Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now in the sun's new dawning ray,

Lowly of heart, our God we pray

That he from harm may keep us free

In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,

Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:

His favouring care our guardian be,

Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin

And folly find no place therein:

Scant need of food, excess denied,

Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,

And night in course shall follow on.

We, free from cares the world affords,

May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the holy Paraclete.

Amen.

23:1 The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord: * the whole world and all that dwells in it.

23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas, * and he has prepared it upon the rivers.

23:3 Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? * And who will stand in his holy place?

23:5 He will receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God, his Savior.

23:6 This is the generation that seeks him, * that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

23:7 Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, eternal gates. * And the King of Glory shall enter.

18:11 desirable beyond gold and many precious stones, * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.

18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord, * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.

18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate, * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.

18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please, * along with the meditation of my heart, in your sight, forever,

18:15b O Lord, my helper * and my redeemer.

The Thirty-First of August. The twenty-ninth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2027.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus, of the Order of Blessed Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Captives, Cardinal and Confessor; whose heavenly birthday is kept on the twenty-sixth of August.

Near Monte Senario, in Etruria, the heavenly birthday of Saint Buonagiunta, Confessor, one of the seven Founders of the Order of the Servants of Blessed Mary, Virgin; who, speaking to his brethren about the Passion of the Lord, gave up his spirit into the hands of the Lord. His feast and that of his companions is celebrated on the twelfth of February.

At Trier, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Paulinus, Bishop. In the time of the Arian persecution, he was banished by the Arian Emperor Constantius for the Catholic faith. Worn down by repeated changes of exile beyond Christian lands until his death, he finally died in Phrygia and received from the Lord the crown of his blessed suffering.

At Trasacco, on Lake Fucino, in the Marsi, likewise the heavenly birthday of the holy Martyrs Caesidius, Priest, and his companions; who were crowned with martyrdom in the persecution of Maximinus.

Likewise the holy Martyrs Robustianus and Marcus.

At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, the holy Theodotus, Rufina, and Ammia; the first two of whom were the parents of Saint Mamas the Martyr, whom Rufina bore in prison and Ammia raised.

At Auxerre, Saint Optatus, Bishop and Confessor.

In England, Saint Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne. Saint Cuthbert, whose commemoration is kept on March 20, was then a shepherd; when he saw Aidan’s soul being carried to heaven, he left his sheep and became a Monk.

Near Nusco, Saint Amatus, Bishop.

At Athens, Saint Aristides, most renowned for faith and wisdom, who presented to the Emperor Hadrian an outstanding volume on the Christian religion, containing the proofs of our doctrine; and, in the very presence of the Emperor himself, argued most brilliantly that Christ Jesus alone is God.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
