12 And I realize that there is nothing better than to rejoice, and to do well in this life.
13 For this is a gift from God: when each man eats and drinks, and sees the good results of his labor.

14 I have learned that all the works which God has made continue on, in perpetuity. We are not able to add anything, nor to take anything away, from those things which God has made in order that he may be feared.
15 What has been made, the same continues. What is in the future, has already existed. And God restores what has passed away.
16 I saw under the sun: instead of judgment, impiety, and instead of justice, iniquity.
17 And I said in my heart: "God will judge the just and the impious, and then the time for each matter shall be."

For Joachim is interpreted as the Preparation of the Lord, since from him was prepared the Lord's temple, namely the Virgin. Anna likewise is similarly interpreted as Grace, because Joachim and Anna received grace, so that through the coming of their prayers they brought forth such a fruit, having obtained the holy Virgin; for Joachim prayed on the mountain, and Anna in her garden.

O blessed pair, Joachim and Anna! All creation is indebted to you. For through you, creation offered to the Creator the most excellent of all gifts — a chaste mother, who alone was worthy of the Creator.

That Joseph drew his origin from the tribe of David, the most holy Evangelists Matthew and Luke have shown plainly. There is, however, this difference between them: Matthew traces Joseph's lineage from David through Solomon; Luke, however, through Nathan. But the holy Virgin's birth both of them passed over in silence. Therefore it is worth knowing that it was not the custom among the Hebrews, nor in Sacred Scripture, to enumerate the lineage of women. But this much was provided by law: that no tribe should take wives from another tribe. And accordingly Joseph, who was of the tribe of David and who cultivated justice (for this praise the divine Gospel bestows on him), could not have espoused the holy Virgin contrary to the prescription of the law, unless she had drawn her lineage from the same stock. And for this reason the Evangelist was satisfied to have shown from what origin Joseph drew his birth.

Therefore from the line of Nathan, the son of David, Levi begot Melchi and Panther. Panther, however, begot Barpanther (for so he was called). Barpanther in turn begot Joachim. Joachim finally begot the holy Mother of God. Again, from the line of Solomon, the son of David, Mathan begot Jacob by his wife. After Mathan's death, Melchi of the tribe of Nathan — son of Levi and brother of Panther — united to himself in marriage the very wife of Mathan, who was also the mother of Jacob, and begot Heli by her. Thus Jacob and Heli were uterine brothers: the former sprung from the tribe of Solomon, the latter from the tribe of Nathan.

Furthermore, Heli, who was of the tribe of Nathan, having begotten no children, departed this life; and for this reason Jacob, his brother, who had descended from the tribe of Solomon, took his wife and raised up seed for his brother and begot Joseph. Joseph, therefore, was by nature the son of Jacob, descended from Solomon; but according to the law he had as his father Heli, descended from Nathan. Such being the case, Joachim took that most excellent and praiseworthy woman Anna to wife. But just as that ancient Anna, when she suffered from the disease of barrenness, brought forth Samuel through prayer and promise, so also this woman in like manner received the Mother of God from God through supplication and promise, so that here too she should yield to none among the illustrious matrons. Thus "Grace" — for that is what the name Anna means — gives birth to "the Lady" — for that is what the name Mary signifies. For she was truly made the Lady of all created things, when she became the Mother of the Creator.
