22 And he instructed me, and he spoke to me and said: Daniel, now I have come forth to teach you and to help you understand.
23 At the beginning of your prayers, the message came forth, yet I have come to explain it to you because you are a man who is seeking. Therefore, take heed of the word and understand the vision.
24 Seventy weeks of years are concentrated on your people and on your holy city, so that transgression shall be finished, and sin shall reach an end, and iniquity shall be wiped away, and so that everlasting justice shall be brought in, and vision and prophecy shall be fulfilled, and the Saint of saints shall be anointed.

℟ Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

26 And after sixty-two weeks of years, the Christ leader will be slain. And the people who have denied him will not be his. And the people, when their leader arrives, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will be desolation, and after the end of the war the appointed desolation.
27 But he will confirm a covenant with many for one week of years; and for half of the week of years, victim and sacrifice will nearly cease; but there will be in the temple the abomination of desolation, and until the consummation and the end, the desolation will endure.

Reading 4

Silvester, born at Osimo in Picenum of a noble family, immediately adorned his boyhood years wonderfully with letters and good morals. Sent as a youth to Bologna by his father for the study of jurisprudence, when, admonished by God, he had applied himself to sacred letters, he incurred his father's displeasure, which he bore with equanimity for a full ten years. By reason of his outstanding virtue, he was chosen as a fellow in honor by the canons of the cathedral church of Osimo; in which office he aided the people by his sermons, example, and preaching.

℟ The Lord made him honorable, and guarded him from his enemies, and protected him from those who would lead him astray:

Meanwhile, with frequent prayer and assiduous meditation on heavenly things, often bathed in tears and sometimes drawn in spirit away from the senses, he was accustomed to unite himself to God. Held in great honor by leading men, by those most renowned for holiness, and by four Supreme Pontiffs, he thought so humbly of himself that he both called himself and considered himself the least of all. He refused the bishopric of Vienna once, a second time, and a third time. Most obedient to his superiors, he was ready at their slightest sign to leave or undertake anything, even at risk to his health and life. By voluntary self-mortification he perpetually guarded his chastity. At last at Freiburg in Switzerland, where he had labored most for the glory of God and the salvation of souls in the last years of his life, he departed to God on the twenty-first day of December in the year one thousand five hundred and ninety-seven, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. This strenuous champion of Catholic truth, Pope Pius the Ninth enriched with the honors of the Blessed in heaven; and Pope Pius the Eleventh, resplendent with new signs, enrolled him in the number of the Saints in the jubilee year, and at the same time declared him Doctor of the universal Church.

But the envious devil strove to disturb his monks with various terrors, attacking the doors of the monastery by night in a hostile manner. But the man of God so repressed the enemy's assault that the monks were more confirmed in the holy way of life and came to know their father's holiness. He shone with the spirit of prophecy and other gifts. As he always preserved these with deep humility, so he drew upon himself the devil's envy; cast headlong down a stairway of the oratory by him, and on the point of being killed, he was restored to safety by the most swift assistance of the Virgin. He commended this benefit by a perpetual and singular devotion toward her up to the very last breath of his life, which, at nearly ninety years of age, renowned for holiness and miracles, he rendered to God in the year of salvation one thousand two hundred and sixty-seven, on the sixth day before the Kalends of December. Leo XIII, Supreme Pontiff, extended his Office and Mass to the universal Church.

Great confidence! Peter was a fisherman; he had not been wealthy; he earned his food by hand and by craft. And yet he speaks with confidence: We have left behind all things. And because it is not enough merely to leave things behind, he adds what is perfect: And we have followed you. We have done what you commanded; what reward, then, will you give us? But Jesus said to them: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, at the resurrection, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, shall also sit on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He did not say: Who have left behind all things — for the philosopher Crates also did this, and many others despised riches; but: Who have followed me — which belongs properly to the Apostles and to believers.

℟ This is he who before God worked great deeds of power, and with his whole heart praised the Lord:

May he intercede for the sins of all peoples.

At the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit upon the throne of his majesty — when even the dead shall rise incorruptible from corruption — you also shall sit upon twelve thrones judging, and you shall condemn the twelve tribes of Israel: because while you believed, they refused to believe. And everyone who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for my name's sake shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life. This passage accords with that saying in which the Saviour speaks: "I have not come to send peace, but a sword. For I have come to separate a man from his father, and a daughter from her mother, and a daughter-in-law from her mother-in-law: and a man's enemies shall be those of his own household." Those, therefore, who for the faith of Christ and the preaching of the Gospel have despised all affections, and riches, and the pleasures of the world, shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life.

Reading 9

On the occasion of this passage, certain people introduce the thousand years after the Resurrection, saying that then the hundredfold of all the things we have left behind, along with eternal life, is to be rendered to us: not understanding that, if the reward were fitting in the other cases, in the matter of wives it would appear unseemly — that he who has left one wife for the Lord's sake should receive a hundred in the future. The meaning, therefore, is this: he who has left carnal things for the Saviour's sake shall receive spiritual ones: which, by comparison and by their own worth, will be as if a hundredfold number were compared with a small number.
