together and read, I will to cleanse; but separately, so that he first says, I will; then gives the command, Be made clean.

Duo Séraphim clamábant alter ad álterum:

Two Seraphim cried out one to the other:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts: * all the earth is filled with his glory.

For there are Three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these Three are One.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth.

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.

Amen.

Plena est omnis terra glória eius.

All the earth is filled with his glory.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

Reading 9

And Jesus said to him: See that you tell no one. And indeed what need was there to proclaim in words what the body openly displayed? But go, show yourself to the priest. He sends him to the priest for various reasons: first, for the sake of humility, so that he might appear to show honor to the priests. For it had been commanded by the Law that those who had been cleansed of leprosy should offer gifts to the priests. Then, so that the priests, seeing the leper cleansed, might either believe in the Savior or not: if they believed, they would be saved; if they did not believe, they would be without excuse. And at the same time, lest he be seen to transgress the Law, which they were constantly charging against him.
